I bought myself and my wife the iPhone 5 at Sprint. When we inquired about the insurance from Sprint and Apple Care, our sales rep responded saying that the Sprint insurance does not cover the iPhone so the insurance on the account would automatically come off.

He further stated we would need to go to apple to get the Apple Care. All of this was in a very helpful and polite manner. Not sure why someone would even attempt the "I cant sell you a phone without insurance" line, seems like the majority of consumers are smart enough to know better and take their business elsewhere.
Exactly, worst thing we can do with the customer is simply offer applecare. Its the customers choice if they want to purchase it then and there or buy it at an apple store. But that choice has no bearing on us selling them the phone.

Good point, when you walk into an Apple store you dont feel pressure, walk into a Sprint,Verizon or Radio Shack there is a feeling of sketchiness.

That's because at the apple store they don't get paid on commission. They have a salary and will get paid that regardless of how much apple stuff they sell. However, people at Verizon, ATT, and Sprint get paid a lot more if they sell a crap load of extras with the phones.

I'll spare the sarcasm in this response only as you seem to be having a difficult time with the facts.

One CANNOT purchase Apple Care + through VZW or AT&T. One can purchase it from Apple after the fact (within 30 days and either in an Apple store or over the phone on some circumstances). The OP's rant was about Sprint pushing him to buy AC+ from them. My response was about the option to buy AC+ through AT&T or VZW.

If you're ignorant of the facts or have difficulty with reading comprehension, perhaps your time would be better spent elsewhere.

Well your still very wrong you can purchase AppleCare thru the att or Verizon store I have done it many times but continue to think your right if you'd like , someday you'll figure out I'm right

I had a very similar issue when I was buying my iPad 2 from Radio Shack.

This is not linkbaiting, but here is my blog post on it:
http://beyondthetech.com/2011/06/my-interesting-adventure-in-buying-an-ipad-2/

Basically, after being coerced into getting accessories and warranty with my iPad 2, I emailed Steve Jobs with my story. I ended up getting a call from the VP at Apple, John Brandon, which unleashed a flurry of calls by both Apple and Radio Shack executives.

In the end, a refund of all my add-on purchases, a free leather Smart Cover, and free AppleCare warranty, and most especially, a very continued-to-be happy Apple customer.

Welp, I say I'm right and you're wrong, and here's why: every VZW (and AT&T) rep person I've ever spoken with, be it on the phone, in person, or chat, has told me that they do NOT sell Apple Care+, so the way I see it, the burden of proof lies on you; show me on their websites where they sell AC+; show me where I can add it onto my order via http://www.att.com or http://www.verizonwireless.com; Show me a chat transcript with a sales rep.

It looks to me like you're just the type of person who shoots off first and asks questions later.

Everyone is talking about applecare not applecare+

Define "everyone," because, to my knowledge, AC is included and complimentary, so if the OP & all others after are discussing being pushed to "purchase" or "add on" AC, then it MUST be AC+, no?

Well I don't really know about the Apple Stores where you are from but you get 1 year of warranty with 30 days of being able to call Apple Care if you want an extra year and 2 years of being able to call in you buy AppleCare. If you want to be able to pay 50 bucks to get a new phone after an accident you get AppleCare+. When I said everyone I meant the people on this thread.

That's not a scam..that's a manager trying to meet a quota. Report him to corporate and they'll probably give him a "sticking to his guns" certificate. All the carriers have stores that sometimes do it. AT&T did when I bought my iPhone 4.

This is a scam. These are not corporate stores but 3rd party retailers. They worry about themselves first. If they are trying to sell you accessories or Apple Care and can't buy the phone without it, then it's illegal.

Happens to many stores even with AT&T and Verizon etc...
They know that the i5 is very hard to find and they pray on unsuspecting customers. They push them around saying you have to buy applecare or a case or extra accessories and charger in order to get it.
Its completelly illegal to demand anything like that and you should report them to their superiors and even a local news channel would be nice to give consumers some power and exposure out there.

What law do you think they are breaking?

Yes, I'm familiar with the intricacies of AppleCare vs. AppleCare+.

The point I made previously was that the premise of the entire discussion is regarding the OP being forced or coerced into "buying AppleCare."

Because standard AppleCare is complimentary, AKA, "free." (1 year/30 days/no accidental coverage), it's illogical that everyone is alluding to being scammed into buying a free product.

Instead, because the OP is discussing being forcefully persuaded to purchase/add-on AppleCare, it MUST be AppleCare+ (2 years warranty/2 years phone support/2 accident claims), which is $99, AKA, "not free."

Make sense?

I mean I could be wrong but this being an Mac forum I think that people on here would know the difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+.

Thank you so very much for that astoundingy astute reply. You've really added to the forums and enlightened us all with your mere presence.

How am I wrong, again?

You certainly can purchase Apple Care Plus at ATT. You were mistaken.

What law do you think they are breaking?

They're forcing consumers to purchase items they dont want in order to get the iphone.
You find that legal, ethical or right?
What if you go to a gas station to get gas and they tell you that you need to get wiper blades or windshield fluid or they wont sell you any.
They're also breaking their agreement with Apple and its bad business practice.

Not according to everyone I've spoken to at AT&T & everything I've read.

I have to say, while I don't know if you are right or wrong, you are clearly providing evidence and asking for proof to dispute your claim. Can't ask for much more than that and you were even side tracked on the silly Apple Care versus Apple Care+ and still found your way back. Hats off too you sir.

Now I go back into lurk mode. :)
