So if I am selling my 3g to a family member with ATT but she does not want to pay for the data. Can she just place here sim into an activated 3g, and put a data block onto her phone?
Applejuiced, it sounds like that is basically what your friend has done? Do you know if he has a turbo sim to unlock the device, or was it fine on At&t without it?
Thanks again, all.

Nope, if you use an AT&T sim you dont need a turbo sim adapter or even to jailbreak unlock if you dont want to.
Go here on your iphone http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/
and install the fake apn to disable all data thru edge/3G.
You'll be able to use everything else on wifi, sync thru itunes, download apps thru the appstore etc...
No visual voicemail but you will get the standard voicemail where you get the indicator and punch in your pin to listen to your messages.
If you need any more help let me know.
strange. when I go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ on the iphone it takes me to the page that says "You are seeing this page if you are not accessing the website from your iPhone." ?
Wrong.
They said if they catch people using other data plans with the iphone and not the correct iphone data they will contact them to change it to the appropriate plan.
Like if people using a 2G $20 iphone data plan on the iphone 3G instead of the $30 plan etc....
Its weird how I see your user handle associated alot with alot of wrong or misinformed posts.
when i was in the store upgrading my husbands from the 2g to 3g acct i asked this question - they had someone rack up a $13k data charge using the iphone without the right data plan -
i will pass...and pay the $30
Just an update for others' benefit:
I jailbroke and activated a 3g 16gb iphone running 3.0 with the latest version of red snow. I didn't have the sim in it b/c it was for my gf and she was still using her old phone. When I put her SIM in it I did not get any errror message but also no signal. I think this was because I didn't have the sim in there during the jailbreak process -- I have read suggestions to restore to 3.0 and repeat the jailbreak process, but before I tried that I took the sim out, ran ultrasnow to unlock it and, and then put the sim back in the phone -- success! So unlocking the phone is probably not normally necessary to use an At&T sim, but in my case it made life easier since I didn't have to re-jailbreak.
Also, the APN changer works great: the phone doesn't access data when I'm not on wifi.
So, for less than the cost of a new ipod touch I've got a great condition 3g iphone upated to 3.0 with normal itunes and apps store access plus the cydia installer, the phone can make calls, access data via wi-fi, and for now I can hold off on deciding whether a data plan is worth committing to $700+ over 2 years. Thanks again for the help!
I gave my 1st Gen iPhone to my daughter, but when she puts her sim card in from her AT&T Treo (with data blocked) it wants to activate through iTunes before I can do anything with it. How do I get around that?

If you're using an iPhone with no data plan at all:
You're golden. Sure, they'd prefer it if you would fork over the extra cash, but their subsidy runs through the voice plan, and that goes for all phones. They require you to sign up for a data plan at the time you purchase the iPhone, but after that, just give them a call and cancel it. Many people have done this, and it works just fine. Be sure to request a WIX block as well, and change your iPhone's APN (google it) so data transmission will be blocked on both ends. You don't want to get a $5,000 phone bill next month because your phone used data without your permission.
Hope this helps
