I really hope they equip it with 6GB of RAM, but they'll likely keep it at 4GB. I have a 2020 SE and the 3GB RAM is the only limitation the phone has, so 4GB for another 2 or 3 years is not really an upgrade.

Personally I just want an iPhone with Touch ID. The camera is good enough for my use. I don't need a 120Hz OLED screen either. The processor in the current SE is fast enough for the next few years, it's just the RAM that's limiting.
One of the earlier rumors is that it’ll be limited to 3GB of RAM and that the one after will go up to 4GB.

Im still on an iPhone 6s Plus and it currently does everything I need. I’d just like more RAM so apps and webpages don’t have to keep refreshing whenever I switch between them. A more efficient processor would be nice so the battery can last longer and not heat up the phone. Other than that, I’m good. All the bells and whistles of the new phones don’t do it for me anymore.

I personally do NOT know why Apple is producing this one, & NOT a 5.5" version in a slimmed-down chassis !

I used a 7+ for two plus years, & loved it, ALOT ... did think it was alittle too big & alittle too heavy, but Apple could easily resolve both of those concerns with an updated chassis !

Had a 6s before that, & thought it was just alittle too small.

Would love to see what I'm proposing with just One Back Camera, with the same Sony IMX703 1.9um image sensor as in the 13 Pro & 13 Pro Max !

IMO, it would be Apple's Best-Selling iPhone of ALL time, BY far !

Tim & his team think they know what they're doing, but they really don't !

They have succeeded because of a Lack of (viable) Competition !

They "may" actually know that by now.

And, for some UN-known reason, Google hasn't caught on ! ... I consider Google to be extremely slow on the draw !

And BTW, IMO, TouchID is the single best feature that has ever been Dropped in ANY smartphone !

edit-PS: My iPhone SE 2nd Gen still works smooth as hell and it's barely 2 years old, and most of the times, can't justify to upgrade in case I really can't stand with an old device for serious laggy reasons, but the 5G compatibility this time, is really tempting. What would you do?
I am still on the iPhone SE 1st gen and is still rock solid and smooth as hell. But with the 5G and all the other upgrades it is definitely time to upgrade. I just wished they would get rid of some of the big bezel so we could get more screen real estate like that iPhone mini.

A “trial production” makes it sound that there is something new to try, yet according to all the rumours it will be just another iPhone based on a very tried and tested design from iPhone 6-8. ??‍♂️

In your case yes, definitely upgrade, but I can feel you, my iPhone 6 was working pretty well on 2020 (and it still works, it's my secondary line) though battery was really not holding that much and 2014 cameras were starting to lack some definition, that's when I decided to switch to the first-baked SE 2nd Gen, cause all I wanted was an "update" rather than an "upgrade"

This time I want the same, but I have to see first what the improvements are cause just for 5G it's hard to justify, since I don't use huge amounts of data while on route, though some more screen would be nice, I can't see Apple giving us that on the SE if the "Mini" is still on stock (and from my personal point of view, I won't like it if that implies losing 'Touch ID')

More probable outcomes: updated WiFi, BT (and other usual suspects) CPU, 5G and cameras. I'd love some more battery, but I think is going to be a no-go as your screen wish.

Apple will never design a new chassis for the SE. They will borrow from the parts bin just as they have in the past. That means that if they want to keep Touch ID, then the iPhone 8 chassis is what you’ll get. Personally I think they should use the iPhone X or iPhone 11 chassis and be done with Touch ID.
For me, the whole point of the SE is Touch ID. I do think they will get rid of it. That is what makes it a "special edition."

I’m still on a 6s. The battery sucks. Might have to pay to get it replaced a second time. I would’ve upgraded to a new phone, but they still left out TouchID. I want nothing to do with FaceID. TouchID is way more convenient for my usage.

My girlfriend was considering an iPhone SE with a 12-months-free Mint Mobile contract a day ago; that’s a first for her (as a Motorola Droid user, she previously said she didn’t want iPhones, but she was considering the integration with her MacBook Pro and iMessage).

