I have been testing it and i DO NOT like that you swipe to view and then the app opens up. It seems like as long as that message is on there, there is no way to swipe to unlock the phone and not see the message. The next notification I get I am going to try and see if there's some way to ignore it and not open the app.

The above happened the first alert I got, but the second time I got an alert it gave me the option to 'view' or 'close'.

Cant you just not set it to have a badge? Or is that simply dodging the problem in that you want to see the alert on the unlock screen but be able to unlock to the home screen? Does it not work the same way as SMS when the after sleeping the iphone then waking it again the unlock option changes back to homescreen instead of SMS?

That is what I haven't had a change to try. So far every time I got a notification I have been distracted and doing something else and didn't think to try the lock button. I turned on as many of the news choices that I can in hopes that I will get to try that today.

yes, can we get someone to mirror the images?

I've attached some screens I took for my blog below.

Thats why you can pick and choose which apps you want to send you push notifications. If you dont want too many, then don't pick too many. Or just turn on the badges because they won't interrupt you.

I understand how it works and it's a step in the right direction, just saying Apple should come up with a new way to handle push, text, emails and stuff on the lock screen.

Interesting to see it get pushed to the home screen like that.

I'm really hoping that for us exchange/enterprise users that they can make the home screen show what the first few appointments of the day are, or the header of a few emails as they come in so I don't have to keep on unlocking the phone each time I hear a beep.

That would be HUGE for me! Off topic I know.

I really really hope they put SMS privacy and notifications like "notify" on the taskbar. Nothing like showing your phone to a friend and having a message from your girlfriend pop up ;)

This has happened to me multiple times and is extremely embarrassing. I can't believe this feature has been overlooked for so long.

Make it happen Apple!

love this

finally! this will be a huge change! I have used the Todo app and it is ineffective with 2.2.1 because calenders can't be subscribed and the app can't have notifications. Now all of that changes. I will be now buying apps that I usually wouldn't because of push notifications. I think apple should force developers to use push notifications if it could be usefull

whats the battery diff with this on vs. off?

I've only received a small number of the alerts so it hasn't had a impact on battery life. If you get 50 notifications a day I'd imagine it'd be just like receiving 50 sms messages a day.

I really don't think there will be too many people that configure this to have many apps give you the "alert" notification but rather opt of the badge and maybe the sound. Vibrate might be nice.... One app that I may want to use alerts for is IM applications... Something that having that instant notification is important.

But most people get unlimited so it's not so bad.

Whats really crazy, the huge cost of calling cell phones in europe!
When you compare what you get, the USA is actually better than other countries...

I beg to differ. Text messaging costs are the most ridiculous thing in the industry. A markup of over 4000% (not kidding) is ludicrous.

Yes, it is. Text messaging pricing is up there in my book as one of the worst legal fleecing of customers by companies in the U.S. today. Unlimited price plans limit this fleecing, but it's still a fleecing.

in america do you have to pay to receive SMS messages? if so that sounds crazy!
It depends on your carrier. AT&T, which has the exclusive for locked iPhones in America charges for most received SMS messages.

However, there are a number of other carriers across the country that do not. In general, the bigger your mobile company, the more likely it is to try to get away with charging for received text messages.

In Chicago, the leading cell phone company (#5 nationwide, behind T-Mobile) does NOT charge for incoming SMS, voice calls, or MMS messages. If it supported GSM, I'd be with U.S. Cellular instead of AT&T in a heartbeat. Unfortunately. U.S.C. is CDMA and AMPS.

They REALLY need to revamp their notification system if they're going to do this!
Those pop up messages are way too intrusive and in your face, but the badges are way too subtle!

The Palm pre's notifications rock, it pops up from the bottom but does not obscure the screen. You do not have to close them or anything, you can keep working as you get notified.

Android's notifications are in a clever and useful pull down menu. I'm pretty sure that when you get one it alerts you up top, then you can slide your finger down from the top to drag down a little list of notifications.

On the other hand, Apple just pops a pop up straight in your face! And you need to stop typing whatever you're typing or reading whatever you're reading and deal with the pop up screaming at you. With badges though, you would have to scroll through all of your home screens to see if anything has a notification (if you turn off the annoying as hell pop ups). They need to take a clue from palm or google and revamp their notification system - especially if any app will be notifying us in addition to the apple ones!

Just wait til she can send you MMSs...

WOW...this should be a whole new thread with stories from this one issue.

I've got about 5 borderline horrifying tales of this problem

One includes my boss hovering over my desk with my phone innocently sitting in my dock, when I get a "come over tonight?" text from my GF.

whats the battery diff with this on vs. off?

I haven't noticed a difference in battery life with this on over the past 2 days. But I have noticed that ever since I put 3.0 on my phone battery life overall has increased a noticeable amount.

And 3G performance is quite better. Web pages load almost twice as fast.

Why the lock screen can't show new emails, upcoming events, etc. is beyond me. It simply doesn't make sense. I know that Apple had that patent out for a while indicating they were investigating the possibility, but it's something that should have been available since the beginning.

i agree they need to add much more to that usless lock screen - what a waist of valuable relestate.

i think it would be cool if the "home screen" (or any screen for that matter) could peal back (like the map function does) to reveal notifications. they could put a blue dot on the screen to indicate you have messages to look at. then you would not be interrupted at all.

the palm pre looks cool (but also looks like it could be annoying)- the appllication looks like it shrinks to show the message. if you get a few notifications all at once or over a period of time - the application your working on keeps shrinking and then going back to normal. looks like you could easily press a wrong button if it moves.

Does it cost anything to receive these push notifications?
Will they use up my SMS credits?

technically its free but what most people in thid thread arent taking into account is the likely price increase in apps that support push notifications because devs now have to maintain servers.
