Apple just released a ton of new software days ago, and 8-core pro Macs shortly before that. Other Macs are presumably coming--likely next month with Intel's Santa Rosa.

Meanwhile, OS X has been delayed 4 months, with progress and new builds continuing to be released nonetheless.

We don't know what Macs (or secret OS X features) may be coming along, but it sure doesn't sound like any "forgetting" to me. Rather, it sounds as though the iPhone is an OS X product (known fact) and thus used some of the same talent that could have kept Leopard moving more quickly.

A shame, but hardly any indication of Apple neglecting the Mac. That's a popular cry with little evidence, and has been for years. Some things are late, some are early (like the Intel transition--a HUGE Mac-centric project) and some are on time. Late makes headlines, but it doesn't mean the sky is falling.

As for finances, Apple seems to be doing quite well, and their long-term plans look even better. Mac sales are rising EVEN during the temporary spike of PC sales related to Vista's release: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/04/18/apples_mac_sales_rock_steady_despite_vista.html

Remember the switch to Intel got done early, not because of Apple but because Intel stepped up their speed & Apple needed to to keep up or lose face. But then they have choosen to lose face in the Mac OS release delay.

Also the Mac Pro is not as good as the pci-express PPC G5 Mac. The PPC G5 Mac has 32 lanes, while the Mac Pro only has 26 lanes. Presently I have 1 video card at 16 lanes, 1 at 8 lanes. This only leaves 2 lanes left. I need to add a SCSI card, but they require 4 lanes. That means that since Apple used an Intel mother board for the Mac Pro, there was a lose of needed pci-express lanes. It seems that my choice will have to be to slow down my ATI duel slot card to 8x to be able to get the 4x SCSI card. Better would be if I could go: 16, 4, 4, & 4. If Apple had actually made the board with 32 or more lanes I could have fone with a: 16x, 8x, 4x & 4x. Much better.

The above things will probably not happen because they have left much of the Mac motherboards to Intel to design. I came to Apple back in 1984 to stay away from Intel only to have an Intel Mac now. That was only because I ned to run Windows so much of the time. Other than running WindowsI like my older PPC Mac better. I could run 4 displays with it just like I do now. With my current setup I could run 3 30" displays, ubt I'm waiting for something new.

Does Apple build anything any more? or is it all built by third party manufacturers in China? My Mac Pro said Assembled in the US of Foreign & Doestic parts. But my PowerBooks & iPods you could trace from China to the US.

I'm waiting for a Intel Mac Pro with 32 or more lanes. I'm waitng for Applle to have an Intel MacBook Pro with a hard drive that can be changed as easy as in the Intel MacBooks. My 15" Ti PowerBook has a 160 GB hard drive in it. My 17" AL PowerBook still has it original 80 GB drive in it. I have purchased my last substandard Mac portable. I need the large screen of the 17", but would rather play with the easily upgradable Ti PowerBook.

I will not hold my breath for Apple to make these needed chages as I don't really expect the the new Apple Trinket Company is taking computers as seriouly as most out there seems to think they are doing.

Apple also assured us that Leopard is on time 3 weeks before they announced it will be delayed until October. I don't trust Apple on this one.

Apple has some partnerships involved in the iPhone (AT&T, Yahoo, Google, etc.) so meeting its deadline is probably a higher priority for them than meeting Leopard's deadline--as much as that sucks. Also, there has been a lot of public interest in the iPhone and Apple stands to get hit with a lot of bad publicity should its release date slip. I have a feeling Apple means what they're saying on this one.

You complain about little evidence, yet what evidence do you produce to prove that Apple still cares about the Mac?
"Other Macs are presumably coming--likely next month with Intel's Santa Rosa." Unlikely next month given Apple's current rate of development. Rumoring about phantom products doesn't prove Apple still cares about Macs.

Recent evidence on the LACK of Mac focus includes:
- Removing "computer" from the name of the company.
- Zero mention of Mac anything at Mac world keynote. Especially ironic given the name of the conference.
- Leopard delayed because a phone is a higher priority.
- Mini woefully behind and in need of an update to at least C2D. Rest of the line starting to age and prices for hard drives and memory especially onerous. Apple charging $250-300 to upgrade to a 160gig drive when a new 160 gig drive in quantity of one can be had for $100.

Do I dare jinx the community?

I don't think there would be anything short of fires, raids, and mass shallow graves in the event that the iPhone is delayed as well. Apple is going to do everything in its power to keep this gadget on time.
People had doubts about Leopard being late, and it came true, but i guess this is more about Apple setting the story straight and not letting people second guess them.
Maybe which is why commercials about iPhone have been shown, press releases...released, and why no one had heard a peep from the Leopard department. :confused:

You quoted my evidence in your own post :) I'll add the non-stop Mac ads to the list :)

As for your evidence that Apple doesn't care... it's mainly evidence that Apple does many things in ADDITION to computers. That's no surprise, and has been true for many years. Those additional products sell a lot of Macs, as it happens, and strengthen the platform.