She then found out about the lack of a headphone jack, and the lousy battery, and said “no”.

I personally think the headphone jack issue is negligible, but she didn’t want an adapter or third-party replacement cable for her headphones (which actually has a socket on the headphones for this purpose). The poor battery, though... I fully agree that’s a PITA, especially after living with my 6s its lame batteries.

Your play, Apple. ??‍♂️

This would be an instant buy for me
Before I got the 12 Mini I'd say the same, but now I'm spoiled by having the display, processor and cameras of a full-size iPhone in a more holdable and pocketable form factor. The 13 Mini has a comparable camera to the 12 Pro and is smaller than the SE. Hard to go back to a "budget" phone after that.

I think they should keep the 2020 SE and drop the price to $299, and sell the new 2022 SE for the current price of $399.
I'm saying this because in a lot of countries, the SE 2020 sells for $450-600 USD due to taxes, import duties, etc. As a example, in Canada the SE sells for $569 CAD. So by dropping the price to $299 would make the SE more affordable for a lot of countries. It would be around $429-$449 CAD, which it would make Android users likely to switch.

I must recognize that it was also tough for me to get rid off the jack when switching from the 6 to the SE 2nd Gen, I've never been a fan of wireless audio (just using it on the iPhone and sometimes on MBP for convenience) ... so I can understand your GF, but at the end if you listen to streaming music, even on high quality, differences are quite negligible, at least for me and speaking as an amateur audiophile.

That will be great with 5G,
and if with magsafe charging, battery life like 13 mini.

The SE should really adopt the Mini's design, the iPhone 6 design is way out of date, Apple's really neglecting it now.
The iPhone SE checks four boxes for the average consumer:
  • Pocket-ability
  • One-handed operation
  • Touch ID/Physical home button, which some folks prefer
  • Low price ($399, but I bought 4 new SEs at launch in 2020 for $200 each on sale at WalMart)
The Mini doesn't check the last two boxes. It seems very unlikely to me that Apple can sell an SE (with 5G capability, A15 chip, and upgraded camera) in the Mini's form factor for $399. That's $300 less than the current Mini with the same chipset. Not going to happen.

If you’re handy, you can replace the 6s battery pretty easily/cheap with the iFixit replacement kit. My partner’s 6s was having tons of random shutdowns due to the cold and the ancient battery, but after ~40 minutes of work a new battery was in and it lasts all day with moderate use now!

Planning to do the same on my first-gen SE soon too.

Still rockin' an iPhone SE *first* edition. Works like a charm. Fast, great battery life, and handles well everything I use it for. Not sure what would ever make me upgrade it.

For photography, I have a couple of wonderful, inexpensive Canon digital cameras that do better than even a high-end iPhone. I use my iPhone for quick snapshots, but if I want low-light, birds, night sky and astrophotography, or fast action photos, I reach for one of the Canons.

For web browsing, such as reading Macrumors, it's much nicer to do it on an iPad. Much better views, and easier on the eyes.

By the way, one person's “outdated look” is another person's “classic look”.

People's needs vary. So, sweeping generalizations about what's good or bad, usable or not, adequate or inadequate, etc. depend on use cases.

Plus, this is all rumor, for now. Who knows what they’re actually going to release? …

I'm still waiting for an Apple flip phone — not a fold out phone with a seamless display but, literally, one with two screens, with built-in case. Top-bottom flip, it could be a Star Trek communicator.

“Beam me, up Scotty!”

De gustibus non est disputandum!

Me too. What version of iOS are you running? I don't think it's fast, rather it's acceptable. Sometimes it takes a second or so for an app to load for the first time. I also get app crashes more often that I would like, I would say about once every few days. Also, battery life is pretty bad. Mine is showing 84% of capacity and I think I go through 2 cycles a day.

Assuming the rumors are correct about it being similar to the SE 2, the SE 3 might be the phone I end up upgrading to.
