My response yesterday was that the line for the next great iProduct would be a little shorter next time. Looks like SJ agrees with me and having that kind of customer response to new products is important to Apple.

Well written letter too - refreshingly honest. You often hear people on these boards saying "don't wait" and "buy now" because there's always something better around the corner. Never thought I'd hear it from SJ himself.

Cool

I hope they never lower the price of anything again. Announce and shelve it at the same price.

This whole thing makes my head hurt.

anyone who doesnt think they were owed anything, or who isnt happy with the $100 can give it to me!

To be brutally honest here, for those of you that are complaining, suck it up. You paid to get one because you wanted one. You enjoyed it. So why are you complaining? Because they announced a $200 price drop. Would you be complaining if they didn't discount them $200? No. The only reason you're here, and angry with Apple, is because they made the iPhone cheaper, and open to a wider market. So what? You got exactly what you wanted. An iPhone. You paid to get it on day one, or sometime in July, whenever you bought it. Suck it up. You paid that price to be one of the few to have one. As Steve said, that's technology, live with it.

/rant.

Great job Apple on this issue too by the way. Shows you really have class.

If someone told you that you could buy the coolest phone ever and that Apple combined it with an Ipod and WIFI web surfing at it wiulu cost you $600. today oir $400 in nine weels, I still believe many would buy it today.

When the iPhone went on sale, many people waited in huge lines and many paid a premium price on Ebay and Craigslist even though they knew they could wait one week, not wait in line and get it for the normal price.

Those million people who bought it the first week HAD to have it at the git go..no matter what the cost. That's why I don't understand the bitching.

Apple made a decison, probably in the past two or three weeks, to lower the price for the final quarter and into the Holidays. A business decision to go after a much wider audience. Since they had these new Touch Pods, they figured that their manufacturing costs were lower across the several platforms. It made economic sense NOW. Not Two months ago at the beginning of Summer.

Apple didn't lower the price to screw you.

HAHAHA.

Kind of like this idiot.

iPhone idiot

My sister has been wanting an iphone, so I'm going to help her out and as incentive I'm going to sell her my 100 dollar gift card for 80 bucks, I'd rather take the cash because last I check they still don't sell booze at the apple store.

And we all win:
1. My sister gets her iphone, in which..
2. Steve Jobs gets more money
3. I get drunk off a nice bottle of whiskey

.

Just a quick question for those that called AMEX today. My claim apparently got approved around 5pm today. The 'examiner' said it would post within 24-48 hours. This was before amex got wind of Apple's response to the system. I wonder if my claim will still go through or they were all canceled. Anyone else have their pending/posting?

Grow up and take responsibility for your own actions.

THAT is the problem with America today. People feel entitled.

The fact that the $100 is store credit is ok by me. Might end up getting more switchers in the long run.

This whole thing still bugs me though, it really showed the immaturity of the people that I considered "kindred spirits" in the Mac community to the whole world.

This is a sad time to be an Apple fanatic. :(

Agreed. Today Apple and Steve Jobs are heroes, yesterday they were evil - people really are that dumb........

Uh oh.
Did Steve open up a can of worms?

Can't wait for all the iLife whiners to line up for a discount.
iMovie 08 is not the same as the previous version. Its missing vital parts.

So download iMovie HD... It's available to all iLife 08 users.

Oh how magnanimous of his royal Steve. Instead of money they give store credit so there is a better then average chance that what you walk out with will be whatever the cost of that new toy is - $100. They may as well have called it a sales promotion.
It would be as if the Microsoft settlement check I got in the mail last week (MN vs. MS.) could only spend it on a Microsoft product or a computer with a Microsoft OS.
Gah. I'm going to be sick at how many people think this is a good thing. Its simply Apple trying to save face in the wake of being caught with their pants down and....well lets not get into that image...its pretty
pukeface.gif

What really gets me isn't that Apple is doing this. They are a company. No issues with the act. Most companies play games from time to time. Its the loyalty factor. I understand bing a fan of a company. I understand enjoying a product. But stuffing one's head in the sand and acting as if what has happened is no big shake is....well hell its what got Microsoft to where it is today. If people want to make Apple better they should be pissed and holding their feet to the fire. Not saying that a $100 in store credit is good enough.

nice job apple!!

thanks for the credit. i will just keep spending more with you.

but.... i hope you start to play nice with NBC and the record labels. they need to have more input on pricing and more.

Actually, Apple has done this before. When they lowered the price of Aperture by $200, they extended a rebate offer to existing customers. I wish they would carry same approach over to the iPhone rebate, especially as they are actively granting $200 refunds to customers who have bought within the last 14 days.

