Apple can afford to fail with a few products. The Vision Pro tech was important regardless because it prepped them for future smartglasses tech and spatial computing. The iPhone Air was important because it prepared them to make a really thin device again so they could make the Fold/Ultra. Their experience making the Ultra will prep them for future products, too.

Apple's big failure during this period was to fall so far behind on AI and Siri, which they are now correcting.

Spot-on. I think a lot of it is about slagging on Apple (and especially Cook when he was CEO) everyday of the year. Apparently it feels good and is empowering.

The iphone fold is not a x moment, next years iphone pro lineup will steal the show with a complete design overhaul borderless display and no physical buttons, much like the iphone x got rid of the home button.

The iphone fold is a niche product given its high price & lack of features. If it flops time will only tell.

That's the price of 2 flagship phones.
... or the price of an iPhone + an iPad. Coincidence ? I think not.

It's a hard pass for me and it's not negotiable.

Announced in September but not available for ordering until some time all the way into OCTOBER? It's an outrage! Not to mention that I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it anyway! I'm not sure which is the bigger outrage!!!

Apple message boards were flooded with people saying how stupid Samsung was with their Z-fold devices for YEARS. Every year it was the same comments over and over. Then Apple realizes how popular they were becoming so they have seemingly come up with their own "we have one too product" and all of a sudden this place is foaming at the mouth looking to get their hands on it. It's such weird behaviour.
 
I’m dubious of this report on the backs of another report saying Apple has upped its production from 5 million to 10 million of these phones.

I’ll be getting one of these. I already carry two phones, an iPhone and a Samsung Fold 7. It’s a pain to carry two phones, so getting an iPhone Ultra to replace both appeals to me, especially since I dislike the Fold 7’s aspect ratio and it doesn’t support iMessage. I hate using a Fold when it’s folded, so I use mine almost universally unfolded. Having an iPad mini/iPhone in one solves a lot of my problems. The Fold costs about $2000 and Samsung is likely to raise prices like everyone else, so the iPhone Ultra will likely be competitive in pricing.

Very possible. It might be available only in a few countries at launch and other countries getting it around 3 to 4 weeks later.

It will 'sell out' and there'll be a 6 week lead on ordering it. Apple hype tends to do that. I will obviously skip it because I don't see a fold being anything other than a niche product and somebody on here already had the idea I had. There'll be a fold-gate 'cause somebody folded something and broke the screen and will say Apple should've thought of the stupid things people will sandwich between their screens or some stupid thing like that. News organizations will pick up on it and hype the fold gate it 'cause it's Apple.

I'm just depressed thinking about it, soooooo I'll be over there playing with my iPhone 14 and not caring. 😀

That said, it's true, but regardless of the price, it's a day one buy for me. I think they will sell more than people here think - a lot more. People who have Samsung's fold, know very well how great the experience is. And Apple will make a better version with the built-in-addiction-based ecosystem that makes shareholders very wealthy.

These millionaires built their wealth by not splurging on unwanted expensive gadgets or expensive urges. They calculate every penny they spend and make millions. They keep away their emotions and focus on the value of their investments.They didn’t buid wealth by fluke or through urge for latest gadgets.

Old man here but I recall shelling out 2500 for the first Mac about 8k in today’s money.

I’m glad pricing has dropped considerably for not only Apple but all consumer electronics.

I’m not surprised to see the ultra going for 2500. Nor am I going to rage about it. If you can afford it, great. But no one is entitled to it if you can’t swing it.

I don't know if the Ultra or the 18 Pro will be the choice of the too much disposable income crowd. Seems at least possible they'll prefer the Pro.

I'm guessing they will just copy Samsung's pricing:
$2,000 for 256GB
$2,200 for 512GB
$2,500 for 1TB

Great device - but not for me. I'm sure it will still sell well, as there enough people that can justify the extra cost if they think they can be more productive with this device.

I just checked with my niece who happened to own al Samsung Z fold since 4th iteration. He owned all latest mobiles from Apple and Samsung. When I checked with him, he was showing all the broken screens of Fold 4, 5, 6 and 7 which could not be repaired (he paid for extended warranty and screen replacement programs) since the screens are getting broken, and you can replace only once that too you still end paying some amount even if you have extended warranty or screen replacement covers. Now, he has to spend nearly $600 to fix the screen and lying unused.

He now owns feature phones with buttons, completely fed up with the Foldable ones.

I agree, Ive been with Apple forever and a day and always had to pro phones but I do think I may now get a cheapo and a decent separate camera and change my habits. Less phone time is no bad thing.
