I get it's a new budget iPhone release but as basically a parts bin model, a 3-year old iPhone 8 with updated internals, does the SE really truly deserve the huge amount of column inches it's getting? Even calling it a "special edition" is typical hyperbole. It's basically an incremental 8S or 9 if you're being generous. Yawn.
From my point of view, it does deserve the attention.

The price of telephones has been creeping up and up, and I for one have no intention of spending such amounts on a telephone. I would imagine there are a lot of people like me and this is a great indication from Apple that they know that people like me are out there.

The fact that it's been covered so much is not only helping Apple promote this new product but also informing users like me that Apple still makes a phone for us. God forbid we'd have to go to Android.

Different strokes for different folks.

I ordered mine through my carrier (like a fool) so I have to wait. Oh well. Hope all the people who have them already are happy!

It would look great if it were a white phone. The black front ruins it for me.

It’s an incredible value (for Apple). So in that sense it is newsworthy.

The “reviews” are absurd however. What is there to review? These parts have already been reviewed.

It drew a click and a few inches of commentary from you

I’ve criticized Tim Cook a lot on these boards, but I do really like how aggressive he’s getting with pricing lately. The MacBook Air hitting $999 again is comical. This phone at $399 is also pretty absurd. Even the 4K iMac is a really good value.

The fact that some markets still have those regulatory markings is whatever…it’s nice that Americans (along with others, just speaking from where I am) have had that “clean” look for a long time, however out-of-the-norm it’s made the version with markings look to us. (oh, those times when you realize something belongs in PRSI ;)…)
Either way. SE looks like a great phone if you’re not expecting a revolution, simply a thorough fine-tuning of what they’ve had with the 8 onwards.

My best friend has the original SE and is the exact stereotype that people here talk about all the time—someone who CLAMORS for a smaller phone and has held TIGHT to her SE since upgrading from a 5c. I had to force myself to keep my mouth shut about this phone when they announced it because I want her to get a new phone so bad, but she gets so annoyed with my Apple nerdery. And then…without any prompting on my part…she texts me, “no lie, the new SE is super exciting to me—pretty sure I’m gonna get one.” Now that’s obviously not gonna happen with everyone, but to put it simply, Apple is offering 11 Pro performance in all of the ways that matter to the kind of people who buy an SE—for the price of an SE. That’s amazing. Looking forward to the day my girl gets one.
Your friend's experience sounds somewhat like my own. 5c to original SE (wanted the small phone) to eventually warming to the idea of the larger phone and getting the new SE (should arrive today!)

Got mine today.... Anyone stuck at the iOS 13.4.1 update screen ... trying to set mine up and it’s been here for an hour

There's also this: there appears to be some consensus that this new SE would be attractive to people that have held out on purchasing an iPhone due to price, and perhaps to to people who have been holding on to the old SE for its size. These are people that have probably not purchased an iPhone in a few years. It's not a new market, but a less active one. How will they take the new SE?

Also, it's the first iPhone Apple has put out with Touch ID instead of Face ID in a couple of years. It's a throwback: how will users and the market react? Is there an untapped nostalgia for Touch ID? Or has Face ID (and the full screen) really put the older style to bed? I think there are some interesting things to be written about this new SE.

Yes they are

okay. Guess I was wrong never noticed it on the 11.

I liked that got rid of the iPhone name.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Yes they are (in Europe), they’re just smaller and less noticeable (especially on the white model).

Left is a red XR, right is a white 11.

Ah that is hard to see.

Based on your username these Aus models?

I don't get the criticisms for the SE.

SE doesn't mean "small edition". I'm sorry to everybody that thought they were going to bring back the old SE/5S/5 form factor, but that was never in the cards. And for those stuck on "small", the original SE basically took a previous smaller popular form factor and stuck better guts in it. This new SE is the same concept - it's taking a previous smaller popular form factor (yes, it is indeed popular) and sticking better guts in it. They would probably have to re-tool their manufacturing processes and facilities to make anything other than the 8's form factor, which adds to costs. They can still pump out the 8's form factor with ease.

It's a solid screen for most of the general population, it's a solid camera (some reviews and threads are showing it to be on par with the 11 in many scenarios except for night mode), it's an incredible processor with years of updates ahead, Wi-Fi 6 (future proofing), Gigabit LTE (somewhat future proofing), reviews have showed decent to solid battery life, 3gb of RAM (4 would be better, but 3 is still a solid bump and more than enough for most iPhone users), it reverts to a still-popular (and fast/secure) Touch ID. It's also in a smaller form factor than any of their current line-up.

And all at $399.

Is it for everybody? No. But this forum doesn't represent the general population. A lot of people still use 6S's, 7's, 8's, and don't want something bigger and don't want Face ID. This is the perfect upgrade for them (yes, even for users of the 8), keeping them on a familiar chassis while bumping up power and extending their upgrade life.

It should be on everything. I even have it on my Mac Mini. You can barely notice them. The fact that the background is white makes them pop even more. If there is a phone without it, maybe that phone is a grey import that was made for other markets.
They are on white iPhone 11 Pro, however I didn’t notice until I really looked. Barely noticeable

I'm very out of the loop, what's the return policy on these since the stores are (mostly) all closed? My original plan was to test drive the SE with the possibility of it replacing my beloved 6s but heading straight to the store on Day 13 if I wasn't over-the-moon impressed.

*Unlocked, paid-in-full phone since I think that matters in terms of returnability.

Oh, that’s awesome. I hope you enjoy it. The fact that the camera can do SO MUCH thanks to the A13 is mind boggling to me—post some pics from it if you can!

If I recall, Apple is allowing all products that are purchased in this timeframe to be returned as they regularly would be 14 days from the re-opening date of their stores. In other words, it’s indefinite right now. Don’t quote me on this though ahah, if someone else can corroborate that’d be awesome.

I feel bad for European consumers who have to put up with those ugly regulatory markings. And people often accuse them of using fake iPhones.

You know what’s even worse right here in the good old USA? Having to look at those damned labels on everything stating that the state of California has determined that whatever’s in there to be cancer causing. And I mean EVERYTHING!
