I really don't understand why people insist on comparing the iphone to android. Android is not a phone, it's an OS that many phones run on. If you're considering an android phone then you need to compare the iphone to one particular phone. Every phone with android installed on it is not the same, so to just say iphone compared to android makes no sense. Figure out what phone you're trying to compare to and go from there. You wouldn't ask someone which is better, Honda Accord or Toyota? Because that question wouldn't make sense. It's the same concept in this case.

Yeah, you're right, to be more specific, which OS do you like better?

Gee, ive never seen this question asked in here before :p

LOL, yeah :D

Plus I like that iOS gives me a choice of which search engine to use; Android forces the user to use Google, of course. Who if they were Microsoft would be sued for violating monopolization laws...

This isn't true, you can use a variety of different search engines. In fact a lot of Verizon Android phones were coming pre-installed with Bing for a while. You don't want to argue choices in favor of iPhone dude, Android is the OS that's known for giving them and iOS for not giving them. On Android if you don't like the text messaging app or dialer your can just download a new one.

Android copied iOS and slapped some widgets and pretty moving backgrounds and called it a day.

if Android copied iOS, then Apple copied Palm. And Android is actually closer to Unix than iOS. I get tired of hearing this argument. In the tech world, devices and operating systems are going to have a lot of similarities as technology progresses. Besides, I think the whole "Android copied iOS" argument was killed when the new iOS notification system came out. Who cares, both are great products and each has its ups and downs. If you want simpler and sleeker look, a more stable OS, and a better build quality go with iPhone. If you want more customization without jailbreak or root, and more options in phone design, go with Android.

Personal Experiences

I'm with AT&T in the SF area. Verizon has true (LTE) 4g here, but AT&T has better 3g and HSPA, so I'm 'planning' to stick with Ma Bell. We have four phones either with upgrades avail. or soon will be.

I'm underwhelmed with the 4S specs (I've had the 3 & the 4), and expect the 5 in 6-9 months. (With how long before it becomes reliable?) I've chosen this opportunity to try Android. I use the phone primarily as a phone; the other goodies are icing on the cake. BUT, I love the newest, fastest and greatest.

I got the Sammy G SII, Skyrocket with LTE and a 4.5" screen operating on Android 2.3.5. It took me the better part of two days to become marginally knowledgeable with the system and the phone. My wall is full of holes where I threw the phone in frustration. You will have to spend a lot of time getting things that come on the iPhone like a decent keyboard. With only three days of 'normal' usage, I end the day with about 50-60% battery life.

The phone does not feel big (I have small hands); it is thin and light. I love a true "back" button. The sides of the phone have on/off and volume switches that are way too easy to move. Hopefully a case will make them a little harder to move accidentally. You have to turn the phone on and make a couple of adjustments to mute the ringer! It keeps a multi-bar signal through an area where my wife's B'berry and my 4 both lose signal.

My wife will get my old 4, and I have to choose to keep Andy or get a 4S in a week or two. One enduring thing is my fear of the Android Market. I have already gotten a couple of bad things that I HOPE I've been able to get rid of. I think you have to go there wearing a helmet, raincoat & prophylactic to protect yourself. The way I read the app warnings is that you have to give the developer access to your phone. (Why does the developer of a flashlight have to have access to my computer- oops- phone?) Maybe that is buried in the iTunes agreement too, but I haven't seen it.

I still haven't decided.

good luck with your decision, you should look at some reviews or comparisons.

I was splitting my time between the 4S and the Galaxy S2.

Last week my Nexus arrived and both of the above sit in a drawer.

The Nexus blows away the iPhone and is better than the SG2.

The Nexus speech to text is just an example as when you do speech to text, the text appears on the screen as you are talking, no waiting on the reply from the servers. It happens as you talk. Apple will never do this.

The Nexus is from the "future" compared to the 4S.:(

I want your phone budget!!!!!!! :D

Alright, another question, if you like iOS and iPhone better than Android, tell why. if you like Android and whatever android powered phone, tell why. to be more specific, what is it about iOS or Android that keeps you on that platform.

hmmm? whats a troll? im pretty new to forums and stuff

----------

Is this a homework assignment? I feel like an essay was just assigned

just trying to spark conversations

----------

another thing i wanted to say. even though i like widgets on Android, They do sort of annoy me cause they kinda make it look cluttered. not that anyone cares, im just sayin.

There are many other posts that ask the same stuff, why don't you just go read them?
Why don't you post links to some of those threads instead of making condescending posts that provide no information of value?

----------

Perhaps one should catch up to the latest release information and not rely one day old news.....
Perhaps one should pay attention to post timestamps, since one's link was posted 12 hours after mine

You ask a question like this on an apple fansite and the majority of answers are going to be in favor of Apple and iOS. You ask it on an Android fansite and the majority will be in favor of Google and Android. There are so many of these threads out there and none of them get anyone anywhere.

I will say, that I feel sorry for the ineptitude of those users that literally cannot get through half a day on their Android device, and this is coming from a person who has used more iPhones as his daily driver than Android devices...

I like the freedom of android but the simplicity of ios.

I prefer my galaxy s2 to my previous iphone first gen, but I also like my iPad.

They're not really comparable as they offer different experiences.

what is it with people attacking newbies who don't know about search? For ****s sake, the newbies don't know! Why not TELL them about search, or link them to a relevant thread rather than berate them without providing any resolution for them

Depends, you can't go wrong either way. I've had iPhones since they came out. But just got an SGII and it's excellent. Screen is gorgeous especially once I tweaked it with an app, and battery life is every bit as good as my iPhone 4 which imo was tops and better then my 3GS or friends 4S.

