With the full version named after big cats, they'll name the mobile version after rodents.

The next version will be "gerbil". :D

OS X Mobile and Post PC Convergent Devices Edition Series 4

According to Steve at D8, it originated with early prototype of the iPad, then released for iPhone, and finally released on iPad, so

People have read far more into what Jobs said, than what he actually said :)

Jobs simply said that a prototype touch tablet gave him the idea for the iPhone. He did not say that the same OS was involved at all.

In fact, according to various iPhone histories, we've been told that Apple didn't begin the mobile OSX port until early 2006. Before that, they had even considered using Linux for the phone.

As for the name, the one I see most as an abbreviation is "iPOS" for iPhone / iPad OS, although I can see why that would turn some people off.

I think it was Fadell who was pushing for Linux, would have been a huge strategic blunder looking back.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Cisco's OS for their routers is called IOS. So doubt it.

as if something like a trademark or copywrite ever stopped apple, tell me didn't cisco copywrite the name "iPhone" and didn't fuji copywrite "iPad"?

Either Mac OS or Apple OS becomes redundant then. You choose.

Not necessarily. If this OS truly is the way of the future of apple it makes sense to have a simple name such as Apple OS. i actually speculated a couple of months ago that this summer we would find the release of Apple OS 4.0 to go along with the new A4 chip that will be used in the ipad iphone and ipod touch.

People would think i"piece of ****"

How about POS; Portable Operating System?
:D

Yes he did:
Walt: So when you built this OS, you did it in a phone. Why? Why not a tablet first.

Steve: I'll tell you. Actually. It started on a tablet first.

Steve: I had this idea about having a glass display, a multitouch display you could type on. I asked our people about it. And six months later they came back with this amazing display. And I gave it to one of our really brilliant UI guys. He then got inertial scrolling working and some other things, and I thought, 'my god, we can build a phone with this' and we put the tablet aside, and we went to work on the phone.

oh no... its gonna be “iTouch OS” :D

It makes sense to me that iPhone OS needs to be renamed if its on an iPad and iPod.

This is crazy. I don't think apple would change the name of the OS for the iPhone. This would be like microsoft not calling it's Desktop OS Windows anymore. Or even like google dropping the Android name and calling it something stupid like Cyborg.

Apple has spent a lot of money building up the iPhone brand. It is well-known and therefore valuable. I don't think they'll try to build a new OS brand any more than I think they'll abandon OS X.

and i dont think they will be doing either any time soon :D

Explain?
The OS on the iPad & iPod Touch is iPhone OS 3.x, hardly “crazy” to think they may change the name to fit in better with the other devices it runs on.

Well for starters it seems like this all developed because i guess some unicorns and kittens landed inside of someones head and suggested that apple was going to change the name of the OS.

It doesnt make sense to change it. Here is an example AT&T stands for American Telephone and Telegraph. Telegraphs don't exist anymore. But do you think AT&T would really change their name just because telegraphs are not used anymore? No they wouldnt.

So i get what your saying about changing the name of the OS to fit the device. But at this point unless they are going to radically going to develop 3 Different OS's custom fit for each device they will most likely leave it be.

I'm not buying your argument.

As for your at&t analogy, first of all a company name has a lot more invested and takes a lot more to change and has a lot more consequences with brand recognition etc. Secondly, We are talking about Apple Computers... err wait.. I mean Apple Inc. See my point? ;)

Also, we're not just talking iphone, ipod touch, and ipad anymore. There is talk of apple TV getting the OS. We have also heard rumors of the iMac getting a touch screen. The OS is rapidly changing, mutating, and being thrown on to a lot more devices. This OS could easily replace Mac OSX within the next 10 years Would a name like iphone OS really be the best option??

But the truth is the longer you wait, the more difficult it is to change a name (i.e. iTunes) so that's why the name change would have to be soon. My bet is that if we don't have a new name tomorrow, we will have one a year from now. Otherwise it's too "stuck".

And then we have this comment

Let's not forget that Apple already changed it once. iPhone OS was once called "OSX iPhone"

Obviously going to be called : iPOS, which is what apple haters call it already right?

Yeah and since were talking about Brands i think the iPhone Brand itself is very valued.

I still don't agree. For example the Windows OS runs on Set top boxes do they call it windows set top? No it's called Windows Embedded. Windows OS runs on Netbooks is it called Windows Netbook edition? No its still called windows.

I simply don't think they are going to change the name. And i'm not sure where all this talk even came from. And yes we have heard many rumors about macs but that's all they are simply rumors. I'm a realistic and i like facts not speculation.

Now in the end i could be wrong they could change the name. But untill i see something pointing in that direction they aren't changing it. and FYI where is the proof that apple TV is even going to run apps? Other than some secret source by a want to be journalist (a.k.a blogger) from engadget? :D

OSX 11? :D

most people don't care about it.

Word.

According to Steve at D8, it originated with early prototype of the iPad, then released for iPhone, and finally released on iPad, so I think from the beginning Apple had the vision of this OS being something beyond simply the iPhone. A name change would be great provided it encompassed that idea of universal compatibility among a variety of Apple devices.
