Has anyone tried a network test to see if it's just the Edge icon but with the 3G speed?

Don't upgrade to 2.0.1

Regarding Harpy007 question about network test:

Its not the icons. If you compare the speed connecting to a graphics intensive web page with Edge vs. 3G there is definitely a major difference -- which I assume is the whole point.

However, I'm still not convinced this 3G network was worth standing in line for. AT&T reception is the same -- which is bad -- hardly any at home and its not dependable at work. Comes down to GPS I guess and I suppose that's progress?

And those Apps? Toys. Downloaded the Etch-a-Sketch for I think $4.99. Didn't work at all. Dumped it.

I've had this problem with both 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 constantly, since July 12. I'm in Manhattan as well.

Cynical in S.F.

I tried calling AT&T and Apple about the 3G network. Spent at least two hours on the phone. No real solution. They didn't seem to be aware of a problem or so it seemed. I can only assume they know about this but are outright lying. AT&T tech rep at least tried to contact Apple to get a replacement -- but couldn't get through -- can you imagine? As it turns out it's just a lousy network. Nothing wrong with my phone at all. Still on 2.0.0 though. Waiting for 2.0.2.

So don't bother with calling anyone. Just go to the Apple Store and complain. See what happens. They will probably say this is the first they've heard of it and then show you that you can indeed hook up to 3G -- as long as you are in the store. Stay in the store and 3G will be fine.

Did a couple of tests on Sat. Friend has original iPhone and I have latest. Same updates -- 2.0.0. Placed phones next to each other at 23rd and Castro. Friend's phone had 4 bars. I had none. Across the street I had no service at all. Last night had no service at home (Buena Vista West) so I turned off wifi and 3G. Phone went to three bars immediately. Lesson: If you want to use the iPhone as a phone you have to turn off network settings. So what are we paying for?

I also did a bunch of tests at work. Turns out I have the same results as you: it really is Edge (half the speed of 3G when I turn it back on). I read today that Apple is working on a software update to fix reception problems affecting 2% of the iPhone owners. I sure hope 2.0.2 or 2.1 will fix this

Now that 2.0.2 is out, I will test it out again today at work. I'll post my speed results later "fingers crossed"
