Right here. I'm one of those people who wants a new 4-inch iPhone. And until one is released, I'll continue to use my iPhone 5s.
This is exactly the issue. Apple once again cheaping it out when they don't have to.

Apple has an insane access to resources yet (under Tim) continue to make 'spreadsheet decisions'.

Where is the product first focus Tim?

The SE is lazy and arrogant.

Where are all the people that wanted a new 4 inch iPhone?

(yes, its not exactly 'new', its a refined 5s).

We have to remember just what standards Apple is held to when it comes to thinking about what they're defining as 'lackluster', here. I think it's pretty clear that Apple is deliberately aiming at a certain segment of the market to get them to upgrade, but they're not presenting it as a flagship.

Meh, one weekend is not a trend, but if sales for this continue to be lackluster it will be the 3rd big miss for Apple next to the Apple Watch and iPad Pro Big edition, and 3 data points is a trend that in this case Apple can't afford to make repeatedly.

No, we've had this bullsh*t before with the same analysts, who claimed that the 5C was a flop. It wasn't. It sold great. The SE will sell well.

Even at $300 (at Walmart on contract) it's a tough sale if you already own a 6S. And I still believe that the majority of people upgrade iPhones in the first month of release. You can blame Apple for this.
If you already own a 6s, the SE is not meant for you. It's for all the people who have older phones and appreciate the smaller size and $250 cost savings.

"Economic" as opposed to "flagship". Apple has made no secret of the fact that this is an update of the 4" and is intended to swoon lovers of that form factor. At $399 American, it is also the cheapest phone Apple has ever sold.

You have a point in arguing that it is Apple's flagship 4" phone but it lacks too many key features of the 6s to be considered the flagship cellular product of the entire company.
Yeah..but I was just saying...flagship or not...a phone is a phone regardless of the price. They emphasized heavily during keynote..otherwise...they should have kept it silent update. just saying.

A participator of many is a master of none. It's been Apple's mantra since Steve returned to the company in '97.

Also, you can't expect Apple to make every single form factor that people a clamoring for either. It's basic marketing too. Why would you want a phone with a markup of, say, 100% to look more appealing to the consumer than a phone with a markup of 150%. Apple doesn't have a stockpile of money to not understand how this works. It's business and it sucks at times but you can't expect them to be a charity too. It is clear that the goal of this phone was to bring the cost of production down as low as possible. Even the chassis and screen can be made on the same production machinery as the 5S to they don't have to invest in more machinery for the factories. They are wayyyyyyyy more factors to this decision than many are recognizing. Be happy that they didn't leave the 4" form factor behind as most of us expected they would and appreciate they are going to give it at least one more update. You can't win them all.

Sorry... maybe I should have said "price category"

But "entry-level" and "flagship" are also categories.
Regardless of the price...is it not a phone? Just saying.

I'm starting to thinking having too many "categories" is not really good thing.

Tried to buy a SIM Free model, but none of the Apple Stores in my area have stock. Mid April is the estimate. So, I will buy one, but have to wait until there is one to buy.

A sucker born every minute, lol. this is why Apple makes billions of dollars! Low expectations from its customers nowadays...please fire their marketing team asap - but that won't happen because their marketing team obviously is working successfully at full throttle
The SE fully meets my expectations, just because they are not the same as yours doesn't make them "low." One could argue that a sucker is someone who pays $250 more for a phone for a few feature that may or may not be important to people.

You really believe that?

Then how is Apple able to sell so many phones during the other 11 months? :)

Regardless of the price... is it not a phone? Just saying.

STOP

I never said the iPhone SE was not a phone. Now you're just being combative and annoying ;)

Let me clarify even further (even though I shouldn't have to)

For years Apple has had three starting price-points for the iPhone: $450, $550, $650

Or... you could describe them with the following categories: entry-level, mid-range, flagship

So that's what I meant when I said "categories"

Apple's entry-level category used to be occupied by the two-year-old iPhone with two-year-old processors and cameras.

But now Apple's entry-level category is occupied by a heavily upgraded iPhone. And it's cheaper too!

To review: the iPhone SE is in the entry-level category. It is not in the mid-range or flagship categories. Make sense?

The only reason I replied to you in the first place was because you said someone buying the iPhone SE today will have a "rude awakening" in September when the "latest and greatest" iPhone 7 comes out.

I disagree.

If someone was really worried about buying the "latest and greatest"... they wouldn't be buying an iPhone from the the entry-level category anyway.

I laugh at the sentiment that if you have a 6s this phone is not for you. I've had pretty much every iPhone there is. Including a 6 plus, a 6 and a 6s. And you know what? I was ecstatic to give my 6s to my son (luckiest 8 year old ever) and pick up a SE. So it's probably not right to tell anyone it's not for them. And I'm a tech junkie so it's not like I don't know anything about phones.

It appears that demand exceeds what Apple expected, however many that was. I'm looking for a 64GB SE and there isn't one within drivable distance in NYC or NJ. I've checked out all variations of color. There are a few stores with a few 16GB SEs, but most appear completely sold out, at least around here. Pretty much by definition people looking to buy an SE are not looking for the newest latest thing (or they would have bought a 6S six months ago). But it's exactly what I want. Well, I would have liked 3D Touch and a 128GB option, but I'm also happy it's $250 less than a 6S.

Bolded: uh. no. If i was combative and annoying...I would have posted purple dinosaur looking barney with a bat if that was the case. Just saying. :)

Anyway back to the subject: You can disagree and that's fine. I can just do the same as well.

I understand what you meant by category. If new people came in to the store not knowing when the next iphone will fault...it's more likely they would buy the current "official" iphone. I mean...technically iphone 7 is not an official iphone as of it. Only rumors...so they can't wait that long, can they? Just saying.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit slow to begin with. It hasn't been advertised as heavily in the media as other iPhones are, so a lot of the potential customers may not even know about it yet.

I'm shocked that the most useless product unveiling ever produced lackluster sales. Can't wait to see the equally lackluster iPad sales.

Still not sure why they had a formal presentation for those products. Would've been better off just releasing them. Less of a hit to the contrived aura around Apple's product announcements.

I'm expecting price drops in September across the iPhone line by $100. We've already seen that the iPhone SE has room in its margins for a price drop. Apple will make up the margins hit as its software revenue continues to increase.

I predict not only will this price drop not happen, but Apple will create a new even higher priced tier with its "iPhone Pro."

Why would anyone buy a phone that has last year's technology, cheap (sort of) as it may be? I think it's highly likely that there will be a 4-inch 7 in September, leaving the lineup as 7+ (5.5"), 7 (4.7"), 7- (4") and 6S+, 6S, SE.
Not everyone is focused on trying to keep up with the Joneses, or caught up in the 'must have a new phone every time one is released' mindset.

Just because you wouldn't buy the new iPhone SE, that doesn't mean it is a useless product. Not everyone needs a phone with all the possible options. And as shocking as that thought is, many of those same people easily sleep at night not worrying that they don't have the supposed latest and greatest released phones for the next few months.

The last time you bought the latest iPhone release, it was already old technology. You just didn't know it at the time.

Although I am a bit of a narcissist, I'm going to admit to you that my purchasing decision alone did not lead to the "lackluster sales" headline.
