There was nothing like the iPod when it was released. The closest would have been a Creative Nomad, which barely existed in the same world as the iPod.
One could say that there's nothing like a possible Apple voicephone on the market today, as well. The iPod did the same things as previously existing music players did, it just did those things in a better way (compared to all of them), with better storage (compared to the flash-based players) or better form factor (compared to the giant Nomad.) (And we can't forget iTunes being a large part of it too.) If Apple has any interest in getting it "right" I suspect they could produce a voicephone that compares to today's phones just like the iPod compared to other music players in 2001.
But yeah, it's just all idle speculation unless Tim Cook was feeding us BS the other day.
