The fact that the N94 supports an A5 processor does not necessarily mean it will have an A5. It's quite possible that they contemplated multiple designs for the iPhone 5 including re-using the current design. Alternatively it may be possible that the iPhone 4"s" will have an A5 and cut costs elsewhere(plastic casing, less storage,). My guess is that the 5 will still have the design speculated by ThisismyNext.

I think this is the 4S. Apple realized that they can have a lower tiered phone, but they still wanted to give it a minor refresh. Even if it has an A5, it will probably be underclocked compared to that of the 5 and definitely the iPad2.

Which photo are you referring to? The one in the Mac Rumors story or the one in this thread? If it's the one from the Mac Rumors story then you need your eye's tested as it's a perfect match for my iPhone 4 I have sat next to me!!

if apple does make the cheaper 4S it wont have the A5.

Remember guys : Everytime we over think an Apple product refresh, everyone is let down by how little Apple actually changed.

Re-releasing the iPhone 4's awful industrial design to the current market is just asking to be savaged by critics, who will rightfully ding the phone for:

1. Not being competitive with current Android offerings (no LTE / 4G support, no large screen, no improved battery life)
2. Not justifying the wait and cost when it supports exactly 0 new features in iOS 5 compared to the iPhone 4
3. Not increasing durability when the glass build has been roundly criticized as being too fragile to use for building a piece of consumer electronics.

Sell on Apple stock if this is the best their geniuses have cooked up for the iPhone 4S.

Yup, "savaged by critics..." And in the mean time, they will continue to sell MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND REMAIN THE TOP SELLING PHONE AND PHONE VENDER IN THE WORLD.

Most plausible scenario:

8GB iPhone 4 that's compatible with all 4 carriers for $99 (to stave off the assault from Android). Looks just like the current one but a redesigned antenna.

16/32GB iPhone 5 that's also compatible with all 4 carriers (because it's the new hotness). New design for more lust.

I don't think Apple can pull of a 3GS again and just keep the same design for their high end model. Sure, it sold well, but it ends up causing confusion in the market place because people look for visual cues to tell what phone they have. Simply put, if you had to direct someone over the phone to tell the difference between the 3G and 3GS, you know there's not that much difference between them.

what the heck are you guys bitching about? The iPhone 4 introduced a new design, why the **** do you think the iPhone "5" will be redesigned?

bc many people "like me" dont care as much about the specs as how it looks, i dont want to get the same phone twice

I love a phone that shatters both the front and back when you drop it. Glass construction all the way.

Once the front is shattered, it doesn't really matter to me whether the back is also shattered. I'd get it repaired anyway, and the cost is probably not very much higher.

Really, I just want a bigger screen. This tiny screen is looking really dated now.

I was actually considering getting my 1st iPhone, but I wont be buying unless the screen get's bigger. :(

The screen won't be bigger. All the app developers have been testing iOS 5 with a certain display in mind. That's what keeps Apple above the android phone market in my opinion. You have games and apps that are played on devices with different screen sizes and developers have to keep that in mind with android devices. Thus imo not all apps are as good on one phone to the next. Being that Apple has been using the same screen size it is easier for developers to write apps and deliver better ones across the board.

I'd bet that no matter what lineup they decide to roll out, it will be worth the wait.

Apple wouldn't prepare for the first product launch without Jobs to be a ho-hum upgrade. Shareholders would panic.

But that's just me speculating.

I think that any "new" iPhone will have to sport the new A5 chip. Whatever new features Apple has in mind for the next few months will probably be dependent on faster processors. With the next iPad sporting an A6 does it make sense to keep so many consumers on a chip 2 generations behind?
I would imagine Apple would want everyone off the A4 ASAP so it can continue to move forward without having to drag the rear.

with this logic we'd still be playing snake on a black and white nokia display

Had anyone considered the fact that since Apple is likely combining iPhone releases now with the iPod event that the tapered design leaks based off those cases MIGHT just be for a new iPod? All we have to go on is a rear shell case render, that says NOTHING about the device that it would attach too other than for its shape. I don't see how people saw an alleged case design and just jumped to "ITS A NEW IPHONE!"

Cheaper iPhone 4 with an A5 processor?

arn

Sure, why not? What portion of the manufacturing cost comes from making the processor? The more parts the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 have in common, the easier it is to begin making more 5s and fewer 4S's or vice versa, depending on whichever proves to be more popular.

I'm just trying to rationalize this as being the iPhone 4S, because I intend to get the iPhone 5 and I don't want it to look like the iPhone 4.

If I've waited this long for a phone that looks identical to the iPhone 4, I will be less than pleased

it's crazy how this issue doesn't affect computers where we have screens of so many resolutions but everything seems to magically just resize itself for the resolution
