Are these notifications transmitted as text messages ?

If so, ATT about to make some cash as people switch to that crazy $15 for unlimited text plan!

Looks good - though they still need to enhance the lock screen a lot more.

I guess we'll actually get a notification on a new email now too if the email was pushed..?

Why the lock screen can't show new emails, upcoming events, etc. is beyond me. It simply doesn't make sense. I know that Apple had that patent out for a while indicating they were investigating the possibility, but it's something that should have been available since the beginning.

Does it cost anything to receive these push notifications?
Will they use up my SMS credits?

I was wondering the same. If it doesn't.. then someone will be able to come out with a great messaging application so I don't have to pay 10000 dollars a month for unlimited text messaging.

I have been testing it and i DO NOT like that you swipe to view and then the app opens up. It seems like as long as that message is on there, there is no way to swipe to unlock the phone and not see the message. The next notification I get I am going to try and see if there's some way to ignore it and not open the app.

Wow! You pay a lot more than I do for unlimited texts! You should really call ATT and ask for their new plan.

I think that the majority of PNS activity will be handled by a small number of apps - facebook, beejive, etc. I hope the servers can handle the traffic coming from only a handful of apps.

edit: and I agree, they need to add a little "x" to the corner of the lock screen notifications (for PNS as well as texts) that will mark the notification as 'read' so you don't have to manually go and get rid of it.

i agree on this point. i would prefer to tap the notification, then slide to view it. in a lot of circumstances it is useful to be able to "reply" to an sms just by sliding.. but for my calendar alerts it is very annoying.

i would settle for being able to turn the "slide to view" feature off for calendar alerts.

i can't wait for push notification so i can stop getting AIM and facebook messages via SMS.. i spent so much time erasing random ###-### text message numbers.

Cant you just not set it to have a badge? Or is that simply dodging the problem in that you want to see the alert on the unlock screen but be able to unlock to the home screen? Does it not work the same way as SMS when the after sleeping the iphone then waking it again the unlock option changes back to homescreen instead of SMS?

Thats what annoys me about the iPhone, the alerts are so intrusive and force you to stop whatever you're doing to address the alert.

Palm WebOs approach is much nicer, alert appears at the bottom of the screen and does not interrupt your work.

Wow a 3G symbol! that must be a new feature?! Oh wait, I'm on O2. That's why I've never seen it before.

I have only got like 5 push alerts from the app, but I'm starting to think if you have multiple apps sending you alerts it's going to get really frustrating with the home/lock screen.

I already get annoyed with the text message from twitter sometimes and it will basically work the same way just using Apple's servers vs att.

I wonder if people will come off those unlimited text plans once push goes into play?

Yes, you do. It's crazy.

But most people get unlimited so it's not so bad.

Whats really crazy, the huge cost of calling cell phones in europe!
When you compare what you get, the USA is actually better than other countries...

Seriously, I don't understand why any of you think for even 1 second that these would be consisted text messages. They have NOTHING to do with AT&T SMS in any way. AT&T will not know if you are receiving push notifications or checking your email, they'll only know how much data it took for you to do it. They WILL use data either Edge/3G or Wifi. So they will be billed to you as data, so you better have a data plan (like you are supposed to anyways)!

Well as long as you are serious! If you weren't serious, I wouldn't have read this at all...

Thats why you can pick and choose which apps you want to send you push notifications. If you dont want too many, then don't pick too many. Or just turn on the badges because they won't interrupt you.

Not only doesn't it cost anything, this is going to impact the SMS service quite a bit. Poor AT&T. Once you are set up with it and apps come out, the only SMS you'll want to get get are when people on other phones text you. All those Twitters, breaking news headlines and other services that SMS you can now be push notifications to Twitterrific, AP News and other push apps. And a lot of the SMS texting can be done with Instant Messaging apps that push notify as well.

And battery life? No problem. If you have push mail set up, you already have the single persistent connection all push apps will use. Go ahead and add 100 new push notification apps and set them on full blast, they will have zero additional effect on battery life. Nice!

I expect we will see an iChat app from Apple that supports push notifications pretty soon...

Yeah totally.. I'd love to see up coming iCal appointments, unread email count etc.
