I like to use the ever improving cameras that take high resolution shots, or the live photos, or videos and also install some apps and music. Images alone, you can drain that 16gb to nothing considering the OS eats a fair chunk of that 16GB out the box. Many reasons why 16GB is no longer acceptable. If you still don't believe it, then watch Apple get rid of 16GB in September proving the fact. They are just the last to do so.
Not clear why you're telling me your life story, I didn't agree to be your biographer.

If they'd ramped up production and advertised it even a little bit (I have yet to see a single ad for the SE in any medium), they may have stemmed their slowing iPhone sales growth problem for another year. But, alas, they seem to have released it, hoping nobody would notice.

When they released it with the 6S specs (sans- Force Touch), I was pleasantly surprised. I'd been hoping for a 4" iPhone with current specs, but had little faith Apple would deliver. I was even more surprised when they announced the price. I have a lot of friends who still use a 5 or 5s, and they didn't want the bigger 6. A month after it was released, none of my friends who own those 4" iPhones had any idea there was a new 4" iPhone, or that there was a new iPhone that was so much cheaper than usual.

I don't expect we'll see a 4" iPhone 7 this fall. But Apple really needs to bring the 4" form factor into their standard flagship lineup by the fall of 2017. There's no reason not to have 3 different sizes of phones that are otherwise identical (save for the battery and camera, due to size constraints); and advertise it as such.

I agree with (almost) everything you've said. (and, boy, do I love my SE) But the issue isn't "4 inch screen". The issue is "5 inch x 2.3 inch handset". I wish the screen took up the full space of that dimension.
One day, I believe, it will.

The SE has the same processor as the 6s/6S+ and the same resolution rear camera.

I recently "downgraded" from a 6S+ to an SE as I had issues carrying it in lighter summer clothes and I realise I'd forgotten how nice a small phone can be: I'd got caught up on the bigger is better mantra and really thought I needed a massive phone with me all the time. The SE has been like a breath of fresh air and I'm loving the increased portability and one handed use :)

Plus there's a real headphone jack! And the on-off switch is on Top! Bonus Points! And my previous Otter cases and screen protectors all fit. Easiest upgrade I've ever had.

"first year-over-year decline in iPhone sales since 2003"

Given the iPhone was released in 2007, that is an odd stat.

If you read it again 'the first year-over-year decline in revenue since 2003 and first ever year-over-year decline in iPhone sales.'

The decline since 03 is on revenue, which would be on the whole company not iPhone. The next part mentions it being the first declined on iPhone, which would be since 07.

Got my in-laws set up with two 64 GB iPhone SE's a week ago. They were upgrading from 10 year old Nokia bricks, because AT&T sent them a letter saying that those phones would no longer be able to connect to the network as of the end of the summer.

My biggest regret is not getting them iPhones with bigger screens. Their hands aren't steady... they tremble a lot and really struggle with entering passwords on the small screens. I'm hopeful that TouchID will reduce how much they need to enter passwords, but the initial setup process was very difficult for them.

I wonder... is there some super cheap keyboard that I can buy for them for just entering their passwords when that's necessary? Used is fine... I figure they can share it.

Do they even need a password? I don't use one, I find it too annoying having to put it in all the time. Sure, I don't really want someone snooping through my stuff if I lose my phone. But if someone honest finds it, it means they can ring my friends and I get my phone back quick. If a thief finds it, then it's going to get cracked anyway.

I still use my 4S. The main feature is that I can still run iOS 6.1.3. Speaking as a software developer, the vast majority of apps do not actually "require" a newer version of iOS, it's just that Apple makes it very difficult for developers to make their app backward compatible. I'd like to upgrade, but I can't justify it the way Apple is behaving.

I know exactly what you mean... I picked up an old 5c not long ago, after having owned an iPhone 6 for over a year, and it just felt amazing in my hand! The perfect size! I think Apple really hit the sweet spot with 4".

The rise in 16gb sales are from existing owners that want a second 6/6s for Periscope, Snapchat, Live video'ing, Pokemon, etc... I know a couple people who picked up a 6s just for those reasons. They're also great phones for graduation gifts

I ordered 32gb SE, still had 3 week wait months after launch, some 16gb models was available so many would of bought the 16gb instead. I cancelled my order and bought the 6S instead, and I'm glad I did, its very nice, and I prefer the design over the SE as well.

Yeah they seriously screwed the release of the SE.
I got bored of waiting and stuck with my 5 until I was tempted away by the One+ 3 (which is a damn nice phone).
If the 7 is as bad as it's looking then I'll snap up an SE at some point and hopefully save a few quid.

People buy 16gb of course, but because it's 100 bucks cheaper, nothing more, and this ends up worsening the famous user experience for a lot of people, and that ends up worsening Apple's reputation. Nobody is going to complain because it has too much space people, you look like you're out of touch with reality.

I love my SE, and the cost was not out of this world as well. I wonder if Apple will raise the price on the next iteration since it is eating into Apple's other higher priced models.

You need to enter your email password, your bank password, and your Apple ID password when setting the phone up. Each one was like pulling teeth. They'll never have to enter the email password again so long as they never change it, but the Apple ID password has to be entered after each time you reboot the phone and want to download an app. The bank app doesn't save the password or allow Touch ID, so that'll be a terrible experience every time they want to check their bank info.

I upgraded from my 16gig 5S to a 64gig SE.... I just honestly don't like big phones, so when they announced it, I knew I was going to jump on it.

Same here, as did my wife and two daughters. I think that the 4" form-factor is a better size for all of us. The price was NOT the driver, the one-handed use was.

Can't wait till the 2017 device comes out and I expect to see a one-handed device with the integrated touch ID and camera under the screen, effectively making the screen a 4.7" screen on a iPhone SE form-factor. The best of both worlds!

I traded up from an iPhone 6. I found the 6 too large and too heavy. I like the SE.
I did the same this week. I was debating back and forth because I had the 128GB iPhone 6 and that's what made me hesitate. Now that I'm using my 64GB SE, I couldn't be happier with the decision. Fits perfectly everywhere and the design is just classic and no more camera bump!

Why does anybody need more than 16gb? I'm genuinely curious to understand the usage model. I still have 5.8gb available on my 16gb iphone 5.

Why do they need more than 16GB? To store apps/data etc. Why are you even asking a question that has such an obvious answer?

Thanks to offline playlists which I find incredibly useful, Spotify uses 9.5GB on my phone and this will only increase. I have other apps which take up around 400-500MB each (MS Office for example). It's not an issue of course as that's why I purchased the 64GB model.

I can't believe 16GB phoes exist in 2016. 32GB should be the lowest.

it'll continue to exist while it's profitable for Apple and its the #1 seller. its a business decision and nothing to do with technology or providing the best product at this point.

I was reading that the cost of the chips for memory would roughly equal ~$10 difference to apple to provide a base storage of 32gb. but thats $10 less profit. they also like the upsell. The step from 16 to 32gb is extremely super profitable for them as almost the entire difference in price is profit.

Actually, when you buy in the volumes that Apple do, the cost is just a couple of $ difference between 16 & 32.

Thats the point I was trying to Make. the whole purpose of the 16gb model is an attempted upsell. the cost of the chips are so minor that providing a base 32gb would cost them pennies to provide. But, if almost everyone thinks that 32gb is enough, then they wont buy the 64gb model, which comes with a $100 extra cost. That is almost pure profit.
