So if I am selling my 3g to a family member with ATT but she does not want to pay for the data. Can she just place here sim into an activated 3g, and put a data block onto her phone?

yes. I have not paid for data on my 3g since december. No problems from ATT. My bill is only $45, it used to be $80.

This IS POSSIBLE. I have done it and I did it for months.

1. Before you put the SIM in the iPhone, call up AT&T and have them put a data block on your account (I believe they call it a WAP block).
2. Put SIM in phone.
3. Use phone.

Seriously, that's it. IF AT&T puts the data plan on your account without your permission (which they should not), you should be eligible to cancel without an ETF, as they would be violating your contract.

Nope, if you use an AT&T sim you dont need a turbo sim adapter or even to jailbreak unlock if you dont want to.
Go here on your iphone http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/
and install the fake apn to disable all data thru edge/3G.
You'll be able to use everything else on wifi, sync thru itunes, download apps thru the appstore etc...
No visual voicemail but you will get the standard voicemail where you get the indicator and punch in your pin to listen to your messages.
If you need any more help let me know.

Applejuiced, it sounds like that is basically what your friend has done? Do you know if he has a turbo sim to unlock the device, or was it fine on At&t without it?

Thanks again, all.

I currently have a family plan with att with no iphones. I am eligible for an upgrade to an iphone. If I upgrade, can I then call them and ask them to cancel and block the data?

RE:Iphone 3G 3.0 no data

I just bought the 3G S and want to give my 3G to my wife but I don't
want a data plan for her line.

Questions:

1. Can I still use txt and mms messaging?

2. Will AT&T know I am using an Iphone?

Right now she is using a Nokia phone, will it show
she changed phones if I use her sim in the 3G?

Thanks

Wrong.
They said if they catch people using other data plans with the iphone and not the correct iphone data they will contact them to change it to the appropriate plan.
Like if people using a 2G $20 iphone data plan on the iphone 3G instead of the $30 plan etc....
Its weird how I see your user handle associated alot with alot of wrong or misinformed posts.

when i was in the store upgrading my husbands from the 2g to 3g acct i asked this question - they had someone rack up a $13k data charge using the iphone without the right data plan -

i will pass...and pay the $30

$13,000 for using the wrong data plan? I call bs on that.
If someone blocks data and only uses the Internet on wifi wouldn't have to deal with any of that.

Just an update for others' benefit:

I jailbroke and activated a 3g 16gb iphone running 3.0 with the latest version of red snow. I didn't have the sim in it b/c it was for my gf and she was still using her old phone. When I put her SIM in it I did not get any errror message but also no signal. I think this was because I didn't have the sim in there during the jailbreak process -- I have read suggestions to restore to 3.0 and repeat the jailbreak process, but before I tried that I took the sim out, ran ultrasnow to unlock it and, and then put the sim back in the phone -- success! So unlocking the phone is probably not normally necessary to use an At&T sim, but in my case it made life easier since I didn't have to re-jailbreak.

Also, the APN changer works great: the phone doesn't access data when I'm not on wifi.

So, for less than the cost of a new ipod touch I've got a great condition 3g iphone upated to 3.0 with normal itunes and apps store access plus the cydia installer, the phone can make calls, access data via wi-fi, and for now I can hold off on deciding whether a data plan is worth committing to $700+ over 2 years. Thanks again for the help!

great! i also noticed that after unlocking, i can put in an att or tmobile sim, and make calls, but not have data, and just use wifi - this was on my 2G - I didnt change the APN, it just wont give data because there is no data plan on the sim -

so if i have a 3g that's been activated and used data with AT&T for a while now, do i have any option to drop the data?

I gave my 1st Gen iPhone to my daughter, but when she puts her sim card in from her AT&T Treo (with data blocked) it wants to activate through iTunes before I can do anything with it. How do I get around that?

Two options:
1. Plug it in to your computer that you've previously synced it to and it should activate, just don't restore the backup.
2. Use PwnageTool and pwn the phone with a firmware that is hacktivated.

I don't get why someone would have an iPhone and not need data(unless you're somewhere with free wifi everywhere). I mean yeah I guess you can use some apps and games still, but I feel the whole point of using a phone like this is for the connectivity.

I bought my first iPhone used and got away with a medianet plan that I had since like 2004 or 2005. Didn't matter because it was the same $20. HOWEVER, it mattered when I picked up an iPhone 3G. I got away with the plan for like three or four months. They kept texting me and then they eventually put me on the $30 plan. Without disclosing, I was able to "spoof" my IMEI and changed my plan back to the older $20 iPhone plan for another few months. Then I got the annoying test messages again, and once again was put on the $30 plan. I'm sure the amount of data I was using is what gave me off.

However. I have seen accounts of AT&T customers who did what I did(go from 2G, then to 3G) and never got caught with the $20 plan until they tried to get a 3GS; as well as people who never had any sort of data plan, bought a used iphone then racked up a $2000 bill. My own sister switched from an iPhone 3G to a BlackBerry bold w/o going through AT&T and got charged an extra $400 on data charges.

So if you plan on using edge/3g there's a very good possibility AT&T will make you pay. If not, I'm sure you'll get away with it if you follow some of the suggestions people here made.

how do you do the APN changer? I'm thinking of doing the same thing you did

quesiton: about use iphone 3gs without data plan

can i use ATT sim card to unlock it or i have to use other carrier's sim to
unlock it ? i will still use ATT after unlock, just want to make sure the data is block!

2g iphone with no data plan?

I currently have a 2g iphone and i popped my sim out of a blackjack2 and into the iphone. there was never a data plan on the blackjack2. The 2g is unlocked jail broken and data usage is blocked in my account. will they bill me for a data plan?

If you're using an iPhone with no data plan at all:
You're golden. Sure, they'd prefer it if you would fork over the extra cash, but their subsidy runs through the voice plan, and that goes for all phones. They require you to sign up for a data plan at the time you purchase the iPhone, but after that, just give them a call and cancel it. Many people have done this, and it works just fine. Be sure to request a WIX block as well, and change your iPhone's APN (google it) so data transmission will be blocked on both ends. You don't want to get a $5,000 phone bill next month because your phone used data without your permission.

Hope this helps

I can confirm this procedure works. No data plan on a 3g for 2 years (cancelled after the first month). No text messages asking for one either.

Just upgraded to an iP4, but with the cheaper data option now available, I'm not sure if I'll do this again.
