Why are these navigation apps such a huge topic? Do you people not know where you're going?

Many people do not know where they are going. This surprises you? I'm always surprised when I meet someone who does.
I like Waze so far - though it has asked me to make a few illegal/impossible turns (the one time it asked me to make a left turn, but there was a concrete barrier between the two directions; the other time it asked me to make a right where it was prohibitted)
You've never travelled to a new place? One could print paper directions I suppose - but unless you have a passenger to read them off for you, that's not really convenient.
I have a GPS auto device for the car. I rarely use it. I drove cross country twice without maps. It ain't difficult.

A cyber thanks to those who recommended Waze. It truly is remarkable how it's free. I'll start using it as my main GPS application from now on.
