i would liken a virus (a virus that is a piece of RNA; which is just a piece of information with pre-coded instructions) to being "live", but not "alive".
its like a bomb that is set to go off if certain conditions are met (time, touch, etc). those are the bomb's instructions to "do something".
that's why we can say a bomb is a "live bomb". but not "alive".
the preprogrammed instruction set of a virus is to "latch onto something living, and replicate". its "live", but not "alive".
a bomb might be "live" for virtually forever, waiting to fulfil its instructions, what it was intended to do.
it seems any virus is "live" for only a certain amount of time however. this new corona virus for up to 72 hours or so, depending on what surface it is on. there are some other virus that are "live" waiting to fulfil their instruction set for up to two years.
