The previous SE was at least a generation behind the current flagship. The fact that this one is the same speed as the current flagship is really, really impressive.

I'm surprised by the recommendation to buy the higher-capacity one. With iCloud now able to offload photos and apps I'm not using, I see little reason to have a phone with massive capacity. I would buy the 64 GB version and it would do just fine.

Incidentally, I had my old SE replaced in December, and as part of the troubleshooting with my old phone, I set up the new one manually, instead of automatically porting all my apps over. The resulting digital minimalism has been amazing. I only load up stuff on my phone that I really need. I went from four screens packed full of apps to fewer than two.

Same here. I got the 1st gen SE with 64GB and still have 30GB available on it. Apps are offloaded right now and I have tens of thousands of photos and videos in iCloud Photo Library, iTunes Match now switched to Apple Music, bunches of documents and things in iCloud Drive and synced to iCloud documents on my Mac. I very much can’t justify buying 128GB just by comparing to my current usage.

Yeah I’m boring with no big games and other usage. I use my iPhone to get things done. 🙂 I also got 5th gen iPad mini, similar specs; 64GB and tied into all the iCloud bits above. Kinda funny to think that of each of the devices, I got the smallest-of-the-smallest of each. Hah. They probably hate that a little bit.

I would buy the “new” SE without a thought but I just can’t buy the same old thing again. I’ve been an iPhone user since 2010 but I’m slowly getting tired of it. My only hope is that the 12 will get that rumored iPhone 4/5 design.
iPhone 4/5 design? Sounds like you want the same old thing again after all.

I’ll switch back to a FaceID iPhone later on when I don’t have to wear a mask all the time. I like the longer screen and FaceID too, despite its quirks.

Why are people repeating this? Apple thought of this. Settings - FaceID - Alternate appearance

I don’t have a FaceID phone and I know this..

I didn’t mean older people in particular, just those who don’t give much thought to their smartphone when purchasing (4+ years after the last time) other than considering Android vs. iOS. It’s a much more non-techy casual demographic. That’s not a knock in any way, some people are interested in tech in general and tons of people don’t swim in that pond.

I myself am actively considering selling my 11 pro (I wanted the smallest phone possible for 4+ years coming from a 6s) and replacing it with an SE.
The 5.4” iPhone 12 will be even smaller 🙂

Folks used the same desktop and wall phones for 40 years - but a 4-year-old design is "so old"....what a bunch of ninnys... VW made the Beetle for most of last century but now classic time-tested design is "old" after a couple of years...Has everyone gone nuts?
Many people want change for the sake of change. The mindset is rampant here.

I’d rather they hit the camera bump on the head. And the sides while they’re at it; flatten those edges a la 1st gen SE. Then I’ll buy it.

i thought the bump was required, but on the se and 6s it wasn't really; the SE had no bump and used the same camera as the 6s.

It makes me think the bump was an artifact of the manufacturing process and the industry copied Apple for no reason.

Meanwhile, Unboxed Therapy is reviewing masks.

Recently he decided to write a letter begging asking Apple to send him review units. I just find it funny that he repeatedly states he doesn't care if Apple responds to his email or whether they send him devices for review. Yet he made a video on YouTube about it and even pinned it on his channel. I guess he feels left out that people are reviewing the iPad Pro, the Magic Keyboard and now the iPhone SE... and he has to go buy them and wait for delivery.

Anyways, the iPhone SE seems like a great device and sets a new bar for phones under $400. This is an easy phone to recommend to anyone who doesn't need the latest and is on a budget.
He must have done something to piss off Apple. Not surprising, he seems like a bit of an ass. Good luck to him, Apple tends to have somewhat of a long memory. They don’t tend to reward those they think have done them wrong.

The bump is there because of the physics of camera optics. As the iPhone got thinner and thinner, it got thinner than the camera needed to be to produce high quality photos.

It could be said that Apple might just keep the bump even if the phone gets thicker: if they do then the optics get better and we’re already used to it already.

I’m no fan of the bump otherwise, but I’ll be using a case anyway so it’s not really an issue. At least keeping the phone thinner mitigates the added size of the case!

It was the inane zeal for thinness, and rounded edges, then the pointless “curved glass edge” because it scored #NerdPoints. Camera lenses can only be but so small.. light is a fixed constant (Einstein defined it as ‘c’ after all. Heh.) but yeah, the bump irritates me so much I traded my 6 for the SE for that explicit reason. The 1st gen SE used the 5S thicker body so it was more roomy for lenses, thus laid flat.

