Are the kids really wearing Apple Watches these days? 1/3 is way higher than I would have guessed.

This is astounding success for Apple in America, their real difficulty is replicating it elsewhere.
In Latin America, probably of the different level of average consumer buying power, WhatsApp is really popular. In Europe, too, I would image for different reasons.

How old are you? Were you in high school 10 years ago? What do you think played a role in that flip?
I turn 42 next week, so my group ranged anywhere from 25 - 40 during that time. I think Android had more of that majestic feel because on iPhone, there was zero customization and on Android, people were rooting their phones with ease, even non-tech people. Once all the bells and whistles slowed down, I think people just went with the most reliable. That and Facetime and perception that you'll never get a virus on iPhones really helped swing it in Apple's direction.

I do wonder if the longevity of iPhones is also playing a factor. Even a hand-me-down iPhone from Mom or Dad still supports iMessage.

Very good point, unlike Androids that will get 2 years of support if you are lucky, these iPhones are like:

I am in higher education and on many campuses in a state school system. I see what students are using and also follow a few FB groups of parents with students in higher ed. Parents of new students often ask what computers to purchase for their kids. The overwhelming preference by students for technology in higher ed is Apple. Probably 80% of these kids will be Apple users for life.
I don’t see that. That has been the case for decades. It changes, when they have to use computers at work. Windows is still highly dominant in the workplace. As an engineer I can’t run the most common mechanical CAD software, SolidWorks, on macOS. Previous big-company employers used elaborate device management systems and locked down employees’ computers to an extent not imaginable with Macs. The tipping point hasn’t been reached there, yet.

Well Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung and the next android brand in town could have 10 year updates and it would still be inferior than iOS (that's not to say Apple's current software quality is stellar)

Is that an accurate characterization? I am not an Android user and therefore wouldn’t know directly. I do know that the Android ecosystem is very balkanized.

this is crazy when you consider that 5% of teens don’t even own a smartphone. Android is slackin

As it should. 10 years from today the % will be tripled. iPhone Rules The World! 👑
That will never happen unless Apple roll out the leasing/upgrade program worldwide, especially in markets where iphone prices are highly marked up by Apple themselves away from their original price points. If Apple roll out the financing/upgrade program in this markets, I can see more people buying iphones as now they don't have the sticker shock.

Just chiming in I just did a repair (I work in HVAC) on a Windows engineer who unabashedly showed me his Mac that he uses to code for Windows. I thought it was hilarious.

😂😂😂 I literally LOLed at this. Very good point as my wife’s mother just switched to android because the Lock Screen and background can have a video playing on it. Pretty sure that’s the only reason why she switched.
The lay consumers do pick their preference differently than us geeks. Many switch phones simply because of the color, even if the phone itself is inferior. In Asia, many people bought an iphone 5s back then simply because of the gold color. Many bought the Pro/Pro Max iphones simply to have the 3 camera holes (they call it the boba iphone).
