Great story! Let me ask though, why didn't you just use debit? I too would feel nervous with $700 on me in the form of cash. lol. Also, why did you buy one? I thought MR supplied you with one, unless they're paying you back as long as you blog about it.
I don't have a debit card, as I don't have a checking account.
My system works for how I usually purchase things. It's not every day I drop almost $800 in one sitting. :)

And MR supplied me with one by way of sending me money to go buy it. Buying the phone in the store is part of the experience, right? :D

Going back on topic, I waited online for 4 hours just so I could PLAY with an iPhone. I'm in no position to get one right now, as I've mentioned earlier. It's awesome. I can't wait to get one, but I may get a rev b. since I'd like a MacBook Pro first.

Am I the only person interested in what the back of the iPhone looks like?

Also, I haven't seen any discussions of the iPhone's battery... if it's easily replaceable (like the vast majority of cell phones) or built-in and hard/expensive to replace (like iPods).

I don't like the back of the iPhone. Although it would get smudged, i think the mirror finish of the iPod Video would look better on it.

Hi Katie

Great thread, it's been awesome following all the hysteria from over here in the UK, I've gotta wait until later on in the year for my iPhone - at least i've got my Wii to console(?) myself for the time being. Keep writing, I'll keep reading.:)

Awesome. Question that's sorta OT: Why do you have two MacBook Pros? If that was me, though I'd enjoy them both, that'd be a bit much and I'd sell one. Prolly the 17".

I have a question that's very much on topic. People have only posted about how they've SWITCHED To ATT. What about people that want to either take a line they already have on a family plan and make it an individual line, or if someone wants to start their own plan without any existing plan? I'm on ATT already. I hope that makes sense.

Why do I have two MBPs? Because I am an Apple gearhead!! LOL! One is the 15" CD (my first intel-based Mac) and the other is the 17" C2D. The 15" goes out and about with me most of the time, while right now the 17" is hooked up to a 23" ACD and serves as my "everyday" Mac. The Mac Pro is my "digital darkroom" and I try to reserve that for all of my photographic projects.

In answer to your second question, on the screen where you're setting up activation there is a place to indicate that you are a current AT&T customer and that you want to either switch your existing account to an iPhone or to add an iPhone without changing your existing account (porting numbers). Since I was switching from Sprint I clicked the appropriate radio button and moved on....

There, fixed that for you :p

Dear person: You have chilled an otherwise cool event (which, though it sounds redundant, isn't).

Ideally mall security would keep buyers safe for a while as they toted their bags to the car. I'm sure mall security was heightened across the nation. At least it was at Houston malls.

Americans seem to have an aversion/anxiety when it comes to cash. From all the people I have met in my live, I have never heard a story about a personal encounter of mugging (in Europe at least, one of my friends was once mugged in Peru). I know one story about a pick-pocket and one about a break-in into a car.

Really, your chances of being mugged on any given day are probably lower than winning the lottery.

gosh how do you get so lucky? i really want one but im trapped in a deal with verizon. guess ill get the second version. you saw me there by the way (afro kid from PVA). just getting to hold one and play with it was quite an experience. hope you enjoy it!

Cullen!!

You were in line but didn't buy one? Were you just there with your friend who was buying one?

iFixit has a photostream (lack of a better word) up at http://stream.ifixit.com. The battery is soldered onto the logic board. I'd think if a new battery is needed they'd give you a brand new iPhone, and presumeably they'd transfer all your data to the new one. That's just a guess though.

That's ridiculous that Apple did that though not surprising. What do you do when your battery dies and charging is not an immediate option? I keep a spare battery for my cellphone because I need it sometimes.

Oh well I won't be in the iPhone market for a long time anyways, as I only talk on my current phone and have never used any other feature except its alarm clock. It just does not make much sense to have a non-swappable battery, since the average cell phone probably gets much more use than the average iPod causing a quicker decrease in a batteries charge capacity.

One thing I do wonder though if you have an annoying caller that keeps calling you, can you write an Applescript to automatically answer and hang up the call, maybe give the caller a fax machine sound?

Enjoy the iPhone I'm sure it will be fun to use:)

If you are working at a toy store, there are probably better ways to use your money than on a $500 cellphone.

Even if they didnt fix up your erroneous statement. This is Macrumors iPhone boards not iFinancial. Nobody asked for your advice on how to spend their money.

I think the key point that he missed is that the iPhone was payed in full by MacRumors.com

Honey have you ever heard of a debt card. Cash is so 1990's. You can get a debt card with a savings account.

The back of the phone is plastic.

No, the back is anodized aluminum, same as all the aluminum Macs. (Not "brushed" in other words--that's an affect Apple has never used.) And like my PowerBook, is very scratch-resistant. Only the antenna portion at the bottom (black) is plastic.

Is it just me...

.. or does clicking "read more" on the blog article not give you any additional story?

i agree this thing is very scratch resistant. However, i still bought an incase case for the iphone.. best purchase ive made so far :)

Usb 1.1

Just out of curiosity, does the iPhone work with USB 1.1 should I decide to get it before my MBP? That's what my iBook G3/600 MHz sports.

USB 2.0 is officially required for the iPhone. I got the iPhone to work with Windows over USB 1.1 but not Mac (iMac 800Mhz OSX). And yes, I'm a little irked about it.
