Why would they even bother. Just keep selling the iPhone 8.

Probably just to get the baseline specs up to a new minimum so they can keep iOS moving "forward"***

***lately "forward" for iOS hasn't been so great in terms of features and bugs and software quality

The range will look a complete mess.
Today we have that

Then in March 2020 we'll have that

and then in September 2020 we'll have that

I am sorry but I don't know how anyone can explain iPhone 8 and 8 Plus dearer than the 9 in first half 2020 or the 200 dollars jump between the 9 and the 5.4 inch 12, and it gets worse if they keep the current 11 in September.
What am I missing?

Makes sense that Apple would call it the iPhone 9. It would give Apple more of an excuse to jack up the price. If they keep “SE” in the name then everyone is gonna be looking for that $399 price tag again but if they just call it the iPhone 9 then it’ll be easier for them to justify bumping it up to $499 or even $599 in the public eye. I don’t think Apple is really gonna make a phone with those specs only $399, even though we all know they could totally afford it.

If you told me 2, 3 years ago that Apple will release a 400$ phone, I'd say no way.
But now, cheap phone manufacturers are seriously eating into Apple's profit at the low end, so I can definitely see them releasing a budget 400$ phone. At that price, it will sell like hotcakes.

This does make sense (I think).

Calling it the SE2 would likely upset consumers considering that an SE should be the size of an iPhone 5/5s. By calling this an iPhone 9, it means it's an SE2 in spirit, but not trying to be an SE2.

It's weird yes, but technically speaking they (Apple) never released an iPhone 10. It's the iPhone X.

At this point though they should just use SemVer and call it the iPhone 8.2.0.

Don't get it. Just update the internals of the SE and call it a day (the name can be SE - 2nd gen). We already have iPhone 8 that's more than capable of running iOS 13 and making phone calls.
OR iPhone SE (iPhone 8 design) and iPhone Classic (iPhone 5 design)

How much smaller of a phone do people want?

4.7 is small.
i'd like a 3.3 to 4"with edge to edge screen. that would be perfect. I don't need or want a bigger screen. I use my phone as a phone and for podcasts, and maybe occasionally look up directions. I don't need a computer with me 24/7.. i have a thing called a computer for that. in fact I have a few, a nice 30" desktop or 13" laptop. so why would i want to hunch over any handheld device.. when im out in the world i like to appreciate the world. not be a zombie staring at a screen all day.
What i do need is 128gb minimum. I changed my plan to very little data so i need a big library to store lots of podcasts.

I had an XS and hated it, went back to SE when i found a new one this summer.

what i also know is if apple don't release a phone that is physically the same or smaller than my SE i will never buy another apple product after 20+ years using only apple stuff. They've lost me with their computers this year, my latest laptop isn't apple.
my mac mini is great but if i don't have an iPhone when my new SE dies then I'll have little reason to stay with apple at all.
apple has been selling crap for years now, look at the poor quality of their laptops, and the cables and accessories are literally the worst on the market.

ill keep my SE until i break it, and if apple don't release something new hopefully palm will release a model with better battery life. that's the only reason I haven't just switched to a palm phone already. If none of this happens ill get a flip phone and an mp3 player for podcasts.

Their other phones cost $1000 and they sell like hot cakes too.

It makes no sense to call it a 9 since the current phone is at 11. Just call it MCK, Ming-Chi Kuo, he earned having a phone named after him.

I very much doubt that I was the first to suggest it... but I had offered a speculation along these lines awhile back. It would be vaguely amusing to me if the latest version of this rumor turns out to be accurate.

That said: it obviously still won't satisfy small phone fans. I keep wondering if perhaps Apple has been holding off on releasing an edge-to-edge phone in the same form factor as the 5/SE, due to the perception of the parts cost for such a device being too high to attract an adequate customer base. (Never mind the havoc that would reap on their product naming schemes!)

True, but this way they will have a device with actually decent specs for an affordable price for people not willing to spend 1000$ or even 700$. I mean, a 400$ phone with the fastest mobile processor available and a very capable camera? That's an amazing deal that rivals the Chinese "flagship killer" phones.

I don't get why anyone would be interested in this 5 times warmed up old design. In 2020! You could have bought this years ago. And please don't tell me anyone needs an A13 cheap. It's a cellphone, not a Macbook

Because the SE is the right size, if in fact it is an SE. If it is a screwed up 8, then I agree.

I think by releasing the iPhone X, XS, and 11, they kind of indicated that they were going to continue as normal with their numbers. I’d be very surprised if they went back to 9. Kind of like if Microsoft suddenly released Windows 9.
