So it's really a second edition of the iPhone 8. Why didn't Apple just name it the iPhone 8se and save all the confusion with the original SE and this 8se?
There’s no confusion between this SE and the original 5se. And there won’t be any confusion in 2024 when Apple brings out the latest SE, based on the 5.4” iPhone 12/12S/13/13S, with an A17.

I'm guessing Apple feels the overwhelming majority of their customers are not confused by labels. And instead make purchase decisions based on price and features.
The 8se seems like a sore thumb. Why didn't Apple continue selling the prior generation at a cheaper price? This strategy of the 8se now seems like the marketing dept overdosed on something.

insane that the XR camera sensor is bigger but with the A13 ISP...vs A12 ISP... pictures turn out better on the SE

Yea as disappointing as it would be if it truly is a rebranded iPhone 8 sensor, it is very impressive to see how much better the images look out of the SE due to the new ISP

Apple, with their huge resources really could have put in more than a minimal effort, even for their cheapest phone.
Apple is clearly not doing their best for each product anymore. I guess this is the new Apple now.

Funny, pretty much all of the reviews out there are absolutely glowing over what a terrific value the new SE is.

Maybe you thought of some things they didn’t? You should be more specific.

This is actually impressive. This youtuber posted a comparison between iPhone SE, iPhone XR and iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE actually did better than the XR. The A13 really makes a difference even with an older sensor.

Just selling the iPhone 8 at $399 would have been lazy. Better to give it the SE treatment and upgrade the SoC to the current A13 (with 3GB of RAM). WiFi 6 is a nice touch.

$6-8/month for an iPhone that’ll be good for 4-6 years. That’s the whole point of making an SE.

Unambitious crap phone. Under screen fingerprint would have been a no brainer for intelligent not greedy people!

No snark, but do you understand why Apple was able to afford to start this phone at $399? It’s because they were able to reuse previous components. If they’re using new technology with a fingerPrint reader under the display, That cost would have to be passed on to the consumer, thus raising the price of the phone. The whole goal of the SE 2 is to keep it as relatively affordable as possible, and by your insinuation, it would be totally opposite. It’s obvious Apple knows exactly what they’re doing, versus someone like yourself that probably has no experience with segment pricing for a global phone across the world.

Wasn’t the iPhone 8 $449 before the new iPhone SE came out? Apple simultaneously lowered the price and greatly improved the photo, video and CPU performance. There are some nice bonuses too, such as WiFi 6 and better LTE band support. According to some testers such as CNET, the battery life is substantially better. Battery testing isn’t as straightforward as most other tests, so results will vary depending on how that testing is being done, and how it was done on the iPhone 8.

What, you’d rather they charge the same price for the 8 with the older chip?

I’m really not understanding this criticism. What’s so bad about offering an upgraded version for a lower price? Who cares what they call it?

If I needed a new phone I’d buy one today.

They are trying – they are trying to keep it cheap.

That means you don’t retool and redesign unless there are big benefits.

And while it is simple in principle to talk about “just make the battery bigger“, that may well affect not only battery costs (since they have already driven the cost Way down of the existing battery) but other things related to fit in the Design and manufacturing of the phone.

So yes, a bigger battery was entirely feasible and would have been very nice, but it also would’ve increased the cost.

And they cannot forget that that also would make it more of a competitor with their premium phones.

you only Show your Lack of Expertise in High quantity Production. A bigger battery costs almost nothing in design and production, just a slightly thicker body.

cheaper existing battery, can’t believe you really wrote that, 😂

Apple watches don’t have 3D Touch. They have force touch it’s a different and less sophisticated technology.
It's essentially the same, I've done so many apps for both systems to know. What I'm saying is I'm curious to see if they remove it off the watch all together. I can see them doing it.

So much wrong about this, but the bigger lack of understanding here is your use of random uppercase letters.

What do you mean? iPhone 8 has wireless charging.
But iphone 6/7 did not and those are the people they most want to see upgraded to stay in the ecosystem.

That would have been pretty amazing for them to put that on an SE device before putting it on a Pro model first though. Could they have done it? Oh i'm sure they could have found a way and only messed with the price by 25-50.00 retail but I think that would have had a ton of complaints from Pro users. Not that Apple really cares about complainers.. but it just wouldn't have looked good from a PR prospective.. though I agree it would have been quite cool to see them do it.

Then they’d have to redesign the phone. The whole point is to reuse the 8 design to keep it cheap.

They are also trying to sell more expensive phones. With the gains that are made in battery manufacturing, I think it would not have been too hard to add at least 10-15% extra battery capacity. Even that would have gone a long way.

Along with Gigabyte Class LTE, Express Transit with Power Reserve, Dual Sim (esim),3GB of Ram, higher screen brightness at 625 nits of brightness etc..all lacking in the iPhone 8. This iPhone SE 2020 edition is a steal for $399.

Astonishing some people still don't understand why an inexpensive entry level phone has fewer features than a much more expensive high-end phone.

But it's NEWer!!!! ;)
[automerge]1588010662[/automerge]
So when the first SE came out, it basically had the body of an older model (the 5/5s) and the guts of a more recent model (I think it matched many of the specs of the 6s, which it came out 6-ish months later).

I'm not sure what people were expecting? Old case, some new guts and a great price!!!
It's pretty much exactly what I was expecting.

I agree. I know people here will hate this but it wouldn't happen under Steve Jobs. Let's take iPods for example. Back in the day they didn't make different iPods just to lower the price to get to more people. Each type of an iPod served a little different use and they had completely different form factors. In many cases people ended up owning more than just a single iPod. For example, they had the classic with big storage and other with smaller size for running. They could've done it the Tim Cook's way but they chose to innovate. That is the Steve Jobs's way. iPhone SE 2020 is just a worse iPhone.

It's literally their minimalist phone. The could have kept the processor back a generation, but they didn't.

I guess I should ask, what exactly do you think it should have?
Maybe you're thinking of something in particular that I didn't notice...?

You probably don't realize this, but Li-ion pouch batteries expand in volume over the life of the battery. A larger battery will expand more. If you don't leave enough space, the result is Galaxy Note 7.

It isn't as simple as increasing the thickness of the battery because the 0.5mm 3D Touch layer was removed. If Apple increases the chassis height, everything including buttons and speakers need to be re-positioned. Not to mention radio testing of the updated chassis.