Nobody truly believes that Apple no longer cares about computers. It makes a nice soundbite to repeat though :p

I also like how each person notes THEIR particular unsatisfied desire and turns that into some general problem. Meanwhile ignoring all the other things Apple has done recently--like the 8-core tower or the new pro software--that OTHER people care about. Fear not: the Mac Mini will be updated, and the timing for that release will not be random, nor caused by "forgetting" Macs, nor caused by not caring or other childish motives. It will be a business decision with actual adult reasons--be they marketing reasons, a wait for Intel's Santa Rosa, or reasons we will never hear. Maybe Apple will release a Mini later this month that's far better than the Mini they could have released a month ago. The suspense is hard, but something new IS coming, for all Mac product lines.

The wait for a Mini displeases you. The number of PCI channels in a Mac Pro displeases someone else. The looooong wait for a subnotebook displeases me. That doesn't lead me to the conclusion that Apple "doesn't care" about computers.

I dont think they can afford to delay the iPhone with the competition most likely furiously building copycats and competitive phones. What does Leopard have as competition....vista? HAH.

I can't wait until june, might have to pick up one for me and one for my wife :)

Steve Jobs last October:

"Looking forward, 2007 is likely to be one of the most exciting new product years in Apple's history"

...He meant 2008.

I really don't see why everyone's panties are getting in a bunch from Apple dropping "computer" from the name.

Everyones complaining about Apple not refreshing its hardware and OSX being delayed 120 days?

Umm...Apple has had hardware upgrade droughts before, and trust me, they will happen again. And as far as an OS (or any software for that matter) being delayed, there are companies that exclusively focus on software and that is commonplace. It is nonsense to think that a name change and an OS/Hardware drought are signifying the end of the Mac's relevance to Apple.

Like it or not, iPhone is the most publicized and potentially biggest product launch for Apple since the original Macintosh. Their credibility in the mainstream is riding on this. It is not riding on Leopard, Leopard will be a blip on the media radar screen if picked up at all.

Apple made the absolute right choice for their future. It includes the Mac, in fact I would venture to say centers on the Mac, but right now, iPhone is the most important thing they need to deal with, and will determine their immediate future.

Why would it be delayed. Apple is no longer a compter company, but a small tinket company with its iPod & upcoming iPhone. You noticed that resourses wre not taken from the iPhone to bring out Mac OS 10.5 on time. But rather the reverse was true. Resourses wre taken from the Mac OS development to be used on a limited market gadget.............

You are demonstrating a general lack of knowledge of new product development and marketing. If you want to understand the process, rather just making blanket statements, there is a wealth of great information out there. It is much more involved than you seem to think.

lol - just like how they were on track for leopard, and denied that they were behind...oops...6 months delay, oh shucks folks...you know how it goes. :D

- by the way, I dont give a rats *** about their phone. ;)

was going to buy a computer from them...but I guess thats on hold...indefinately now, as I might just by something else instead with the money. But Im just one customer, I wont affect apple...unless there are a lot more people like me. lolo

As long as that "something else" runs a better OS than Mac OS X Tiger, you have yourself a good plan :)

We have barely began the second quarter, right? Apple has not given a 2008 delivery to anything I have heard about. So, what is your point (if there actually is one)? Are you trolling, or still throwing a temper tantrum over Leopard?

There have been some dreadful posts about the Leopard reschedule, but yours has to be in the top five worst. Perhaps it is because it is so bloody lame. Come on, man. Yours is just a pitiful recital of most. It:

1) Expresses nothing new
2) Is absolutely stupid (anyone smart enough to actually buy a Mac, would not turn on the company which still makes the best OS available)
3) Simply regurgitates the "you just lost me" yawner (like anyone believes it)

Come on, Bill. I realize you have been looking pretty damn silly over the past few years (I know Balmer jumping around on his 'hobby horse' did not help). And I know it sucks when the Justice Department hold you accountable to the same rules as anyone else. But, bashing Mr Jobs and Apple is not going to work anymore. Make good products, demonstrate some originality and ingenuity, and quit trying to screw people all the time. You may be able to keep the ship afloat, if you do these things.

And for all you paid Apple-Bashers, I would make sure you always cash those checks pronto!

LOL, do you really think you will be able to buy one or two of these off the shelf in June?
It will be months before you buy one off the shelf...:D

With a $600 price tag I am sure you will be able to get them, might not be easy but I bet they will have a decent production.:)

Apple also assured us that Leopard is on time 3 weeks before they announced it will be delayed until October. I don't trust Apple on this one.
An announcement is only true until it's over. That's true of any company or any press release. All's fair in love and PR.

Something is on time until it's not. Profound, I know, but true. Take plane delays--the plane was always going to be late from a certain point onward, and they're aware of that possibility, but they won't admit it until it crosses a threshold where it is no longer possible to be on time. That's why you might only get the status update an hour ahead of time, even though the storm that caused it was seven hours ago, or why Apple won't announce a delay until it's inevitable.

