Why is the background so blurry?

no clue... lens must be dirty. the foreground isnt that sharp either

i take alot of photos and every once in a while with the right light get some crisp photos from my phone

You didn't miss anything. The Palm Pre phones that they have on display at Best Buy are these little plastic models that give you absolutely no idea of what the actual phone is like. Skip Best Buy, save yourself some time, and go to the Sprint Store if you want to see the Pre.
