So what's the point in buying the iPhone 16 when you can get the iPhone SE which is mostly the same and way cheaper?

Two months ago I bought my grandpa an iPhone SE on my T-Mobile plan and it was only $200. It's great for him.

I love apple, but I don't get some things.
I find the fact they're selling a 60fps device at close to 1000$ pretty ridiculous.
It’s becoming harder and harder to defend their decisions lately. It simply comes across like corporate greed. I find purchasing their mobile products more and more unappealing.

Yes, this is an interesting one. The EU law stipulates that all smartphones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU must be equipped with a USB-C charging port by the end of 2024. Technically this means that they cannot sell any iPhone or iPad without a USB-C port in the EU from 1 Jan 2025.
There are usually some leeway for existing stocks. And considering the article is mentioning production ramping up soon, they _could_ be also be trying to stock some early models with lightning ports instead of the desired USB-C. But I agree it is more likely they might just put an adaptor and call it a day until the EU commission fine them. In either case we're making an assumption they don't have the USB-C connector already integrated for cost reasons, which I find personally doubtful since the iPad is already equipped with it.

Any new iPhone models released from now on will be coming with a USB-C ports, that’s a given. I don’t see Apple retooling the old models, however, so either they continue selling them with an adapter or take them off the shelves altogether.

The SE sounds like an amazing deal if this all pans out. Quite a leap from the current SE3 that looks like a joke next to the competition. With OLED and an A18 for Apple Intelligence, I don't think I'd even feel like I'm missing much from the base 16, since you have to jump to the more expensive Pro for the zoom lens and ProMotion. I wouldn't miss the ultrawide that much.

What am I missing?

Still ridiculous that the most expensive phone and least expensive phone in apple’s lineup will have the same amount of RAM.

That's how it was when the original iPhone SE launched. The $399 to $499 SE had the same RAM (2GB) as the $749 to $949 6S Plus. They also all had the same A9 chip. Size and HD display were the main differences, in addition to price.

There are rumors that 2025 samsung oleds will be pwm free

I have very little hope for this to actually happen. Some of their current laptops with OLED displays are certified flicker free, but that certification means they can't have any flicker up to 3000 Hz. I'm not sure that's fast enough for PWM sensitive people.

That makes sense….unfortunately inherently it has more grain since the PPI is much lower than the iPhone which hides it.
The iPad Pro OLED screens are 264ppi vs 460ppi for the iPhone 15p, but the viewing distances are different. The phone is used very close to the eyes, whereas the iPad is more likely to be used further way. The LCD iPad Air is also 264ppi so there is specific OLED compromize. The MacBook Air is expected to be used a little further out yet and it has a 224ppi. it’s all about the subtended angle. The closer to your eye, the higher ppi you need. I can tell you while typing on an iPad Pro with the dual-layer OLED, there is no perceivable grain or aliasing.

I could see them keeping the 13 as the SE going forward. Drop in a newer chip and ship it. Let economies of scale and a mature manufacturing process bring the cost down.

Or water it down some other way. Plastic back, anyone?