You have to play the media right. Sometimes, you want a rolling announcement (slow leaks to build momentum), but sometimes you have to control the message, deny rumors, and turn corners on your own call. The Leopard delay is the latter. A slow leak would have looked like Apple was less in control.
Now we can watch for rumors about the exact day of release, and argue about whether "late June" means the last Tuesday of June (the 26th), the last weekday of June (the 29th), or the last day of June (the 30th).
No, it'll be released by June 18th (because that's the last day of June in my opinion and anything after that is late, calendars be damned!).
Remember the switch to Intel got done early, not because of Apple but because Intel stepped up their speed & Apple needed to to keep up or lose face.
Well, considering that the Intel switch wasn't dependent on Intel at all, that doesn't make much sense. Apple waited for the Core architecture before starting the switch, and they finished it a year early. Apple didn't need to keep up with anything. They made a commitment to switch everything over within two years and did it in just one. If Intel hadn't released a single new processor since the original Core Duo, Apple still would have finished ahead of projections.
Nobody truly believes that Apple no longer cares about computers. It makes a nice soundbite to repeat though :p
Yep, but not as good as "Apple doesn't care about black people." Now sit back and watch that one fester in the "blogosphere."
I also like how each person notes THEIR particular unsatisfied desire and turns that into some general problem.
Apple will go out of business if they don't start selling furniture. Are they stupid? Obviously millions of people would buy Apple-designed furniture and they're shooting themselves in the foot and if there's no furniture by October I will never buy anything Apple again! Oh, and they should sell real apples, too. Otherwise it's false advertising and I'm going to get my lawyer panties all in a bunch.

OK, everybody is complaining here, so I will start too :) right now, I don't care so much about Leopard (hey, Tiger is the best system out there! I am quite happy with it), what bugs me more is no intel version of MS Office (pages are terrible in opening Word, OpenOffice/NeoOffice are painfully slow, not talking about PPC Word).

But I am quite surprised how iPhone is ... well, not so great. Yes, it has a great GUI, the best in the world maybe. But it costs 500$. And there is no free market for application, just "apple-controlled". That means crippled.

And, I live in EU and it will cost lot more here, especially now, when €=$0.7, but apple has 1€=1$. And it will be delayed more 6 months here (they say 2008!). And I expect application installation to be even more crippled than in US.

I am afraid (but it's only my opinion) that iPhone will be the same succes for Apple that N-Gage was for NOKIA. Great phone&computer merge, but not so succesful in market.

Preview of OSX. Review of iPhone.

New hardware.

It had better have some cool new hardware. Weren't the first 30 years "only the beginning"??

Strange, but this year (with the exception of a phone) has seemed really dry in terms of Apple stuff.

Yeah, it's been 3.5 months, not much time left in 2007, and we've seen no sign of any products being released this year except:

* iPhone (with additional models like 3G planned)
* Leopard (and new iLife?)
* 8-core Macs
* Final Cut Server
* Final Cut Pro 6
* Soundtrack Pro 2
* DVD Studio Pro 4
* Motion 3
* Shuffles in colors
* DRM-free iTunes (and iTunes 7.1 adding misc. features like Complete My Album)
* 802.11n Airport Extreme
* Apple TV
* ProRes 422

I hope Apple can manage to squeeze more new products into the remaining 8.5 months of the year ;)

And:
  • ProRes 422
  • IO-HD box
  • Lightweight OS X (chucking out all the extras to make the fat girl fly is a major upfront investment that leaves the door wide open for new devices running OS X--iPods, subnotebooks, tablets, other AppleTV models, or anything else Apple might decide to pursue)

Whatever

I see the iPhone as the Return of the Newton.

A small hand-held device which does all kinds of things you didn't even know you "needed" to be able to do, which costs so much (in terms of price plus the service plan) that the vast majority of people won't even spend any time considering buying one.

Eat up martha.

Disagree

The iPhone may look cute & fill a small niche market, but is being late on the release of OS 10.5 late & looking like MS really worth the price. Because Apple is now a trinket company they seem not to be concerned with the loss of sales, loss of image & loss of keekping the Mac Computer User satisfied.

I know only one person that has AT&T cell phone service & he doesnot have the money to purchase an iPhone. Those, like me, that have other service have no plans to purchase such a seemingly high priced cell phone gadget or trinket. My son had his cell phone & PDA tied together, but had to replace it because the cell phone no longer operated. When he purchased new he went with a Palm for his PDA needs & a separate cell phone for his phone needs. He said that he would never again get a combined device. Apple research seems to indicate that my son is in the minority group. I for one never went the route of a combined unit. I have a Palm PDA, an iPod for music & a Motorola cell phone for my phone needs. Why would I want to combine them? Cell phones needs to be replaced too often in my opinion to have large scale devices in the same package.

Wow, As a Mac user for 19 years (bought a Plus in 1988) I could not disagree with your statements more.