The metal edges of that bump also get scratched bad, and it scratches the table when it’s moved across the surface. I got a scratch on my table from it.

It was so slippery to pick up, especially in NC winter climate when the air is dry and your hands are dry.. no juice to grip the device, no grab points, no leverage. I had to be soooo so careful with my 6. It felt so flimsy, too, like a saltine cracker. Felt like it was gonna break any day. Moronic design.

Given I had a 6 at the time, the SE was a double-plus upgrade for everything I needed and wanted (plus Apple Pay with TouchID and Watch support for my future AW I knew I’d get). It was perfect at the time. AND it is 4” Rose Gold; the only 4” phone in that color ever made. An instant antique. 😆 original 5 and 5S didn’t have that color.

I love my SE. irrationally-so 🤣 I’m seeking professional help for that...

Think this. Apple tried hard from iPhone 4-8 to keep iPhone look symmetrical especially front. Than Apple let go symmetry concept when introduced iPhone X with top notch and nothing similar at bottom.
So, Apple could have increased the screen towards top side giving more screen in the same iPhone 8 size frame by reducing thick top bezel like most android phones top part of screen. Bottom could not be reduced because of beloved Touch ID. This could have given 2020 SE new identity. Wasn't that difficult.

That would look awful and very off brand for Apple. Not in agreement at all, and clearly Apple's engineers and design team, or frankly the new reviewers as well, weren't either.

It's true you can set up an alternate apearance, but with a mask it kicks back a "Face Obstructed" error. Someone found an imperfect way to fool it, by wearing half the mask at a time, but it's not perfect and definitely not a deliberate feature.

Face ID technically shouldn't officially work with a mask anyway:
  • It may not recognize you if you don't always wear the same kind of mask.
  • Other people wearing the same mask may be able to unlock your phone. Since they're effectively wearing a part of your "shape."

I've read a couple of reviews, and it's interesting that a lot of them like the home button vs no home button.

From the UX point of view the home button/lack of home button seems to be a wash, in that there's a benefit to no button (screen size), but there's also more load associated with no button (more awkward).

The advantage with the home button, (in respect to the haptic home button for 7 and above), is it invokes actions quicker.

If you look at the iPhone 6s, (which was the last home button to support a ‘spring tensioner’), The iPhone 7 Haptic home button took all the issues with the spring loaded home button and made it better. Especially with the haptic feedback, I can see why the home button gained favorability when it graduated from the spring loaded home button from the 6S and below.

Think this.
Apple is only able to offer a phone this crazy cheap every 3-4 years or so by reusing EVERY SINGLE part that they possibly can, that’s already been in production for years & they have reached economies of scale with.... processor from the latest 2 phones, casings they’ve been making for many years now, etc.
The reason this phone can be cheaper whilst maintaining a profit margin is because there’s very little r&d to recoup, no new manufacturing techniques to work wrinkles out of, etc.
You're talking about new design, new tech, more r&d, etc...
What isn’t that difficult is seeing why they went their route, not yours.

Think this.

Apple is the biggest tech company on the planet. And this isn't "crazy cheap" at all - just cheap in Apple-world.
They could easily have mad a few changes to the design and still made this phone at this price point.

I think it's rather a very well thought out conservative design decision. They have stuck to a VERY recognizable design - tried and tested and it's not really a bad thing... If you want something more flashy/new/future looking they have that as well

Never really used the 6s for the camera, run a few apps, nothing major. This will sit a lot better upgrading from a 6s with a few quid back on the old phone (if they agree the value). Awaits battery life report, that will be the deal breaker for me. I am fed up of not getting through the day without a re charge on basic use.

Any news on the RAM?
Any update on the screen over iphone7 or 8?
I really need iphone 7 to SE comparison, and what I am going to miss from the iphone 11.

I was going to complain that the bezels look ugly large considering the newer slimmer/bezel-less phones then I realized you need it for touchID or have asymetirical bezels which will probably look uglier.

This phone is a real steal and I hope the sales shatter Apple expectations, the value to offer is amazing, I hope the message goes through we don't want notch and we don't want faceID. I am surprised they put in the latest chip I am only guessing its cheaper to produce more of the modern chip than keep the older ones around.

I have never imagined myself buying the lesser phone, always the greatest, but here we are. I don't need 3-camera phone and a notch that can graph facial features.

Could you guys tell me if the home button is like the old iPhone 6 or the newer Haptic button like iPhone 7?

Thanks!

ah that’s something Apple might should address then.

I sit, loungingly, corrected. (and I made up a new word!)