That's just part of the normal price protection period that most retailers offer. In the case of Apple, the price protection period is 14 days. Other stores may offer up to a 30 day price protection (ie. Microcenter).

Unbelieveable!

I got an iPhone when they first came out and I am not upset by the price drop, mainly because I'm a big boy and knew what I was getting into and the value it would bring. But, what gets me in all of this debate is how Apple's able to easily manipulate the fanbois. First, I think Apple knew in the beginning that the original price would only be paid by the fanbois and there would be a quick price drop. Then, they don't offer anything to their most loyal customers initially. They wait and then offer a $100 certificate (that really doesn't cost Apple $100 and just goes to increase their market share as folks buy Apple products) and all the fanbois are cheering at how great Apple is and how Steve really loves them. If they offered the $100 in the beginning, think of all the whining that would have gone on. Now, they think they're special again and will go on to defend Apple to their deaths! Apple is an incredible marketing machine.

Ok , buy an episode of the office for 4.99

Was this a serious comment?

Now I am not complaining about getting 100 dollars back. It makes me feel a little better. But before we go and call steve jobs a hero, I think we should stop and access the situation.

1. I don't care what some of you people say about us whining, it was shady business practice to do the price drop so soon after it was released as well as dropping it so much.

2. We are still out 100 dollars, though not the 33 percent of the price before, it is still substantial enough to feel taken advantaged of.

3. He is getting good press for taking 200 dollars away then giving 100 back. I dont know about you, but I can't help but feel that this was part of his master plan.

Despite apple "making right" for the price drop, I, for one, am disguisted by the way they do business now and plan to never buy another apple product. Call me bitter, ungrateful or a whiner, but I refuse to blindly let a company take advantage of my money, my loyalty and my patronage

I wonder how many people will take Steve up on the $100. I think many will say "screw it". I hope so. Serves you right. You should have known better.

don't be greedy.

sigh...this feeling of entitlement that looms around these forums. you guys are outrageous.

HA! Are you for real? Seriously.

1. Shady business? Shady business is using the profits in 401k's to finance wars in Africa (see Fidelity). They made a price cut. WOW! Soooo shady.

2. You are not out for $100. YOU paid 599 for the phone. No one made you, no one twisted your little newb arm. Yes 33% is a lot, but Apple didn't have to do jack about it, most people would have forgotten about it a few weeks later and moved on the the "one more thing...". Those of you who didn't forget would have been replaced 10 fold by those who bought it for 399.

3. Yes, he is getting good press from this. How does that harm us? Well, more people will buy it, more demand for upgrades, support, etc. Yes, that hurts us. A master scheme? Who cares.

So since Apple made "right" you aren't going to buy their products anymore? Ok, so why do you buy any products anymore? Corporations around the world don't care one bit for you, the only way they care about you is if you buy what service or product they are selling. THAT IS IT! Even the United Way could give a S**t, that's why their CEO is one of the top 5 highest paid CEOs in the country (yes that is comparing it to all other companies) and only a very small fraction (something like $.05) gets SPLIT UP to multiple charities.

You are a whiner, you didn't go blindly. If you did, then blame whoever had the gun to your face and made you do it. YOU thought the product was worth $599 and you paid for it. No one took advantage of you. They are trying to make it right. Name a company that tried to make it right with their customers? Have fun with your HP or Dell or whatever company you decide to make "THE SWITCH" to.

If I am entitled to 200 from AMEX, I expect to get it. It's their policy. I won't be taking the $100 from Apple if AMEX comes through.

I actually just finished reading this thread from beginning to end and really started to wonder, has there seriously ever been any thread that has talked about and praised Jobs so much? This is like the Steve Jobs victory lap in here. Interesting read though.

Nooooooo, please don't boycott! Oh wait, nobody cares.

It was a nice move on Jobs' part, but also unnecessary. All the people complaining about the price drop are really out of touch with reality. Sorry to be so blunt. This is the COMPUTER industry. For those that waited DAYS to buy the initial product at the initial price, you KNEW what the price would be ($600 + gen 1 hiccups). You KNEW in January.
The reality is, components always come down in price and, if not for the holiday season, Apple probably would have kept the price where it was. Also, it would have been difficult justifying the iPhone at $600 while the iPod touch, with double the storage, is $400.
I think I'm going to complain that Apple charged me TOO much money for my iMac 400MHz DV SE. It was about $1500 back in 2000. For $1500 now, I get a system about 20x the speed, storage, memory, etc. I've been ripped off. That's way more than $200.
