That's the problem. This is a tech forum attempting to deconstruct a design-led company. But Apple does a lot of things differently, and if all you are doing is simply comparing Apple to everyone else and then go “Hey, Apple isn’t following what everyone else is doing, so I don’t think whatever Apple is doing is going to work”, I think they go down the wrong path.

Between this and the crossbody strap released earlier this year, it's clear that Apple is making a deliberate attempt to address the phenomenon of people carrying more tech gadgets around in a fashion-forward manner. It's also aimed at supporting new behaviours like taking quick peeks at the phone's display (for those without an Apple Watch) or having quick access to your camera (perhaps to support a future pair of smart glasses which may not have a camera due to privacy concerns).

There's also the larger theme of Apple continuing to experiment with fabrics (starting with the iPad Smart Keyboard), so I won't be surprised if Apple actually moves into a clothing line in the future.

I think it's interesting, I don't see myself getting one (which is more telling of my age bracket than anything else), and this is more an indictment of how this forum isn't always representative of Apple's overall user base, than anything else. 😛
You’re never too old to be a trendy Wendy.

Haha, so much for the naysayers regarding how overpriced they are. Apple knows who’s buying their products & knows how to create demand. Sure you’ll be able to buy a knockoff brand that’s much cheaper, but you’ll never have the real thing. Are you the kind of person running around with a fake Cartier watch band or purse? That’d be sad. Personally I’m not into a sock for my iPhone, I have pockets made just for them. 😉

At Singapore’s Apple Store now. The long version is all sold out.

Played with it for a while. Fabric feels nice, phone fits snugly, it’s really one of those things that has to be seen and felt in person to understand. A mere press release does this zero justice at all.

And funny. Even for an accessory like this, customers still opt for the more expensive models and eschew the cheaper options.

Seriously? If Apple got involved with designing tumbleweeds and selling them in their store, they would sell out.

Be worried when that stops being the case. iPhone air comes to mind. Also never judge initial demand of something as much to draw on. Apples supply could be extremely limited.

Think either the stocks were extremely limited or people may be buying them to resell at an even higher price. Absurdly high price for the product. Even if it is a limited edition product, would have liked Apple to sell it worldwide wherever Apple has an online store.

Why does this generation insist on looking like Hobos and clowns? A lot of younger people deliberately reject polished, put-together outfits because looking too curated feels inauthentic to them. Oversized, mismatched, baggy, thrifted, chaotic? That’s the point. It signals: “Hey everyone look at me, I’m not trying too hard.” or “I’m different from older generations.” and my favorite “I’m not obsessed with materialism.” Ironically, that becomes its own aesthetic. This generation dresses like “hobos and clowns” because: It’s intentional anti-fashion, thrifting and sustainability values, influencer culture rewards extremes, Economic pressure, Rebellion against past generations, maximalism cycle, Identity signaling. I think it looks ridiculous, but give it 20 years — it’ll be nostalgia, and the next generation will have its own weird aesthetic that drives them crazy.

If I had to make a stab in the dark, I'd say that Apple is paying careful attention to the young adult Asian market. Smart move with both this and the crossbody strap. It's interesting to see what plays well in SEA.

I'll hang tight. Belkin will have a knockoff coming in a couple months for a third of the price that looks close enough.

The price is utterly insane.
But, but, and I do mean, but, it’s Issey Miyake, dontcha know!? Well, it’s not him exactly, but the design director of the company. You know that Issey designed Steve Job’s iconic black mock turtleneck, eh? That is truly a major selling point! I mean, Issey and Steve y’all! *hysterically* It’s the PRECIOUS INCARNATE‼️

Really though, I do, and for many years, have admired Issey Miyake’s designs, couldn’t afford them, but he was very innovative. If anyone wants something from The House of Issey, I highly recommend his Eau d’Issey Miyake, it can be found for much less than the sock or whatever the name of this thing is now. I agree, the price is absolutely ridiculous and insane.

I'm sure these comments are not about to fill up with people who don't like it saying that they don't like it.
It will also fill up with self-appointed meta commenters offering banal observations and condescending eye rolls at people who are so bold to suggest that selling a sock with a cut in it for $230 is ridiculous. What do you think of those people?
