Apple began high volume testing of the upcoming Push notification system for iPhone applications earlier this week. The system offers 3rd party applications the ability to push notifications to the user even when they are not the running application.

Each application will ask for permission to provide push notifications upon launch. Once authorized, you can customize the type of notifications you wish to receive: sounds, alerts, and/or badges. Alerts provide an SMS-like pop up dialog while badges simply add a number to the corner of the app's icon. An additional gallery of screenshots is provided by MyAppleGuide.

The Push notification system will accompany the iPhone 3.0 release which is scheduled this summer.

Looks good - though they still need to enhance the lock screen a lot more.

I guess we'll actually get a notification on a new email now too if the email was pushed..?

Why is there no ignore button like on SMS messages?

What do you mean? When the notification appears on the lock screen or to actually disable the notifications? Appears you can do the latter..

An ignore button would be a great addition.
I think I would opt for just the badges and sound alerts. From the looks of it that might get sort of annoying if you had a lot of apps on Push. Not to mention the screen would light up even on lock, so the battery life might be compromised.

I really really hope they put SMS privacy and notifications like "notify" on the taskbar. Nothing like showing your phone to a friend and having a message from your girlfriend pop up ;)

SMS only has Ignore/Reply buttons when the phone is unlocked. When you get a text when your phone was sleeping/locked, that's exactly how they pop up.

i really like the badge notification system. I think it's cool to see a number on one of your icons and also, that way you know there's an update, so you can go there yourself.

Tried it out and it works pretty good from what I can tell.

But we will see...

Great. Now they need to fix the popups so they don't take over the screen - imitate the Android notification drawer or something, so they pop up and then minimize if you're in the middle of something. Badges and sounds are excellent though.

Oh, that is on the lock screen. My Bad. I'd like to see the notification how it appears on the home screens or while in another app. Does it have the Ignore/view buttons like an SMS?

Ah, I'd assume it would. I don't think it would just stay there when you are in the middle of something else and not give you an option to ignore it.
