for those of you reading who didn't by iPhones... why? i suspect half of you thought the price was too high (it was) and the other half can't/won't move to AT&T (with some overlap).

Both for me. Initial price was just higher than I want to pay for what it is and for cell service, I prefer Verizon, with whom I still have six months on a contract.

I am serious. The phone's been out for two and a half months and so far they've only released two "bug fixes" that didn't really fix anything. I want some additional functionality on my handset. I wasn't talking about upgrading the hardware.

Well, the iTunes store update will be coming soon. And, did you notice that in the presentation, the picture with the icon for the iTunes store had a blank spot next to the icon where three other icons should go? Could just be a coincidence - they might have just placed it there for design/presentation purposes. Or not. Perhaps more applications are on the way.

the wifi iTunes store is on the right so it is next to the iPod icon. I don't expect any other new features, but I will settle for group texting.

for those of you reading who didn't by iPhones... why? i suspect half of you thought the price was too high (it was) and the other half can't/won't move to AT&T (with some overlap). i bought my iPhone on Jun 29 and had it one week later (order online, it shipped to my house direct from China, btw) but could make the switch because my contract with Verizon was out. my friend wouldn't buy one because he is still stuck on a t-mobile contract, another friend bought one and did pre-pay (no contract). so readers, tell us, why didn't you buy originally and why will/won't you now.

For me it was the price. I bought a 2nd gen iPod when they were announced and didn't really think twice about paying $399 for it, but fast forward 5 years and I was having a hard time justifying $599 for the iPhone. Ironic though, because when they dropped the price I bought one and when my wife saw it she wanted one too. So now, we're a two iPhone household.

So you'll get the wireless iTunes Store by the end of the month (on your iPhone), no?

Yeah, and wireless iTunes was certainly on the top of everyone's list when they were talking about what features were missing that they'd like to see in the first software update.

Sorry, but I still prefer to own the physical media. Wireless iTunes is not a "feature" so much as it is a way for Apple to siphon more money out of your pocketbook. I'll take cut-and-paste, mass texting and the ability to send a photo to more than one person at a time over e-mail.

my wife and i contributed to the post-drop sales.

when you're looking at 1 phone, $600 compared to $400 is a big deal. but when you're looking at 2, the difference is between $1200 and $800! and i couldn't get one without my wife getting one, or vice versa, that would never be lived down. so we were waiting for the price drop, because spending $1200 on 2 phones is ridiculous. we didn't expect the price drop so soon, but when it happened, we went out that friday and got 2 of them. sure, $800 isn't exactly cheap either, but at least now it's in high-end blackberry, palm, and windows mobile territory.

Well for me, AT&T is not available in my area. I had them and had to switch to CDMA form GSM due to the lack of GSM coverage. If service becomes avail. in the near future(recently signed a 2 year contract w/ US Cellular) I might switch. THAT IS IF MY WIFE LETS ME BUY AN iPHONE. :):confused::confused:

Apple 2.0 puts faith in a recent note by Gene Munster claiming that the pace of iPhone sales has tripled since the price break.

It should be noted that Munster and other analysts were initially extremely bullish on early iPhone sales numbers, claiming that Apple had sold upwards of 500,000 on opening weekend. Such high expectations were unfounded, as Apple announced that 270,000 had been sold.

Munster's latest claims appear to be a little more thorough, with accompanying surveys of retail stores. Munster notes that such a large surge is not sustainable, and believes sales will stabilize at a 50% increase, or 1.28 million by the end of the quarter.

That does not take into account the fall holiday run up and back to school buying trends. When high school and college students get back into class they observe what is cool and then purchase. This secondary buying wave directly hits smart phone markets which spike in late September.

I think you're a bit delusional if you think parents will shell out more than $200 for a phone for their kid, let alone $400. Granted, I have seen some kids who do own them, but I live in the richest county of the 3rd largest state in the US. Most kids' parents can't afford that kind of expense.

I see kids with PSPs, ipods, PS3's, xbox 360's. The cost for these products range from $180 - $600. Don't be shocked for parents to be buying a phone that cost $300 - $400. When I went away for college my parents bought me
a $1500 laptop. I'm sure kids these days can pressure mommy or daddy to buy him/her an iphone. It's the american way.

why? I dont think the iPhone or Apple Products (minus the iPod) was ever aimed at people who exclusivly shop at Wal-Mart. There are plenty of people out there who actually spend money on their kids because they Love them/ Have the Money/ Want to take care of them. Whatever maybe the reason.

But why not. $400 is not that big of a deal from parent to kid.

........so readers, tell us, why didn't you buy originally and why will/won't you now.

Well I didn't buy originally for a number of reasons. I will list them out for you.
  1. First i don't run with hurd as I prefer to avoid running off a cliff blindly. By that I mean I'd rather sit back and fully evaluate what I'm about to buy. That involves comments from real owners and seeing how the software unfolds.
  2. Second; The current software package just doesn't meet all my needs. I need a file manager and all around better access to the system store.
  3. It was to expensive for what it delivered. That has changed dramatically but there are other issues.
  4. I really could use a camera free model. There are a couple of issues here, one being that they are not permitted at work. Another is that I'm a bit of a camera nut and the provided camera simply isn't worth the expense to me. Finally I'd rahte have the money for the camera and PCB space it takes up dedicated to additional hardware.
  5. This camera really needs to be more open, Open enough that I can access it from Linux. Open enough that I can connect via Wifi to my Camera. Open enough that I can use Blutooth for the things I want to sue it for.
  6. Storage space is an issue, 8Gig is right on the border line of what I think I need.
  7. I still have this opinion, justified by nothing, that this iPhone has been rushed to market and that the software is basically unfinished. Either that or Apple sees fit to ignore corporate needs and the needs of more advance users.
  8. I'm really hoping that something like OpenMoko can get off the ground. They are taking their time but they could have an alternative in the NEO. Frankly this comes back to the issue of a SDK. I think sooner or alter Apple has to address this. AS some of my concerns get erased by the continuous improvement to the iPhone, and competitive products come to market this will be a key issue. Frankly I'd settle for a Python based development environment.

Don't get me wrong I really see the iPhone as a state of the art machine. It is a Cell phone that all others will be judged against in the near future. The Cell industry is pretty tough though and It won't take much for somebody to come out with something better in a base line product.
