OS3 had 5 betas.
I believe OS2 had 4 betas, that's all I could find on Google.

With 3.0, it was 8 days between Beta 4 and Beta 5. Then it was 33 days between Beta 5 and GM to devs. I don't think we'll see another beta, just GM on June 7th.

Regardless, I don't think we'll see another beta, especially since the phone is rumored to be out mid June at the latest. Whatever build Apple has internally is probably already being loaded onto the phones in production. They won't release another beta and then wait for testing for a GM. The GM has already been declared internally. We'll get it after the keynote.

Yeah, Like I said in my last line, I don't think we'll see another beta.

I think it's safe to say that iPhone 4 will be running 4.0 out of the box. I also think it's safe to say we'll see OS4 in June for the 3GS/3G. What do you think is a reasonable release date? Also, is the GM build the same as the final build they release to everyone?

It will probably be two days before the new phone goes on sale, like last year. I hope they do it differently and release it 5 days after instead, to alleviate the strain on Apple's activation servers for the new phone. As I recall, there were still problems last year when the 3GS was released. I know most of it was from all of the new phones being activated, but some of it was also from people trying to get 3.0 activated as well.

I believe GM build is the same as the build released to consumers.

is there a good chance that there wont be a beta 5 and go straight to gm? or did they announce it already?

The big problem was when the iPhone 3G was released and iTunes crashed and people were not able to get their iPhones activated. I remember that like it was yesterday. I was @ the AT&T store in Oak Lawn, IL when it crashed and everyone was like

Somebody made a really good point about 4.0 beta 4 being the final release as reports have indicated an early June release for the iPhone. Shiny new iPhones are already in their pretty littles boxes ready to be distributed :)

beta 4 is still very buggy. just using the camera or photo app makes my phone crash. i even tried dfu mode then reinstalling the software and it still is very buggy. i do have a 3g phone. it is quicker then 3.1.3 but it still needs to be tweaked and fixed

Agreed. The camera functions are way too buggy to be GM. I'm guessing beta 5 then GM. If it wasn't for the camera bugs I'd say otherwise, but I don't see it being final yet.

Perhaps they will fix the camera bug for the GM, meaning they don't need another beta to fix them. Just fix it and pop that into the GM build

I really do hope we see beta 5 today :)

Can't wait for WWDC 10 though! 6 days left!

I was at the AT&T store around 5pm (EST) and my buddy was having trouble activating my 3G, and that was on July 28th!
I was talking about was them having the same problems (albeit on a slightly smaller scale) when the 3GS was released. You had people trying to update and activate the first and second gen phones, and then trying to activate the 3GS too. It'll be the same this year if they release 4.0 two days before the 4th gen. The following Wednesday would be much better. And then to go further with that, if they rolled it out based on your time time zone or sales region.

what time do they usually post the betas or gms on the developers site. i know its usually every other tuesday or longer but i cant remember what time they post them

I don't think we'll see another beta today. WWDC is just next week. It's too little time to do anything proper, so no beta. Just another release at WWDC - be it GM or beta 5.

I would also think that we would see iBooks appear before the GM (unless it's only going to be available on the new iPhone since it is rumored to have a higher resolution screen).

I'm thinking iBooks will be an app one gets via the App Store. Just like on the iPad.

iPhone OS has a different build for each device. It's certainly possible that OS 4.0 is running very nicely on the iPhone HD whilst still having a few bugs on older devices.

On some of the earlier betas there were bugs that affected just the 3G and some that affected just the 3G S.

My iPhone 3G S is running pretty flawlessly now on Beta 4.

I wonder if we will be able to walk into a store on 7th June and buy an iPhone HD? Have there been any leaks with regard to shipments to stores etc.?

Insightful comment on the Dev Center forums:

Possibly a new BETA today though pretty unlikely considering WWDC is next week. There is also no chance we will see a GM today or before the conference. There are always a few surprises in the OS they don't want us to know about. There'll probably be a lot more new phone stuff in the GM and maybe even some features they haven't publicly disclosed.

I highly doubt that it will be ready for a June 7th release considering that's the day that they will announce it on. My guesstimate is the 18th.
