iPhone price cut: Official response from Steve Jobs

hahaha, yeah i have a good sense of humor, and i really do hope you are right. I spent 3 hours going to the apple store earlier today after talking to a customer rep who told me that they were giving full refunds to everybody, only to find they were'nt. (yeah it was naive of me to think they were and no i dont think they had to do anything) And then coming home to read steve jobs letter. I have invested alot of time into this.

I hope that store is far away, but I could believe that you got lost in the store with all the pretty lights and shinny things. Again, you blame steve for the time YOU invested. You remind me of the people in the 21st century who blame the cigarette companies for giving them cancer. "They made me do it, I didn't do much research about it, but they made me do it"

THIS ISN'T 'NAM! THERE ARE RULES!

My first post.

Hi there.

I've lurked for a long time, but this explosion drew me in.

I bought an iPhone during the first week they were available. I knew that was paying nearly $800 for it, considering the cost to dump Verizon.

I was happy with it when I bought it. I'm happy with it now. I am pleasantly surprised that they're going to give me $100 to buy Leopard next month.

Now, for those of you screaming about Apple tearing your heart out by dropping the price on this, consider this...

Imagine saving thousands of dollars to buy an Apple IIgs, RGB monitor, 3.5" FDD, and 2 MB of memory. And then Apple announcing that they're discontinuing the whole product line, no more software ever again. Effective immediately, because the new Mac line was doing so well.

I wouldn't touch an Apple product for nearly 20 years. I actively disparaged them, delighted in their failures, etc. But the current incarnation of the company has made some excellent equipment, and they pulled me back in. I now have a couple of iPods, an iPhone, a Mac Mini (PPC), and an Airport Extreme Base Station.

So, for those who are still foaming about $200, think about how much it would have sucked if they had announced iPhone v2.0, and that iPhone 1.0 was never to be patched again. That would deserve vitriol.

$200 maybe deserves a little heartburn. But nothing else.

Calm down people.

Your $1500 iMac 400MHz DV SE didn't have its price cut 33% to $1000 bucks, 69 days after you bought it.

I understand the point extremely well. If I had bought an iPhone on 6-29, I would have shrugged off the drop-in-price and merely commented how people get the same thing for a better price. If it were 2-4 weeks later, maybe I'd be a bit annoyed- MAYBE. I'd still accept it and move on. Early adopters of a brand new product should accept that they are paying a premium price for an unknown glitchy product.

I bought a 10gb iPod for $399.
I bought a 60gb iPod for $399.
NOW, it's $349 for 160gb.

Yup.

Perfectly stated.

America: land of the soft and weak

America is the only place on earth where people would complain about a price drop. You whiney babies are ridiculous and spoiled brats.

to all you winers

1. Please don't buy crap you can't afford via cash or one CC payment.
2. Don;t ever buy stocks or invest in anything as you have no idea how the business world works. ( think loosing 50% of your retirement in 2 days or 50k)
3. Learn to be happy with you have at the time you have it, not what is there tomorrow or yesterday.
4. Get a collage education. ( i am making a pretty wild guess that most of the wankers don't have a collage education.)
5. Again don't buy stuff you don't NEED. You don't NEED an IPHONE.
6. Always buys stuff on a CC with price and loss protection for the first 90 days.- again, if you don't have a credit card dont buy a f..king expensive piece of equipment.
7.Get a life and move on.
8. Look at the recent stock market crash and people lost millions in one day.
9. Give me a bat so i can come over and beat the crap out of you for being an idiot, it might teach you a lesson or two in life.
10. The price fell 33%, i am sure your last late fee on your $100 CC charge was $30. again 30% in one less than one month.

There. Something else to complain about.

I agree. Get a collage education! Your lexicon is way off.
I know a lot of people with lot's of ideas, but NO idea. An educated "wanker" is still that, a "wanker".

Does it matter where he is from?

well it does when he call us Americans complainers. We also like to shove things in other people's faces...like "I GOT AN IPHONE, I GOT AN IPHONE!"

HAHAHA! But seriously, I know what you mean. I mean its almost as bad as complaining about working conditions and how we are treated by our employers and then rioting in the streets and breaking cars that belong to our hardworking neighbors who are also rioting and breaking our cars until the government steps in to solve the problem. Just like that (cough:france:cough)

yeah, get a college education. Just like Steve Jo.........oooooooooooh, wait a minute.

That was my point. YOU DON'T need one! They hand out degree's on toilet paper these days.

No kidding, I have one. No idea how, guess I'm wicked smat. Let me know where you get your toilet paper, I need another one.

:) Not a problem... I got the old "Computer Science Degree" after working in a research position for 3 years. heheh they made me do it because it looks good for the company when applying for tenders. The young guys with no degree certainly code better than the monkeys with PHD's.

Anyway, my original point was to say; you do not require a degree to have a valid point in this world. There are plenty of educated people that are making wrong decisions day in and day out. The same people who make it worse for the rest of us.

Any of you WANKERS without a college degree goign to tell me how to make my iphone die so i can return this pos for an 8gig

Glitchy?

Again, missing the point. You're leaving one very important factor out of the equation. Time. If the price went down $200 after 6 months, I would have been completely fine with that. But with the iPhone, it was just over 2 months. That's not long enough, yet. I know things are speeding up. I'm fine with that too. But at this time, at least with computers, PDAs and yes, phones, that's just too quick.

Apple did the right thing by offering the rebate. Completely unexpected. Completely unnecessary (they are a company, after all) but I'm really glad they did it. In fact, I'm in love with Apple all over again. Which means I'll buy more of their stuff. Which means, in the end, they'll recoup their $100 tenfold. Easily.

Very smart move from Apple. And as far as I know (just too tired to Google anything, gimme a break) unprecedented.

1. Oh, those are the rules for price cuts? What does your company do for price cuts?

2. yeah, they'll recoup it, cause they build their products for free.

3. yes, unprecedented.

This is nice. My husband and I both have iPhones and I was feeling pretty sour about everything yesterday when I added up the cash to $400 lost for a mere month. Not perfect, but still pretty nice.

I was vowing never to be a first adopter of any Apple product in the future (i.e.; ultra-thin laptop), but now might reconsider. :)

1. Oh, those are the rules for price cuts? What does your company do for price cuts?

Yes, in the bible, Jesus said that a price cut after 2 months is too short. But after 6 months a price cut is A-OK in God's book.

I am truly amazed at how all of the people that have posted intelligent arguments defending the price cuts and bashing the "whiners" fail to address all of the issues here. While I am an early adopter of new tech gadgets, I have none of the allegiance to Apple which may have motivated many to purchase. I fully understand the consequences of early adoption. Here are a few points that don't get consistently addressed.

1. The reason I am ticked (not so much tonight) is that this price cut didn't pass a simple lithmus test: Given the opportunity to have the iPhone for 69 days "early" for $200, would I have done it? The answer is a clear "hell no"!

2. People seem to think that you can't have believed the iPhone was worth $600 and still be pissed. BS. Just because I was willing to pay $600 doesn't mean I would not have preferred paying $400.

3. The timing is almost unprecedented. 69 days?! For most other tech, the whole month of September would still be considered the "early adoption" period. I love all the weak examples of other products depreciating over entire years. This was 2 months! Clearly a simple case of too much too soon.

Overall, I'm still happy with the phone, but Apple may have done irreparable damage. I wonder if potential iPod Touch buyers will pause for 2 months before they take the plunge?

Now this made me laugh. Thanks for the laugh :) The humor, the humor.

You are right, most of us wankers don't have a collage education.
