It’s exactly like the SE: off-season intro, $399 pricing, re-using older design, latest processor, smallest available display, etc.

The only difference is it’s 4.7” instead of 4.0”.
I disagree, it’s exactly like the 6, 7, and 8 series phones its based on. The SE had a completely different form factor. If Apple would of used the latest iPod body and stuffed the 8’s camera, touchid and the A13 chipset from the 11 that would be an SE. The iPhone 8 is already $399 and the new phone is just an updated version of it for the same price

As a huge iPhone SE fan, I do not think it should be called the SE, but the 9 would confuse the hell out of people.

I don't get why anyone would be interested in this 5 times warmed up old design. In 2020! You could have bought this years ago. And please don't tell me anyone needs an A13 cheap. It's a cellphone, not a Macbook
It's not complicated. Not everyone wants a phablet... and Apple isn't going to support the SE much longer. There are plenty of options for those who DO want an iPhablet but only one (soon none) for those that don't

Agree. The two will serve the same purpose - an iPhone that combines an old form factor with newer tech in order to achieve a low cost phone that will have a longer useful life than the aging one on which it is based.

Sure, the SE ended up being embraced by a sizable contingent that simply liked the 5S form factor and put high priority on a small device. But that was not the reason it was created. Going forward, Apple will attempt to (and, I believe, succeed) serve that market with the new 5.4" iPhone 12.

Apple has no doubt determined that the majority of people who want a cheap phone don't care what size it is, and if they do care, they probably want it to be as big as it can be at the desired price point. At the same time, Apple has also no doubt determined that the majority of people who wan a small phone don't care how much it costs (within reason) - they consider the diminutive size a feature and are prepared to pony up for it.

Why dont they just call it the iphone mini? Makes more sense than the iphone 9 or SE2

You know what I think? Consumers don’t care about what the iPhone is titled. I mean, Apple could label this phone with the most obscure title, consumers will see the smaller form factor/size, that’s what’s going to sell this phone. The only people who get really upset about iPhone titles, are members on this site.

“Hello, I’m here to upgrade my iPhone.”

“Great! You’ll love the new iPhone 9!”

“9? But isn’t the 11 already out? I don’t want a phone from 2 years ago.”

“No no, you see the iPhone 9 is newer than the iPhone 11!”

“So is the iPhone Ten newer than the 9?”

“No, it’s also older.”

“So it’s backwards? Is the iPhone 8 newer than the 9?”

“No, the 8 is also older.”

“Then why is it called the iPhone 9 and not the 12 or 11s?”

“Oh, that’s because the 9 is a more budget-friendly model.”

“Then why not call it the SE2?”

“To prevent confusion!”

Either it's an 8s or a 9.

Either way, it's a damn good "starter" iPhone !

I don't believe it's intended as an upgrade option, ONLY for newbies into iOS.

I believe the Back Camera's image sensor will be 8 Mpx ... 3 GB today isn't what 3 GB was back when Apple introduced their first 3 GB DRAM iPhone, the 7+, which was a speed demon with its RAM.

Today, Apple doesn't release 12 Mpx iPhones with ONLY 3 GB !

They learned their lesson with the X & XR .. XS got its 3.7 GB, & the 11 got it's 3.7-3.8 GB.

Once it becomes common knowledge that the 8s/9 will ONLY have an 8 Mpx Back Camera image sensor, the enthusiasm for it will settle (way) down.

For those who don't know, a 12 Mpx image sensor is needed to capture in 4K ! ... provides the necessary border area for Image / Video Stabilization (& that is with OIS ALSO enabled).

Regardless, I believe the 8s/9 will sell EXTREMELY well ! ... especially to those under 12yo, & those over 65yo.
The “SE2”, no matter what Apple calls it, will be a phenomenal upgrade for anyone with a 6, 6s, 7 or 8. At $399, it’s a steal.

3GB RAM is plenty, it doesn’t need the 4GB of the XS or 11.

lol at your thinking it’ll have an 8 MP rear camera; the 6S, 7 and 8 all had 12 MP sensors. Even the SE had a 12 MP rear camera lol. No idea why you’re making up that non-fact.

iPhone SE 2 would be a pretty awful name but iPhone 9 is not far behind, it is just ridiculous.

They should call it iPhone 11 mini
Why? It looks a lot like an evolution of the 8 and nothing like a devolution of the 11. Is there something inherently ridiculous about the number 9 that’s lost on me?

I would really love max hardware in ther form factor. Or at least the camera quality. That’s the one thing that is keeping me on the bigger phone at this point.

I'm not sure that people who desire the "SE" and it's future derivitaves are looking for a full sized iPhone device. the SE's biggest selling feature, (aside from affordability) was it's smaller, more simplistic size for users who are looking primarily for a phone first, that's small.

upscaling it's size to that of the iPhone 6-8 is not the point. especially since the 7 and 8 are still around.

But that’s part of the problem, if Apple starts transplanting the Max hardware into an entry-level iPhone as this phone is rumored to be, then it just will increase the price point, which would detract attention away from it. I think the whole target demographic for this phone is to keep it relatively affordable _and_ in a smaller/compact form factor.

Which drawings?

According to Kuo's latest reports, a 4.7" iPhone with A13 SoC is arriving early 2020 with 5.5" iPhone 9 Plus arriving early 2021.

t would be odd to launch a 4.7" iPhone Spring 2020 and then launch a 9 Plus a year later. Apple tends to launch new lines simultaneously. It sounds like Apple wants to keep around the classic iPhone form factor for those that are budget conscious and / or prefer TouchID over FaceID but if they're going to do that they should do it right so it develops into a clean product line. Something along the lines of this for Fall 2020 would work;

iPhone 9 / 9 Plus ($399 / $499)
iPhone 12 ($699 / $799)
iPhone 12 Pro ($999 / $1,099)

That way only the iPhone 9 lineup with the classic form factor is relegated to LCD screens while the new modern-looking iPhones are OLED screens. No confusion.

How much smaller of a phone do people want?

4.7 is small.
i think 4.7" display isn't the problem. it's the body size/shape.

a 4.7" display could fit into a body that is barely bigger than the SE now, if it's got similar edge to edge design as the "X".

What I don't think people are looking for is just anothre rehash of the iPhone 6-8 design language re-released as the "SE".

Something like this IMHO is what SE owners would prefer:

I’m none of these. And I will buy one because it will be a current, updated replacement for my 6s that I can afford on my very limited budget.

Makes perfect sense. And sure, you could just go buy an iPhone 8 today for $450. But while that will only be supported for the next N releases of iOS, the iPhone SE2/9/whatever will be supported for the next N + M releases where M is whatever Apple determines is appropriate before releasing a new iPhone SE3. And that SE3 will have absolutely nothing in common with the SE nor the SE2 other than it will be based on the low end iPhone available at that time, with updated process/memory/other-minor-things.
