You're right, it's a wish, remember the SE started with the 5 / 5S design which was the last small iPhone before the 6, 6+, and forward took to ever larger footprints. Until the Mini that is. In a sense, those of us who preferred smaller, more pocketable phones, saw on the initial SE an attractive alternative.

I understand the idea is exactly not to sell you a current desgin, but, there's a part of your statement were I disagree. The SE cannot be so much out of date design wise that it looks completely outclassed by similarly priced but up-to-date designed Android's. Because there's a point where even if it's an iPhone, with the Apple logo in it and everything, the benefits a modern SoC and the Apple brand might bring, will not make up for a phone that looks from 10 years ago.

IMHO, the tipping point where this design is bringing the whole $399 proposition down has been reached. So maybe time to bring it to iPhone XR design, or as, you mentioned, iPhone 11. Due to the SE being in a 2-3 year update cycle, this means Apple will keep trying to sell you the iPhone 6 design, for $400, well into 2023.
"The SE cannot be so much out of date design wise that it looks completely outclassed by similarly priced but up-to-date designed Android's"

It can, and it does, and sells them in droves. Because it has the lastest iPhone processor, the latest iOS, and a reasonably up to date camera, and that works better than any Android for a lot of people.

Yes indeed, those similarly priced Android phones may look more modern, some with all screen designs, but the corresponding 'out of date design' Iphone SE will completely out class said Android phone in terms of Performance and also take better pictures, even with just one camera lens.

Before I got the 12 Mini I'd say the same, but now I'm spoiled by having the display, processor and cameras of a full-size iPhone in a more holdable and pocketable form factor. The 13 Mini has a comparable camera to the 12 Pro and is smaller than the SE. Hard to go back to a "budget" phone after that.
The post that I was quoting was asking for the new SE to be in the 12 mini Form factor. If it is true that the iPhone 14 will not have a mini version, a new SE in the 12 Mini Size is possible. I just bought my first iPhone since the iPhone 4s, I picked up a reconditioned iPhone 12 from my cell provider for 24$ on Black friday. The phone is great but it is too big and heavy IMO, I prefer the feel of my Samsung S10e. A new iPhone SE in 12 mini Size would be an instant buy.

As to my 2016 iPhone SE… it's on 14.8.1. Battery health is 95%. No lags in opening apps or using them. Battery lasts hours and hours. Works fine for Car Play and navigation. Great with podcasts.

Only problem there is the lame Apple Podcasts app. For example, when I delete a podcast, it should vanish. Instead, it’s screen sits there as if the deletion hadn't worked. It also often fails to update podcasts and the interface symbols are confusing and seem to contradict the general GUI of iOS. But none of that is the phone's fault!

Hard justifying an upgrade when it works so well!

All these people are saying how the iPhone is outdated and irrelevant. Yet it clearly is a favourite among so many and people love it why are half of you guys asking to have it axed and replaced by a mini ?

Me too. What version of iOS are you running? I don't think it's fast, rather it's acceptable. Sometimes it takes a second or so for an app to load for the first time. I also get app crashes more often that I would like, I would say about once every few days. Also, battery life is pretty bad. Mine is showing 84% of capacity and I think I go through 2 cycles a day.

Assuming the rumors are correct about it being similar to the SE 2, the SE 3 might be the phone I end up upgrading to.

SE version 2017 (128GB) on iOS 15.2 and it runs rather smooth, but at some moments it can be unresponsive. And it has, like some other models the bug where suddenly the touch screen becomes unresponsive (quick lock, unlock only helps).
Had the battery replaced this year at the Apple Store and directly after the SE ran like it was new. Very fast and smooth, as if it was in its default state without any extra apps installed. The unresponsive touchscreen bug seemed resolved. It took a couple of weeks and it slowed down to the normal level and the touchscreen bug came back.

We'll see what Apple shows us in a couple of months, if there is indeed a new SE. If it does include touchID, acceptable size and has dual SIM (incl eSIM) it might be a good replacement.

Trial production of the third-generation iPhone SE is set to get underway in the near future as Apple's suppliers and supply chain increase preparation for mass production of the new handset ahead of a launch reportedly set for early next year.

MyDrivers reports today that trial production, a stage in the supply chain ahead of when the device is mass produced, is set to start soon, according to sources in the upstream supply chain, hinting that the launch of the new iPhone is approaching. The new iPhone SE is reportedly on track to be released in the first quarter of 2022, towards the end of March.

The new third-generation iPhone SE is expected to continue with the same design featuring a physical Home button that includes Touch ID. The screen size is set to remain unchanged at 4.7-inches but will feature a faster A15 chip and improved camera capabilities.

The iPhone SE is a popular choice for customers looking for a smaller and more compact iPhone. Ahead of when Apple is expected to abandon the 5.4-inch "iPhone mini" in the 2022 iPhone series, the iPhone SE will likely play an increasingly more critical role in the iPhone lineup. The current iPhone SE starts at $399 and Apple's expected to keep the same price for the upcoming model.
