iPhone SDK Delay? Another Touch Device?

TUAW's Erica Sadun shows evidence of additional hardware support built into the iPhone's Mac OS X software. Amongst the "platforms" listed include the iPhone itself (M68), the iPod Touch (N45) and an unknown identifier N82

Platforms = (M68, N82, simulator);

Sadun also suggests that she has heard that the iPhone SDK may be delayed, though practically dismisses her own comments as a "rumor".

TUAW has traditionally not been a reliable source of rumors and are quick to wash their hands of their rumor reports by calling all rumors "unreliable". This is posted for interest only, but without the confidence of the original rumor reporter, it's difficult to take these reports too seriously.

especially if it has a pressure sensitive pen and a decent size storage area although the air shows that apple are going wireless with everything now so likely you will need an external hd

Im getting pretty sick and tired of apple jerking everyone around. The iphone is underperforming software wise to EVERY phone on the market. It just has a great interface.

Perhaps the extra device is the iPhone nano.

Tablet would be nice but then again its kinda hard to imagine how it would play out.

Perhaps there will be an invisible hardware upgrade in the near future or the leap to 3G is already being planned.

Do you have an iPhone? I don't want to speak for anyone else, but I'd say the software on the iPhone is pretty great

Besides missing MMS (which is a huge deal, even though I don't use it), I'd say that the iPhone sets the bar pretty high!

Eh. Don't really know what to think since it said the source has been ubreliable in the past. I hope they don't delay the iPhone SDK. I'm looking forward to some 3rd party apps that doesn't require a jail break to run.

from a marketing point of view, companies such as apply try to have tiers in their product line (in terms of functionality). laptops: macbook air, macbook, macbook pro. desktops: mac mini, imac, mac pro. ipods: ipod shuffle, ipod nano, ipod classic. 'touchdevices': ipod touch, iphone, ???.... i think it may be a bit soon, but eventually i think apple will introduce an iphone/pda. not everyone with an iphone wants a pda (and hence, reason for not just 'adding' pda functionality to the iphone), but i'm willing to bet there are a fair number of folks willing to spend a little extra for a hybrid iphone/pda device- i'm one of them.

edit- i think the 'tablet' people speak of will be the pda. a full blown apple tablet won't happen for a while.

The issue is iPhone software is way ahead of the competition where it has a feature. But, it is missing a lot of features poorly or reasonably implemented on other phones. Support for stereo bluetooth is just stupid to be missing in "the best ipod ever". Not having the disk storage mode makes the higher capacity devices just released less attractive. Not being able to send email with multiple photos is an issue. The browser does not auto-suggest when filling in a form, which on the iPhone keyboard is an issue.

There are many areas the iPhone can improve and features missing that are available on other phones. That said you can get my iPhone only from my cold dead fingers. The quality of what is there far outpaces other phones. I look at the devices that are trying to copy the iPhone form factor but ignore the software quality issues and just laugh.

Oh I have an iphone. I love it, but to sit here and say its the best phone? Not a chance. Its just the prettiest phone.

While those are downsides of the iPhone, neither of those (#3 and #5) are software related.

iPod Tablet

Hi all,
hopefully the SDK delay is not true... iPodTouch/iPhone platform needs it to succeed!

Regarding "Another Touch Device" .... I'm really waiting it!

What I need from a new device:
- Play Music/Video etc (iPodTouch is perfect ... but please more codec)
- Internet browser (iPodTouch is perfect ... but not complete)
- Touch qwerty keyboard (iPodTouch has it... but too small for my fingers)
- Bluetooth: All the profiles for audio,video, data sharing and to connect to wireless keyboard.
- Pen: I would like to be able to sketch some notes and drawings
- PDF/books reader: This is a main scope, I will use it on the train, I want to read, take notes, highlite.. Current iPodTouch seems to have bad resolution for reading.... fix this please...
- mini/microSD reader: it would allow for extending capacity

What I do not need from a new device:
- Phone: I like to have a separate and small phone. It is risky to carry around such a precious device every time. Too easy to loose/break/scratch/steal ...
- GPS: I already have GPS in my car... and google maps is more than enough when I'm around

I'm currently looking around to buy such a device... current candidates are Nokia N810, Archos 605WIFI 30Gb and iPodTouch 16Gb.

In my opinion none of these completely satisfy me.... I will wait few months more...

Archos and Nokia seems very good but.. hey... how can I have such a powerful device but not enjoying the super UI developed by Apple? No way.. I want it! I need it!

Please "dear" Apple.... increase the size of you iPod touch by 1 or 2", add full bluetooth, put a stylish pen in the bigger body , if you have space for an easy-to-access minisd reader that would be great...

Then it is just a matter of software development.... I'm patient ... I will give you some more month to develop new "great" functionalities... you demonstrated you are able to do it... and you will release new software for free... I'm glad you are doing this to my appleTV... I bought it the first day because I believe in you... ...

Am I the only one who wants such a device???
If I am the only one the Apple marketing dept. will never produce it....
If I am not alone in this hope ... I can continue dreaming... and waiting ...

Who's the more unreliable? Erica's "unreliable" rumor, or Arnold's post about an unreliable rumor?

I'm with you on that one. N82 is the multi-touch trackpad on the MacBook Air.

According to the rumor this stuff was found in the iPhone's OS X, so surely that would discount the MacBook Air due to it running regular full fat Mac OS X.

What with the codename being N82, and the iPod Touch's being N45, while the iPhone's is M68, I'm gonna guess that the "new", if at all true, device is not cellular, and rather a larger Wi-fi based device.

As far as the SDK being delayed... I think no. It wasn't too long ago that Steve had said to us that at the end of February we'd have our SDK. That was what, 2 and a half weeks ago? Plus, Apple can't afford another software delay. They'd stick every man on this to get it out on time if they had to.

The new device probably isn't iPhone 2, iPhone Nano, or anything like that. I also don't think it's the Air, iMac Touch or anything like that. Since it's in the iPhone's OS X software I bet it's going to be one of two things:
A simulator for running iPhone/iPod Touch apps on your computer or:
Something like a big iPod Touch. Tablet-ish, but not incredibly functional. Mostly focused on ease of use and portability. It could accompany the Apple TV.

I really doubt this. A chip is a chip. Not a platform. If you were to add support for three finger scrolling and pinch etc, you would write it into the software. The N82 moniker is something else.

Haha! BBplayer doesn't appreciate what he has- he thinks just because there is a fat, ugly flimsy phone out there with the ability to blow bubbles Apple is somehow failing people. They carefully sat down and worked out what MOST people NEED then set about to do it fantastically. Not a half hearted attempt to satisfy the DESIRES of a select few. And they made it REALLY EASY and SEXY.

Gradually, after all the people who never even considered getting a smartphone are happy using their iPhone, they can gently introduce new functionality without scaring everyone off. Genius.
