Searched around for an all in one surprise thread for iP4 as well as iOS4 but could not find one that could contribute to the community as a whole.

Rules: Post something that you never knew iPhone could do. Something that may benefit others. Please refrain from bashing, and be kind to all thread.

This is the "Giving Tree" if you will of iPhone and it's software :)

I'll start:
Today, while getting in my car and situated - I put my phone in the cradle (nothing fancy, just a universal vent mount horizontal). Anyway, while I was getting ready to back up, I inadvertently activated Voice control on the phone, and it came through my Bluetooth in my car!!! Before, it just came through the phone which was pointless, and when the call was initiated it then went through the stereo.

So now, finally, i can just hold the home button- keep my eye on the road- and just say call .... and bam, woman says multiple numbers, I speak mobile... Calling mobile!!! I believe this is working right through my car speaker as if I am speaking into the phone itself- no need to talk in the phones direction or scream it.

Spectacular!!! Anyone with Bluetooth in the car has to give this a go. I do not know if it is a iOS4 thing or a iP4 thing, but it is just splendid in every way. :D

Never used voice control- now I will every time I am on the road. Love it.

I was using FaceTime to visit a friend in another state. He was curious about my new apt. He suggested switching to the rear facing camera during the video tour. I was was pleasantly surprised with that option. Then after the tour I switched back to the front facing camera. Nice.

I found that out yesterday too, in my 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sportswagen which has on-board bluetooth.

I was actually wanting to use voice command and was expecting the prompt to go through the handset instead of the car's speaker and mike. I just wish voice command was better at picking the entry you're speaking--even with assigned nick names, I get a higher than optimal error rate.

When you're calling in to one of those menu driven call centers, the dialer will space out the numbers when you make choices from the menu. Not sure if it's doing something fancy, or if it's time based, but it's pretty cool either way. Just one of the many small details that makes me love :apple:

I just did the same thing with my cousin who lives in Maui.

I have an Audi and yeah this rocks, I was very surprised. A lot better than saying DIAL 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 , etc

Can you elaborate a little more for me here? Thanks!!!

Sure...

When you call into one of those phone systems that has you select different menu options, your selections will be spaced out so that you can see exactly which options you picked.

For example - A couple of days ago I called my bank to talk to someone about my account. I had to pick a few menu choices (lets say 1, 3, 4), then enter my account number. For other phones (and I swear older versions of iOS), the display would read something like:

555-123-4567134<account#>

The iPhone screen shows something like:

555-123-4567 1 3 4 <account#>

Somehow (I'm guessing it's time based) it knows that the numbers I'm entering are discreet entries, and spaces them out accordingly.

gotcha!!!!!

I will try that tonight. Thx

This happened a few seconds ago. I was selecting some text quickly and went past the word I wanted and selected an extra space. When I let go, the selection bar scrolled back one character to not include the extra space.

Same in our Honda Pilot, now when accessing Voice control, the responses are through the vehicle speakers instead of the iPhone, nice touch.

This is probably kind of naive of me, but, although I"d heard of faces and places, I didn't pay too much attention - I thought it was some sort of tagging thing that you had to do manually or something - I just hadn't really focused on that feature and didn't know anything about it, and so just assumed. Imagine my surprise when I click "places" today for the first time and see little dots on the map showing where my pics were taken :D I realize most of you know this, but I honestly didn't realize that that's what it did, and I had another one of those "oh wow, that's so cool" moments that Apple seems to specialize in :)

I can watch unfiltered videos on DailyMotion. I knew about the app just like MetaCafe, but they filter the search just like the YouTube app which I hate. I can go directly to the DailyMotion main site off Safari and click on the video. The QuickTime logo pops up when it streams. I'm coming from a 2G iPhone, and didn't know that. I thought YouTube and the occasional porn sites were the only show in town on this device. Now if I want to see some famous actress do a nude scene, I can always go there. And for the non-famous women, there is always FaceTime. Hehe..

God, I love this phone. I'll admit, it has a few software glitches right now. I once was on Settings and when a person called me, after the call, it only showed the background. There was also a headphones glitch at this one XXX site where it became muted which was an easy fix by plugging it out and back in. :p But I'm sure the early software bugs of a newer "point zero" software update will get ironed out eventually like in previous years...

I didn’t know how loud it was going to raise the volume on the speaker. For those of us a little hard of hearing, it’s a god send.

Also, from all the negatives about multi-tasking some had posted, I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it worked.

I had no idea that was in there now, pretty cool. I saw when I synced my photos, I got all the faces over as well.

+1 to the seperation of number entries while on a phone call that requires keypad entries to go to a menu.

If you are locked and you awake it from sleep and then double click the home button, it shows the album artwork for what is going to play. Previously (I think) this would only show controls and you'd have to "play" first to see it. This isn't anything huge but a nice touch.

Also, facetime can be used really practically -- a friend of mine needed to get to my place last night so I showed him what the area was like so he knew what to look for to get here.

voice control is great; i've just started playing with it.
i have to say, as a former iPod touch user, the new iPod app in iOS 4 is fantastic. they have worked out all the bugs/annoyances found in previous versions. smart playlists are fixed. multiple "On-the-go" (now simply called Add Playlist...) are back. playlist folders carry over from iTunes. you can edit any playlist on your iPhone! the iPod app is so polished now. :)

I can't recreate that. When I double click while awake, I get the multitask, when asleep I get just the controls???

^^^^ I can do that on my 3GS. You need to be in the lock screen.

I'd like to see something like that too. The only new one I know of is "What time is it".

I guess the mods thought that my exclamation of "FINALLY!!" in response to the above post wasn't helpful. However, I wanted to repost my "FINALLY!!" comment because, although it doesn't contribute a new finding to the thread, it helps to underline/highlight a feature that should have been there from the beginning. A feature that I have been waiting and asking for ever since VC was introduced.

Hopefully Apple doesn't continue to ignore VC and actually develops it further.
