What's holding back some potential iPhone customers is the pricey data plan that does NOT include a text messaging plan, not its price.

I would gladly pay $74.99 /month for a LIMITED data plan, 1,500 text messages and 450 anytime minutes. $69.99 a month w/o any SMS is fleecing the customer. When you add a $20 unlimited text messaging plan you're looking at $89.99 /month before fees and taxes. I can't afford that.

The unlimited data component costs so much more and uses gobs more bandwidth than text messaging. Come on!

The text messaging add-on is in fact RIDICULOUS, as you have pointed out. Every individual I've helped set up a new iPhone is agast as the cost of the add on, and the fact that its something separate to begin with. HUGE marketing mistake on their part. As it is they created a joint plan of minutes/data. Was it really that hard to roll in SMS and charge the same?

Then why isn't everybody buying Macs? The big buying factor for ipods is iTunes and the Appstore (Mac/PC) coupled with a good interface and hardware, even today there isn't 1 competitor that has something equally compelling to offer. Don't underestimate Mac compatibility, user trust the product more if it supports more operating systems.

I partly agree with you in the fact that that the interface of iPod and iTunes etc does help, but you can't really compare spending around £100 on an iPod nano to £700 on a Mac.

How could they make a cheaper version of the iPhone?

Simple:

1) No touch screen, just a small keypad/keyboard
2) Smaller screen
3) Maybe even flip
4) But still run the SAME OS and able to use the AppStore.

Interesting, except the bold is physically impossible. Unless multitouch OS can both be and not be. :D

The monthly plan can be reduced? Says who? You have confirmation from AT&T and every other carrier around the world that they're prepared to offer the same product in a smaller box, for less money? Do you have confirmation they won't?ALREADY? yes the overall monthly cost or the plan through tiered data plan and messaging plan. Confirmation? hence the name of this website macrumors

Sorry, but there is absolutely no chance it would cost LESS per month. Not a chance. Why not, offer no data plan or tiered data plans, just like they do with messaging.

Also, its better for you not to compare your child to the rest of "highschoolers". Maybe you don't notice them, but there are more "highschoolers" out there who have no chance whatsoever of affording even decent cell phone, let alone an iPhone Nano.
Not everyone can afford a BMW that doesn't mean that BMW doesn't sell a significant number of cars, and thank you for advising me what is best for me.

I am sure Apple is going to sit on the sidelines and be happy with their current market share.

It won't be long before iPhones, nanos and regular, are as common as the razr.

iphone nano

apple should just keep the same screen size on the iphone nano, but make it thin ipod touch thin. also they should just keep GPS and get rid of the 3g, and make it in different colors just like the ipod nano. thats what i would like to see.

The problem is that they can't make it that thin because there are too many components in it.

I'm pretty sure alot of people don't like the size of the current iPhone, but maybe an iPod Touch sized iPhone would do. The chromatic thing on the iPod Nanos looks great, but I don't even want to go near iPhone Nanos that are yellow. 3G should be kept for voice transmissions, small basic phones have 3G too.

Too expensive, for me anyways. I can get a decent PC or laptop for 800 bucks compared to over 1500 bucks.

Reducing the bezel would also help.

Because for $1900 I got a Dell XPS with hdmi, firewire, remote, bluray, 4gig or ram, 250gig hdd with fall safe, 4 year full warranty with accidental coverage, blue tooth, memory card reader, 15.4 1900x1440 screen HD audio out. Its very nice and mac, as much as i wanted one just didn't have the features, not even close.

Across the apple laptop offerings the features seem to be lacking of behind what thePC market is offering.

(New member here tho I've been on here for months and recently got a touch)

Anywayz: I would like a iPhone nano if the plan was cheaper. No way I'm paying the outragous price each month. Thats why I got a touch.

I don't think the iPhone Nano is real, my *sources* indicate that Apple will in fact be releasing the iPhone Shuffle.

http://suburbia.org.uk/blog/2008/12/23/124550.html

I can't wait to get one.

But seriously if they announced a iPhone Shuffle I would laugh so hard and I would probally get it if its cheap :D

iPhone Nano? could be good and cheaper if...