Think the problem with Android is with all the devices, a lot of people get them not knowing the different systems and screen resolutions etc, and when you start downloading games or just using the phone in general it's kinda mehh. On my SGII though I've downloaded games that were on my iPhone (compared to the Retina 4 since the 3GS is way outclassed now lol) as well and they work 100% sweet on the SGII. I think the lower end phones is where people end up with fragmentation among other issues etc as a lot of the apps now are taking advantage of the higher resolution of the newer screens and some of the low end ones were/aren't running updated OSs.

I know a lot complain about the Android size in general, but I don't get it, unless your talking about the larger 4.5"+ or bulkier phones. My SGII is slimmer and lighter then both my iPhones and with the 4.3" is about perfect. Browsing online is night and day better on this phone. My SGII UI is smooth with no hiccups like other Android phones I've played with.

Now I jailbroke my 3GS the day I got it, and it's still to this day customized to the hilt. Didn't mess with the 4 since usually gf uses it. So it's cool with how much you can do with Android... and yet still if you root and rom you can do even more with the phone and get rid of any bloatware making the phone even faster and even getting better battery life which is already excellent (at least on this phone).

Now why didn't I get the 4S. Well for one thing, I got in on that Samsclub 96 cent deal for upgrading which was flat out insane for any phone let alone this one. But mainly b/c the 3.5" screen was feeling too small to me, and ever since iOS 5 neither phone get's almost any WiFi reception, yet downgrading to previous OS on the 3GS and WiFi works fine, but can't stay downgraded as app's I had on there worked with newer OS. Plus there's no JB for the 4S, and most likely won't be before at least Feb 12' if not longer since their having issues with it. And a lot of the tweaks I did are what made the iphone so much better to use then stock, I mean SBS settings integrating so well with notification center... would annoy the hell out of me without it. I can setup any widget or setting I want on this SGII, where I want it, and how I want it.

Oh yeh.. Swype is the bomb, after you get used to it and it starts adding words to the dictionary, it is so fast and easy to use. Way better then the regular keyboard that came with the phone that sucked imo compared to the iPhones keyboard. At least with swype you get a great keyboard to regularly type with, or use the swype motion with. So if you don't care for swyping you can at least use a keyboard thats way better then the regular pre-loaded one.

Anything with text is also a huge advantage to Android, Apple's system drove me nutz whenever you would try to correct a word or sentence and could never place the dash where you want it 95% of the time. With Android you can go to any word and any letter in that word or just go back through a sentence so much faster and easier then Apples text system.

+1 For mentioning Swype. I wouldn't ever text any other way. Period.
I own the Virgin Mobile Optimus V by LG. Stock but rooted. It is by far one of the coolest and fastest phones I have ever owned and well worth the $100ish I paid for it. I like Android. The free apps, Google Nav and Google Music and the market itself make it a great experience. Bottom line is if you go Android then simply research the phones and buy one with good reviews! Then you won't usually be bothered by QC issues. Simple.

You also get what you pay for with Android. I'm not knocking the lower end handsets but some are reeeallly lame. Comparing the iPhone to a Droid phone is apples to oranges like Windows to OSX. Bottom line is find your needs and get the phone to suit them. The open nature of the Android source makes for some really amazing apps. And you have live wallpaper.

I have used an iPhone. Smoooooth. Turn it, smooth. The experience is amazing. And it's like that on every single one. But thats it, they are all the same. Things like miniHDMI for video have been built into Android phones for years now accessible with a 5$ cable. With an iPhone you get a hands down smooth experience, but it's the same as the other iPhone owner's.

So step back and decide what you want. For sure stability with unbeatable customer service, and amazing hardware... versus an open source with new and innovative things coming out daily across different handsets (and some are on par with an iPhone as far as ergonomics, hardware, etc.). It all boils down to what you need and want. But these two architecture of phones are entirely different animals.

Hello all, newbie forum member here. I'm actually currently debating btw. the 4S & the Samsung GS2 myself, so I thought I'd pop in this thread.

I was pretty much all set to get the 4S myself, until I found a video on Youtube displaying the capabilities of USB On-The-Go on the GS2. That to me was some what of a tide changer, as it basically allows one to have huge amounts data on cheap USB sticks that one can utilize/import/export any time without the need of a PC.

I really wish Apple had something like this with their "iPad Photo Connector Kit" thing. But alas, the only thing that comes close is made by a Taiwanese company and is quite expensive (8GB = $95).

Does anyone know if Apple has plans for something like USB OTG?

A comment about Swype.....

I had a Samsung Fascinate before my iPhone 4S. I used Swype on it for over a year. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread....at first. After a while Swype got chock full of "typos" and would never type what I wanted. I'd clear out the cache and it'd help revert it back to "new" settings but Swype continually got crappier and crappier as time went on. By the end, no matter what I did, it hardly ever typed what I wanted.

When I switched to the iPhone, I was quite concerned with going back to a "tap" style keyboard. The last one I had was my Blackberry Storm but even that was nice because the screen "clicked" like an actual button. However, after getting my iPhone, I was quite pleased with the keyboard and input method. It's fast, easy, and seems to correct my typos no matter how far "off" I am from the real word. It's quite impressive actually. Even if I accidentally type a real word, but it doesn't necessarily make sense in that particular sentence..it still gets corrected.

Bottom line, I prefer my iPhone keyboard and input method over Android's Swype. Another downside to Swype was ZERO updates. In over a year, there were no updates to Swype. I'd give Swype a shot again if it came to iOS as long as they worked it over a little better and added more user selectable features and options to it. Particularly, with the dictionary.
