What would the “E” stand for though?

The “SE” stands for Special Edition. (Although I don’t think it’s ever been marketed as “Special Edition”, that’s at least been confirmed by Apple execs.)

So… would the “E” just stand for “Edition”? The “iPhone 16 Edition”?

Maybe it would stand for “Entry”? (As in an entry model.)
I say SE stands for Stripped-down Edition since it has none of the features from the main product line (e.g. amount of memory; higher storage capacity; as many camera lenses; etc)

For some reason it sounds like a cheap phone. Even SE feels more premium
It's Phil Schiller style car naming nomenclature - 16E (Economy?) sounds even more budget than SE which at least can stand for 'Special Edition'.

If the 16SE price drifts a big further north it could eat up the 15 when the 16 comes down in price come September.

Bear in mind that we've not heard anything about about an SE Plus but rationalising the line to include the following in September:

16SE, 16, and then 17, 17 Air* and 17 Pro

Remember the rumour about the 17 Air coming could mean the lines are about to get squeezed

Regardless of what it is called it is going in the wrong direction. It needs to be smaller, not bigger.

While the screen on the iPhone 16E (aka 14) is significantly bigger, the body of the phone is only a little larger than the SE.

Height: 0.33in (8.3mm) taller
Width: 0.16in (4.2mm) wider

iPhone SE
  • Height : 5.45 in (138.4 mm)
  • Width: 2.65 in (67.3 mm)
  • Screen: 4.7 in (120 mm)

iPhone 14
  • Height : 5.78 in (146.7 mm)
  • Width: 2.81 in (71.5 mm)
  • Screen: 6.1 in (155 mm)

I respectfully disagree. I want iPhone go bigger.

Regular iPhone should be Pro Max size, Pro Max needs to be at least 7.2 inch. iPhone Pro Ultra should be 7.5 inch and iPad mini need to gain phone functionality

Apple gave you two chances to make the form factor successful, and spoiler alert, it wasn’t a successful product!
And when Apple pivoted and went up in size with the "Plus" versions, how did that turn out?

I would respectfully leave the Apple ecosystem if the phones were that size. Those are unacceptably big for light users, like myself.

Not everyone uses their phone for everything, and not everyone wants to carry such a device.

As I said earlier...I don't watch video on my phone, at all, I don't use social media, and I don't play games. Why would I need or want a 7" screen?

Legit. Another "SE" would just make it a pool of confusion with what's available.

I agree. If Apple execs did state that SE means Special Edition, then they are even dimmer than I thought. Special Edition usually denotes a version of a product which has additional features, not less features as the iPhone SE does.

I imagine the “Special Edition” means “Manager’s Special Edition” iPhone to use up older iPhone parts! 😝

Seriously, just use an iPad. There are dozens of phone apps you can add to an iPad.

For someone, like me, who doesn't consume video (in any form) on their phone, play games, or use social media, there is no need for a bigger screen. I barely even use the web on my phone.

A smaller phone would be nice and my pro is on the high-end of what's comfortable. Considering I've had the SE issued to me twice as a company phone, I'm not what a big screen would be useful for, other than reusing iPhone 14 parts.

Exactly. When I'm out and about I'm not playing games, or watching video or doing things that would benefit from a larger screen. Quite the contrary as I'm active I benefit from using a smaller device that is lighter and easier to use one handed. When I'm home I use my iPads or my Macs.

What did iPhone XR stand for? It doesn’t have to mean anything as long as marketing agrees with it.

In terms of dating the phone with a number, the A-series chip already dates it, not to mention the notch and single rear camera. Nobody is getting fooled right now thinking SE3 is a 2024 iPhone.

No way will it be called 16E. Since it’s the entry level phone that sticks around for years adding a number to the name makes no sense.

iPhone 14 and 15 at the Apple Store say hello. The 16E gets dated regardless of whether there’s a number due to the feature set.

I think it stands for “economy” like economy class in airplanes.

On the other hand when they’re renaming it to 16e, I expect they also give it a price increase 😬.

16E, 16, 16 pro.

What’s the price difference on current 16 and 16 pro? $ 199 dollars

So the “new” iPhone E will probably come in at $ 499

An increase of $ 75

Maybe even $ 599 knowing Apple 😅

iPhone 24e would be better if based on last year’s tech. That would differ from the iPhones 25 that come in September/October.

iOS should be 24 for the iPhone 24e b side 2025 iOS is not launched.

The fall iOS and macOS should be iOS 25 and macOS should be macOS 25.

The current numbering system for products and software is outmoded, ununified and confusing.

Current system makes documentation and explantations so much harder for the typical user and has reached a similar point for all but hard core users.

Just like modernizing Mac OS-X whatever to macOS whatever was a step forward, getting all product and software names onto a calendar year basis would eliminate all the nonsense of generations and crazy long footnotes trying to list up all the exceptions or inclusions.

Time to improve it.

Marketing is the likely hold up but if they realized the calendar based model year would put a psychological pressure on customers to up grade as they realized their phones were aging (similar customers would be more sympathetic to aging battery issues if they could quickly relate to a calendar based name (even though they might have for example bought their iPhone 22 new in 2024).

I wonder if it will get WiFi 7 or 6E för 6ghz WiFi
No WiFi 7 and a crippled 5g version if they introduce it with Apple’s in-house modem that tries to compete with Qualcomm.

It’s interesting to see what Qualcomm is able to do with their snapdragon and X elite chips. Because as the numbers are what they predict, they will beat every M-series of chips Apple is releasing.

I always saw SE as “S-extension” as an Apple take on Intel’s tick tock product roadmap, where apples S year phone was a step forward, and the SE is a step extension outside of the regular model years to keep component capacity filled as sales of the fall releases decline.

I still stand by the idea that Apple released the 12 mini at the worst time possible for people who wanted it - less than 6 months after the 2020 SE came out. By then, people that wanted a smaller phone went with the SE, and then the mini came out and they just got a new phone, so why would they buy another one that quickly? Then the 13 mini was only one year later, and by the time people with a 2nd gen SE wanted to upgrade, it was gone.
