Apple will not refresh the iPhone SE in the first half of 2017, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The lack of refresh comes as Apple attempts to maintain high margins on its high-end iPhone models, Kuo said in a new research note.

Kuo forecasts that total shipment volume of iPhones will decline in the first half of 2017 due to tepid demand in China, slow shipment volume of 4.7-inch iPhones and the lack of an iPhone SE refresh in the second quarter of the year. Kuo argues that shipment volume came in higher in the first half of 2016 due to "upbeat demand for the iPhone SE."

Instead, Kuo believes Apple will exert pressure on its iPhone component makers to drop prices in an effort to maintain its margins. He expects suppliers to begin price reductions on components in either November or December of this year.

However, Kuo notes that not all suppliers will cut prices. Most iPhone component makers, like those that make the device's panels, have weak bargaining positions with Apple due to fierce competition amongst suppliers. Some suppliers, like Samsung, are the main supplier of certain components for iPhones and have stronger bargaining positions than Apple. Kuo believes Samsung may even raise its prices. And finally, Kuo says there are a few suppliers like TSMC that are unlikely to be affected by Apple's attempt to maintain its margins.

Overall, Kuo forecasts that iPhone shipment volume will drop year-over-year in the second quarter of 2017, sitting between 35 to 40 million, less than last year's 40.4 million in the second quarter of 2016.

Apple introduced the iPhone SE in March 2016, packing in many of the iPhone 6s' features and component into a 4-inch frame similar to that of the iPhone 5s. It's unclear what kind of upgrade schedule Apple will adopt for the device, but it's internals are powerful enough to remain a capable phone for a couple of years.

Too bad - it's the best designed iPhone and only phone that is comfortable to hold without putting an ugly case on.

Still deal with hand pain on my 7 but I just live with it. Weighed the 7 against the SE but it's just too much of a downgrade in terms of internals.

I call the SE Steve's phone. Everything else is Tim's. And Steve's rules.

I plan to buy an SE this november. I hope there hasn't been any component quality reduction in, e.g. the NAND Flash, to be able to reduce the price on the 64GB version, which is the one I'll buy.

I hope to get a MLC Nand Flash, and a TSMC SoC.
Fingers crossed

"Apple attempts to maintain high margins"...that's the problem. How high of a margin do they need to maintain? They can't continue to expect to maintain high margins. The consumer electronics market does rise and fall and you need to be willing to ride those waves. If you attempt to maintain those high margins even when the market falls you end up with cheap products at expensive prices and that is where Apple is now.

And that's where companies start going down hill.

I've had an iPhone 5s for two years. The battery life is getting worse (not sure if it's from it being two years old or the iOS updates over the years). It's also slower than when I got it (definitely software). I don't need a new phone, but if I were to get one, it would be the iPhone SE for a little better battery life and speed. I'm too cheap, though.

This had better not be true. Granted my SE can probably last me for two years easily. (I got Apple Care + on it because. I figured Apple might not even upgrade it this coming year and I didn't want to have to buy the same phone again if something happened to it.)

They had better do either a 1 year or 2 year cycle on the smaller sized phones. Small phones are just plain better! (Or at least come out with a keyboard that can easily be used one handed on a bigger phone.

Personally, I'd jump on an upgraded SE in a heartbeat. Just give me an option for 128 GB of storage. Throw in the new Touch ID for and I'll be very happy! Adding OIS would be the icing on the cake.

iPhone 7 innards would be a nice touch; I just have no desire for a larger phone.

then i just hope that they release a flagship iPhone in a 4 inch size during this September.

Exactly. I wasn't expecting a refresh. If the SE wasn't just a one-off concession to people who wanted a smaller handset, it will more likely get refreshed when everything else is in the Fall. The sales numbers are there for the SE -- it's proven it has a market. Maybe next September we will be seeing three models of new "iPhone".

I'm using a 5" Android handset that was given to me now, but I feel it's a bit too big (and holy s*** is Android storage management a complete mess I've realized). I'm waiting to see what comes out of the next iPhone release. I want dat iPhone 7 camera.

However, I will note that what is happening with the Mac side of things is giving me second thoughts. I have a Macbook now, but if Apple's going to stop putting out any computers at all I might be interested in in the future then I'm wondering if I should just end my relationship with the platform. I have all my contacts and calendar wrapped up in iCloud and having them in a more Android-friendly syncing solution would be better right now.

Funny how the halo-effect can cut both ways.

I'm pretty sure they'll keep that size around. I'd thought they'd refresh the SE, but if not then I'd guess next year's iPhone will be 3 sizes of whatever the 2017 model is and the iPhone 7 as the budget model.

Hey Ming, find out about the new Mac Pro. We already know iPhones will be out next year...and the year after....and the year after that and the year that....and the year after that.....and the year after that...

Heh, that's the thing with Apple products, they just "keep going and going" without getting upgrades. In turn, their profit margins "keep going and going" higher and higher.

I would guess it'll be refreshed in September as basically a miniaturized iPhone 7 rather than be based on the upcoming iPhone 8. So an underclocked A10 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 3D Touch screen, 12 MP camera with OIS, 2nd gen Touch ID, water resistant, and no headphone jack. The only major concessions will probably be sticking with the iPhone 6s' 5 MP front camera and keeping the 16 GB and 64 GB flash capacities.