Skip adding Safari. There are plenty of apps that can serve similar functions. I'm sure games and apps will work just fine on a smaller screen!

I've playing with friend's iPhones and web browsing just isn't that "workable."

Okay, so if they did announce an iPhone nano, a cheaper MacBook, and a smaller iPod shuffle, I think it is possible. :)

iPhone Nano would have a smaller screen but same resolution (Just like what Apple did with the fatty nano and the iPod Classic) no 3G, maybe GPS the rest would be the same. thinner and possibly in colors.

Cheaper MacBook would just be cheaper. No netbook like everyone is thinking, just a unibody MacBook to replace the white one (which i have no clue why they still sold it)

iPod shuffle would be the oval shape that the current ipod nano is (kinda how the 2G shuffle shared the shape of the 2G nano) and 1GB and 2GB (no one would put 1000 songs on a shuffle) same clip and headphone data connector dock thingy

I am getting so sick and tired of NETBOOK this and NETBOOK that.

I've looked at some of the PC netbooks out there. I would never want to own one. Most of them have smaller screens than our 13" widescreen format. the keyboards are slightly smaller and the processors are crippled to the point that my iPhone is actually faster than them.

If you need to surf the internet and check email get an iPhone.
If you need to work on miniscule crap like Word/Excel and do the same old internet crap than get yourself the cheapest MacBook.

We do not need a Netbook in the MacBook family.

Here here to that! I can't stand those Netbook things, they're too small to be that usable as a laptop, but big enough to be less convenient than an iPhone or iPod Touch. Why anyone would need the internet on the go with a cramped keyboard and a machine that will be out of date in about a year is anyone's guess. If you want internet get an iPod Touch or an iPhone, if you want a laptop that's portable but actually usable you need something like the Air, at least you get a usable computer.

Sorry, but there is absolutely no chance it would cost LESS per month. Not a chance.

The premise of offering an iPhone nano is offering a device that does not have the 3G's mandatory data plan attached. Basic math says that the monthly plan will be lower without data than with.

What, exactly, do you base your presumption that there is "no chance" the monthly fees will be lower on? Do you "have confirmation from AT&T and every other carrier around the world"?

Basic business sense supports the premise of a cheaper iPhone and cheaper contract.

This post makes no sense. You complain about the cramped keyboard, and then suggest that someone buy an iPod touch instead? The keyboard on a netbook is a lot more usable than the keyboard on the iPod touch. Maybe a netbook doesn't suit your lifestyle, but for students they're excellent machines for taking notes and giving presentations - an iPod touch doesn't cut it for that.

As for the MBA - yes, it's a great machine. It also costs four times as much as some Netbooks. They are not at all the same thing. For many, many people who only need a machine for light work like internet browsing, email, and word processing, a netbook is a fantastic machine with unrivalled portability.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about if you think that an iPod touch is a viable alternative to a netbook...

There's a pretty obvious reason to get a netbook over an iPhone or an Air...money. You're talking about $300-$800US for a netbook vs. $200 for an iPhone PLUS $700+/year even added to a Family Plan, or $1800+ for an Air.

yeah i am sick of all this netbook stuff. I mean I just want portability, so a smaller form factor and lighter weight of a netbook which is less than 10'' does nothing for me compared to Apple's offerings. I mean a 13'' laptop is definitely more portable cos you know its like you know thinner! And i'm willing to pay twice the price of a netbook for a macbook air cos i like leaving my processor idle rather than using 100% of 1.6ghz. Seriously who would want such crap as a netbook, i don't want three usb ports instead of one, i want portability in the form of thinness! :p

I do not get the Netbook thing either. They are meant to be low cost, small laptops that can do simple tasks

They were suppose to be in the $100-200 yet they are coming out with $300+ netbooks in droves!

Now they are starting to come out with 12" netbooks. WTH 12" I thought they were suppose to be small!

When you piece things together the MBA is the netbook. It is more expensive then it should be for a computer meant to do simple tasks and it's bigger then it should be.

MSI Wind (1.6GHz with 120/160gb hdd) + MSIWindosx86 = Netbook

There. The netbook answer. :D
I'm really thinking of getting that.

How things look for the UK?

If a less pricey macbook was to come out in the US would the range be updated at the same time in the UK?
