is it really that much easier, DURING a call, to fish out a stlyish as well as your iphone and complete the swipe to answer? With gloves on? I doubt it.

Can you do that in 19 seconds? I doubt it.

I see your point, but then again I also think it's tricky to hold a stylus with a good warm glove anyway!

I can see uses for this, maybe not for me as I don't draw, maybe for jotting down quick notes? I'm not sure. Either way for the $40 it's going to cost me I'll pass.

Looks like something useful for a drawing app. I don't know how you would do multi-touch with it? Buy two and use them as chopsticks :p

I have a better idea, why don't cut the screen to half, place a keyboard instead, put a mini trackball, and name it, iHatePracticalPhone. This way we won't need stylus ! yeah! :p

P.S, dump leopard and use Windows Mobile, we could have a really nice Task Manager!

:D

Why the vitriol?

So I personally wouldn't use the stylus (I think I'd lose it within the first week) and don't think that I need one. But why have so many people come out so vociferously against it? Just because you don't need it doesn't mean someone else doesn't.

Easy answer: double-tap in most cases.

Or do the pinch. Having a stylus does not remove your fingers ;-)

How often do you zoom on anything other than Safari?

Two words. Double tap. I hardly ever use the pinch thing. Just double tap.

The double tap would work for zooming in sure...but zooming out?

sim·pli·fy
tr.v. sim·pli·fied, sim·pli·fy·ing, sim·pli·fies
To make simple or simpler, as:
a. To reduce in complexity or extent.
b. To reduce to fundamental parts.
c. To make easier to understand.

Okay, isn't that what the iphone was supposed to do?
So why then, would you add something to make it more complex to use?

Don't get it...nobody wants something that is more complex to use?

...Ultimatum, wouldn't own a stylus for anything unless the screen didn't accept what I have in front of me. My hands.

Plus, most cases on the market right now don't have a place for a stylus...and it's way too much hassle to dig for it when in need of it. :D

...and if you're going to do the 'pinch' (utilizing your fingers) than having the stylus was a waste of your time and money and that alone proves it.

Do you own one? Double-tap again to zoom out.

That's a valid point. Just need the right case, though.

Oh pooh. Don't be so black & white about everything. The real world is shades of grey :)

No one owns just one kind of writing stick. People own paintbrushes of all sizes, pens, pencils, markers, highlighters... you name it. Sometimes a finger alone works. Sometimes not.

I'm typing to you on a touchscreen laptop. Guess what? I use the physical keyboard and the mouse most of the time, because they're much quicker... and far less tiring to use.

As for the pinch, it's cool but wasteful. Other devices use gestures that make more sense on a portable device that might be used one-handed... such as a rotating gesture to zoom in and out.

Even Apple knew that the pinch wasn't always easiest, and that's why they threw in the extra double-tap gesture. Sometimes it makes sense not to be too simple all the time.

Do you own one? Double-tap again to zoom out.
So...what if you wanted to crop in tight? (zoom in twice)...you're screwed unless you use what was intended for the device (Your fingers)

Right...but you can't write on paper with your fingers.
Unless...you're finger painting. Even then this helps validate my reasoning, because you wouldn't use a paintbrush to fingerpaint.

This, I don't get either...why have a touch screen laptop, to only have to lug around the other items?

Please don't feel like I'm singling you out...
I just don't understand the need for an extra utensil. (the stylus...just seems overkill to me)

Terrible product, just received mine

I bought two of these after reading this article, one for me and one for an office neighbor.

They are terrible. The flexible tip must be fully placed on the iphone (you can't just use the tip), then you must apply a LOT of pressure to get it to activate.

It is nearly impossible to manipulate items, like dragging or swiping.

If you plan on using this for typing then you will loose about 80% of your speed, no joke.

My neighbor that I bought this for was an old PocketPC fan and thought the stylus would be the only way he could move to the iphone. After 10 minutes with this stylus he chucked it across the room and said his finger was better then this, and even better then the stylus on his old PocketPC.

Save your money.

For those who think there should be no stylus for the iphone; What the f&*! do you care if someone makes a stylus for the iphone? Are you the iphone police?! You don't need one, AWESOME! Some people do, for some tasks. You guys who put down the stylus are the same people who probably agreed with Steve that we didn't need apps on the iphone. If it wasn't for a few people that thought we should have apps for the iphone, there would be no Apps Store. I have a clue for you, get a brain!

Now, I have tried to find a stylus and I have tried the one that started this thread. Don't waste your money. It works very poorly. I had to apply great pressure to make it work and then it was unreliable. This is the second I have tried. The first was a cheap one with a rubber tip. It also took great pressure to get a response. It may be that a stylus for the iphone is a Holy Grail for some of us. I am very discouraged by what I have tried. I hope someone figures out how to make one soon. I am still carrying around my Pocket PC for drawing, because I need to make drawings on the fly. I hate this machine and I hate carrying two devices of this type.

To assume ignorance or a forced opinion on subjects in other aspects of a device from several people's one opinion of a certain item is rather ill-informed.

I personally, can't think of anyone that has complained to me about there being apps offered on the new 3g iphones. How you come to the conclusion that people who are against using a stylus would be against apps...is beyond me. It is, however, possible that some people that aren't using a stylus now...stopped by to see what the buzz was all about. This particular one, isn't getting such a hot review due to yours and several other people that have tried it out.

All I have to say, is this...
If you are truly a user and connoisseur of using a stylus, and want other people to agree...then dazzle them with your knowledge of it, not drag their opinions through the mud because you don't think their worth dirt.

I may have gotten a little overemotional. I really hate when people insult me for my choices, just because it doesn't match with theirs.

I could quote you many of the posts in which the posting persons have insulted the intelligence of those who were genuinely interested in the stylus.
Here are two:

"Isn't this like having a remote control for a car cd player, or having a chip clip for a self sealing bag....useless. "

" Nice design. They will sell a lot probably. They will sell a lot for one reason. People are morons.
The iPhone does not need a stylus. Yet, people will buy one and use it (for a time) anyway."

My comment about the apps was a joke, not to be taken seriously. Someone, previously, had posted that Steve felt that we didn't need a stylus. Initially, Apple had not provided for native apps, only web apps. Thus implying that they were not needed, also.

I have used the stylus in question on this thread and I am returning it. It is, in my opinion useless for the purpose I bought it, which was to draw. I had to bear down extremely hard in it to get it to draw with several of my drawing based apps. It also did not maintain a continuous line as I drew.

I am beginning to think there is no way to achieve this. I haven't tried the Pogo. I will probably try that one next.

Thanks for the review. Saves me buying one!
I hope you can get your money back.
