i think 4.7" display isn't the problem. it's the body size/shape.

a 4.7" display could fit into a body that is barely bigger than the SE now, if it's got similar edge to edge design as the "X".

What I don't think people are looking for is just anothre rehash of the iPhone 6-8 design language re-released as the "SE".

Something like this IMHO is what SE owners would prefer:

That makes sense. It it looked like THAT render, I'd consider it. That would be a pretty phone.

You know what I think? Consumers don’t care about what the iPhone is titled. I mean, Apple could label this phone with the most obscure title, consumers will see the smaller form factor/size, that’s what’s going to sell this phone. The only people who get really upset about iPhone titles, are members on this site.
Bingo!

Yes, please. iPhone 9 fits better with the current rumours. At least the iPhone SE fans will have less to be disappointed about if this happens. It won’t be claiming to be a direct successor of their much-loved iPhone. I do wish there could also be a true SE successor, however, since this model had been so popular with its users/owners.

But that’s part of the problem, if Apple starts transplanting the Max hardware into an entry-level iPhone as this phone is rumored to be, then it just will increase the price point, which would detract attention away from it. I think the whole target demographic for this phone is to keep it relatively affordable _and_ in a smaller/compact form factor.
And for those who prefer TouchID over FaceID

I fully agree that SE owners who bought the phone because of its size would prefer that. I'm one of those people.

Thankfully, that phone is coming, as long as you are willing to pay the going rate for an all-screen iPhone (which as you say, is what we want) along with the rest of the latest iPhone gadgetry and gimmickry.

I am not sure how the possible name of the upcoming phone (which, in and of itself is rather meaningless) is really important, given that the name has no bearing on the functionality and use of the phone.

that makes sense, though I wish it wasn’t so. I recently picked up an SE during that Best Buy Fire sale to use as a gym iPod. It just felt very refreshing for some reason. I wonder why it’s become large is expensive and high end and small is affordable and cheaper.

Why? It looks a lot like an evolution of the 8 and nothing like a devolution of the 11. Is there something inherently ridiculous about the number 9 that’s lost on me?

Not all - In fact based upon how it looks, I think we could call it the iPhone 6S2

I think they should call it the SE-X and come up with a compromise between faceID and touchID, where you have to touch the phone to your face to unlock it.

Every time someone posts this render my heart starts to hurt and I start looking for a tissue.

It's absolutely killing me that Apple won't make a new SE sized phone along these lines.

Obviously, what I post here is now just speculation.

I imagine it's not done due to margins. The volume sales of this device aren't going to match those of the larger variants. While entirely possible that it's still profitable to produce and sell, Apple has probably done the math that the desired margins of profit they strive for arent there. They would rather you go buy higher volume, and thus higher margin devices.

It just shows one fo those disconnects between what Apple does, and what we want. We want devices, even if it means slightly less margins for the corporate entity of Apple. Apple just wants profit margins and are willing to not produce a device that doens't give them what the investors want.

I don't know if I believe this. Naming it 9 when it's newer than the X and 11 would just cause confusion. Marketing wise you want people to know that it's new.

I agree.

The realist inside me says "start saving for the 5.4" base model" (preowned), because that's my only hope for a smallish & usable iPhone moving forward.

I hope it's not too heavy.
Weight is another thing I LOVE about the SE.

The volume sales of this device aren't going to match those of the larger variants.

What I don't understand is "how do they know a modern small phone won't sell"?

They literally don't sell one and haven't for years now.

They were dead wrong about their butterfly keyboards.
They have at best "misfired" with the TouchBar

They could be wrong here too.

I truly believe there's room for an "iPhone Air" that is small, light, pocketable, less expensive - any combo of those attributes would find some marketshare, I guarantee it.

I just know too many people still using (and buying more of them) iPhone SE's and I see too many 5s and SE's out there still. There's something going on there more than, perhaps in addition to, price.

Makes sense. The ‘X’/‘10’ was the point where all new phones had Face ID.

Calking it the 9 does sound crazy given that the 11 has just been launched, however it makes sense as it feels like more a successor to the 8 & as the SE is associated with the smaller 4 inch screen from factor, they’re wise to steer clear of that.

I don't get why anyone would be interested in this 5 times warmed up old design. In 2020! You could have bought this years ago. And please don't tell me anyone needs an A13 cheap. It's a cellphone, not a Macbook

I think lots of people would be - those who just want a form factor that they are comfortable with and/or those who are price sensitive. Lots of people just want something that works well and don’t care about ‘the new’.

I'm so happy I got a new XR from O2 for £329 few weeks ago.

I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for information about SE 2 but eventually just couldn't ignore such a great offer for XR. I do not regret it at all. Get used to a bigger phone within couple of days. I'm surprised how easy the "transition" process was. And the phone itself is a beast!

I disagree, it’s exactly like the 6, 7, and 8 series phones its based on. The SE had a completely different form factor. If Apple would of used the latest iPod body and stuffed the 8’s camera, touchid and the A13 chipset from the 11 that would be an SE. The iPhone 8 is already $399 and the new phone is just an updated version of it for the same price
It’s exactly like the SE in all the ways I mentioned: off-season intro, $399 pricing, re-using older design, latest processor and smallest available display.

The 8 is $449, and it only has an A11 and 2 GB of RAM. The “SE2” will be a great upgrade from 6/6s/7/8.

I owned an SE, it was a great phone and form factor. I think Apple could’ve sold it longer if they wanted to in their lineup, but obviously wasn’t making enough money, which is probably why they discontinued it. Even though this new ‘iPhone 9’ may not be what the iPhone SE once was, at least Apple still considering releasing a smaller iPhone, when other smart for manufactures have abandoned anything less than 5 inches.

I feel that too, but I wonder how the battery life would be on a small iPhone. The iPhone XR and 11 have incredible battery life, because they’re chunky and have big batteries.
