There needs to be an option to turn off notifications for certain inboxes. i.e. i don't want to see my work emails if i'm on vacation.

Also - i would argue that apple hasn't even gotten it right in the Mail app. Gmail is still a pain, and I think multiple accts. are almost near impossible.

Dont know why you wouldn't want one mailbox. Saves time going through all your email.

If it was exclusive, one or the other, I could not do integrated email. I have email accounts I use for work, I have accounts that are exclusively for logging system events. I have accounts that I use for fun. I have accounts I use for side projects.

I have filters that tag and move much of this stuff, Separating what I need to know now from what I need to know later from what I just need documented in case I need it later is a big part of what keeps me sane and productive. Some days I get an email every five seconds. I can't imagine having it all in one place.

slightly OT

sorry for being slightly OT - i have searched the forums but have not seen a satisfactory reply yet.
my question: is there a method for synchronizing ALL my IMAP mail folders on the iphone?
this works fine on the the laptops and desktops, so it can't be my provider's fault.
i would like the iphone's mail app to start and automatically download mails to all the subfolders, without having to call up each subfolder individually.
this is a pain, and expensive if you forgot to refresh the subfolders before leaving home and need to download missing info abroad.

(in addition: osX mail.app has the 'synchronize' menu item, any similar method for the iphone?)
would be great.

Because the new way is a superset of the old way. If you have a Universal Inbox, you can use it as the old inbox or the new style.

Which still doesn't explain the arrogant and stupid assumption that because I prefer it one way, I must not be familar with how it behaves.

On my home machines I prefer each of my email accounts to be under one, single collapsible hierarchy. This is simply not the case with my Mac's mail client.

I much prefer thunderbird's approach.

Could you maybe post a screen cap. I think I follow what you are saying, but am not positive. It would help show the difference from the screen cap posted earlier.

what we have here is a failure to communicate. What the one inbox people are saying is, if you get the one inbox function, you can choose to view everything in one inbox OR separate inboxes.

If I am not wrong, you think they are saying the many inbox choice is bad. They are saying, the upgrade will let you read your email any way you want. I think most people on both sides agree choosing the way to read your email is good.

Now I am off to fix the Middle East thing.

as for me... I would really love this feature, I NEED it!!

because I have 6 email accounts. 2 on each of Gmail, Yahoo! & Hotmail.

and I agree with some ppl who said that it needs to be just like Mail's way of merging. when you enter into a "mother" inbox, you'll see all daughter emails, when you enter into a "daughter" inbox you'll see only its emails. got the picture? :p

that way, I can do the following:

• All Mail
* Gmail
- Account 1
- Account 2
* Yahoo!
- Account 1
- Account 2
* Hotmail
- Account 1
- Account 2

so, if I want to see all my mail I'll enter "All Mail", if I want to see just my Hotmail messages I'll go to "Hotmail", or I can enter into an individual inbox at a time.

PS. [out of subject] why does 'Yahoo! Pop' work on iPhone and does not work on the Mail app on MacOS?? it's frustrating! I mean, even Hotmail works!

I don't want this feature either. I just want it to be easier to navigate between inboxes. Hopefully this will not make it even more difficult.

On the left is Mac's mail client. Note how there are three different hierarchies, one for the inbox, one for sent, and then one my three different mail accounts [mountain, gmail and work (blacked out)].

On the right is Thunderbird. Note how each mail account is completely contained within it's expandable hierarchy. This is my preference. It allows me to expand the email I'm interested in. Everything is there in its nested hierarchy, way less real estate used, no distractions with the hierarchies of the other email accounts. Less chance of me sending an email from a personal account instead of my work account (or the reverse).

For me, and how I use email, it is a lot more efficient.

The current iPhone mail app is more similar to Thunderbird's method, my preferred method.

Ah yes, in that case then the breakout of the Inbox, Spam, and Sent would be annoying. All other folders show up in the list further down, but again the three mentioned before are missing.

I hope we get a centralized mailbox. I have been waiting for this feature for a long time and have considered the lack of it one of the (not truly annoying) annoyances of the iphone OS.

No, that's not what some of them are saying.

Some of them are saying if you don't prefer the universal email, it's because you don't understand it.

That's what I take exception with, and that attitude is condescending and ignorant.

I think people are annoyed with the endless stream of "there better be a way to disable it!" and "i hope they don't make this change" messages, which do seem to indicate a lack of understanding of how it would work (since in practice - assuming it works like mail.app on Mac - it wouldn't prevent you from reading your mail the way you currently do). Because if people do understand it, and if they still don't want apple to make the change, all they are saying is that the rest of us should suffer (since making the change doesn't hurt them at all).

I have 5 different email accounts so that my emails relating to different things will be separated. I hated losing track of emails because I would be getting emails about school, videogames, my job, my other job, and junk mail all in the same inbox. I do not like this idea:(

ditto

Iphone is ok as is, i'd just like it if this poxy macbooks mail app would pick up my yahoo, hotmail and work accounts ok and send stuff back and forth.

Yeah me too. What the hell is wrong with Apple these days. I might just as well buy a Fisher Price iPhone and Mac if everything gets dumbed down like this.

Dumbed down? This is the exact opposite of dumbed down. It adds a feature pretty much every other mail client has without preventing you from accessing mail your tired old annoying switch-between-boxes way.

You understand it, but most of the people posting about how they want to "turn it off" and how the inboxes are MERGED clearly don't understand it. Maybe they've never used mail.app, or maybe they aren't clever enough to realize Apple wants to make as many of the apps work the same across all platforms, but they don't seem to get it.

NakedPaul, I understand your view point. But you also should consider the dumb statements made by people like nubero below.
