Near Future = Not gonna happen
4 plus years from now = Who knows?

How many years did it take before we got a smaller iPod option? 3?

How many years has it been since the original iPhone was released? 3?

So...next year then?:p

Why is it so hard to imagine someone would want a brand-new phone with top-of-the-line technology and somewhat dumbed-down abilities coming in cheaper and smaller? Why is the answer buy a 3GS? (And why wasn't the answer in 2004 to buy an earlier model iPod instead of the Mini?)

I personally know people who hate the size of the current smart phones...maybe that is an untapped market...an Apple pseudo-smart phone that's less than 100 dollars, and is about half the size in width.

It's not a stretch...

Because Apple usually isn't interested in making a POS product just so they can say, "Hey, it doesn't cost much".

Why would a phone that doesn't browse the web have to be a POS? Think of it as an addition to the iPod line that makes phone calls. It would be iPod nano quality at iPod shuffle prices (or even less) because of contract subsidies.

You can't beat a full sized previous version iPhone at the $99 price point. Who would buy a dumb phone over that?

Two reasons.

1. You don't want a data plan.
2. You just want a phone that makes phone calls. No apps, no email, no web.

Seems like a good companion to an iPad.

And I forgot where I read it, but smart phones are starting to take over. There won't be many dumb phones around much longer. It's not like it used to be where you had to have a $200+ data plan to have a smart phone. Hell, my iPhone costs me the same as my old dumb phone did a few years before the iPhone came out.

Smartphones are still less than 20% of the market (closer to 15% if I remember correctly.) There are almost a billion people with dumb phones. Maybe a few of them would like to combine their phone and their iPod nano.

And a data plan does cost more than just a voice plan for most people.

That time frame wasn't meant to start from any initial release date. I believe it represents the way things are at now.

You obviously don't understand what Apple is all about. Apple is about innovation and doing things that haven't been done before. Why would they go backwards and create a phone that does nothing more than what cell phones did 4 years ago. I guarantee you that Apple's stance on that is, "Those phones are out there. There's no need for us to make another one".

Can you actually see Steve Jobs on stage, "Oh there's just one more thing. Today we are releasing the iPhone Nano! It's pretty much just like the razor. You know, the top tech cell phone before the iPhone came out. We know there's people that don't want a data plan, so we've fixed that. There's no internet on the nano! That's right! It's just a phone. No internet, means no App Store! That's right! No App Store means you don't need a color display. That's right! We're bringing back the original grey scale display for the Nano! It's our answer to the candy bar cell phone with chicklet keys! We're very excited about the iPhone Nano, and we hope you will be too!"

Sorry, it doesn't make sense.

And again, you can't compare the iPhone with the iPod. All iPods were meant to do one thing (except for the iPod Touch), play music. You can still play music with a smaller iPod. They still do the exact same thing.

Wow. Maybe possibly consider that if Apple were to produce an iPhone nano, they would design it better than the imaginary product that you made up to serve your point.

I could see a touch screen device with your basic dumb phone functions on a two inch screen. Address book, calendar, Clock, Calculator, etc. And then the feature that no other dumb phone has -- iTunes integration. Music, podcasts, maybe even video and photos.

And again, you can't compare the iPhone with the iPod. All iPods were meant to do one thing (except for the iPod Touch), play music. You can still play music with a smaller iPod. They still do the exact same thing.

Huh? iPods have alway done more than play music. And their feature list has grown with every generation. Not sure what point you are trying to make here.

Right on BaldiMac!

God knows back in 2006 I wasn't watching episodes of The Office and Lost on my click-wheel iPod, nor was I playing games on it either....just listening to music. Never looking at photos...and I sure couldn't have listened to the radio in later versions of the device. Just listening to music from my iTunes library.

Why did Apple release a mini or nano iPod anyway? It was a cheaper alternative to the main version to get more people using it and hopefully retain them for years to come as iPod owners and iTunes buyers.

Why is it so hard to imagine a cheaper version of the iPhone which in some way might actually be better than an older 3Gs but without some key features like retina display or a big screen?

Of course this is all conjecture on both parts, but Jestered and others seem dead set against Apple creating different versions of their winning product when if you go back in history that is exactly what they have done for decades. We had a PowerBook...why a MacBook? We had an iMac, why make a Mini? the iPod example has been gone over...it's a path they ALWAYS follow and it will bring more people into the iTunes enviroment to make more money.

I guarantee a next-generation, cheaper, scaled-down iPhone would sell VERY well at under $100.
