Apple plans to update the iPhone SE, its 4.7-inch entry-level iPhone, with an updated A14 Bionic processor from the iPhone 12 series in the first half of next year, according to a report from DigiTimes.

DigiTimes' report follows in the footsteps of reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reported last month the iPhone SE would receive an updated processor and 5G capabilities in the first half of 2022. Kuo says the new iPhone SE, which has marketed well for customers looking for smaller handsets, will be the "cheapest 5G iPhone ever" and is hoped to bolster Apple's position in the increasingly competitive 5G market.

The iPhone SE was originally released in March of 2016 as a small entry-level iPhone to replace the iPhone 5S, released three years earlier. Apple updated the iPhone for the first time in April of last year with the A13 Bionic processor borrowed from the iPhone 11, a larger screen, a new design, and improved cameras. According to reports, the upcoming iPhone SE 3 will sport fewer changes, featuring only the improved A14 Bionic processor and 5G.

The iPhone SE is the only iPhone within Apple's current lineup that features a Touch ID sensor and a Home Button, and that design will continue with the iPhone SE 3 next year, according to DigiTimes and Ming-Chi Kuo. Looking further out, Apple is reportedly planning to redesign the iPhone SE with a punch-hole screen design rather than a notch in 2023.

The SE was a big seller, so no surprises from another “maybe in few months Apple will release _____”

All they have to do is bring the Mini price down to SE and they have a winner.

They could use that design eventually, when the Mini is discontinued and they moved on to a new design.

Can't really do it now, because the Mini is the same phone as the "normal" 12/13, just smaller. Hard to justify the higher price of the 12/13 afterwards.

I wish they would tweak the design of the SE slightly. Maybe reduce the bezels a little. I guess that would probably defeat the purpose of the device and make it too expensive though.

The iPhone 12 Mini will be the new SE. This is logical, as this is the Model that will be discontinued and the smaller form-factor has the public perception to be cheaper. This is why it has poor sales as a flagship despite being loved by all the reviewers.

No. The mini has faceid, SE touchid. Don't want faceid, and obviously, quite a few others don't either.
Keeping touchid is keeping at least me as a customer.
Maybe in your case, but I think the biggest reason the SE is popular is the great price + newest chip... I highly doubt most people would mind if the SE got an updated design too.

Just use the Mini but stick hole punch camera on and touch ID on the power button, I'd drop my 12 pro for that in a flash because the notch and face ID is pointless when Touch ID is just as good.

Using the 2014 design in 2022 will be utterly disgusting when $200 OLED phones have hardly any bezels.

Classic Tim.

I dislike Apple's cash grabbing tactics as much as you do (e.g. remove upgradeability from the mac and charge hundreds for an otherwise 50 EUR/USD RAM or SSD upgrade), but I can't fault them on the SE concept.

A classic (timeless?) and proven design, that's cheap to produce, combined with a recent SoC inside, sold at an affordable (to Apple standards) price point.

What a pointless update to the SE model, 5G is still in it’s infancy and what could possibly go wrong putting 5G in a phone with a very small battery for today’s standards? As the owner of one myself it’s struggling to get through the day as it is! Also, it would be the second time Apple didn’t put their then latest chip in a smartphone (as this will come out when the A15 chip is out in the iPhone 13 models), they did this with the 5C, and that phone for Apple standards was a disaster.

They would have been better off updating the XR to an SE 3 model with the A14 and 5G, at least that phone has a decent sized battery and it is already at an ideal price of £499 to be released as an SE plus/max model.

For me the SE3 is the perfect device cant wait for it.
LCD screen no burn in when letting disolay on like me :)
Touch ID and fast energie saving 5nm A14
The remaining question now is the SE3 with U1 chip to boost airtag sales or again without it...

They will have to put in a larger battery to cater for 5G, otherwise the current 1821 mh will drain very within half a day. Maybe they will put in a more efficient 5G modem. Also it don't make sense to get a A14 chip if released early 2022, as the SE’s before always got the most up to date chip so maybe the article is wrong and it does get an A15? Anyway whatever the specs ill definitely be getting one.
