iPhone Update 1.0.1 Released

I believe the same thing happened with the AppleTV update - every mod had to be re-done after the update.

I wouldnt beat up apple too much over AppleTV's reverting after the 1.1 update. Most people turned on the SSH daemon and left on the default password...and it copies over the files which contain the index of plugins just because thats how the update works. It copies over crap onto the unit.
The iphone update was good..even if it was just a couple minor fixes. At least tethering finally works..

I can confirm the double tap with one finger to zoom in, double tap with 2 to zoom out in Maps has been a feature since day 1.
Noise in nearby speaker will never go away
That is not iPhone specific - it is caused by the GSM system that powers the AT&T network (also happens with IS-136, TDMA) when it checks to see what phones are in range (the system has to know which tower to send the call to if someone calls you). So NO update to your GSM iPhone will ever stop that dit-dit-dit. The CDMA system (used by Verizon) apparently does not do this (or does it differently) because of short bursts ocassionally it sends a constant lower signal (so interference should be less but constant, thus harder to note).
Most of the time you just need to move the speaker (or mic) a bit further from the cell phone. The quality mics at my work will not do this unless the phone is within 2 feet, but the $20 baby monitor at my house will do it if the phone is within 20 feet. Of course, that monitor will also pick up interference from trucker's CB radios half a block away. Shielded speakers sometimes work, the audio pros over at Slashdot say "Use pro-level gear that has balanced connections on XLR or TRS jacks. Balanced cables have three conductors carrying ground, the signal, and a copy of the signal 180 degrees out of phase. Any interference affects both signal lines identically, so when they are put back in phase at the other end, any interference will be phase cancelled as it will now be 180 degrees out of phase."

I guess it's possible that they would have some hardware to handle it as both a mic and a speaker. I'm definitely not a hardware expert. But, if they turn the mic into a speaker, how would you make a phone call? This mic is used as part of the phone feature. I believe the user's manual also explicitly illustrates the mic and the speaker on the bottom of the phone. I have not checked, but does the updated user's manual indicate that they are both speakers now?
The update fixed my business IMAP account. Previously, the only folder that would show up was the INBOX. Now I get all of them. Interestingly, my personal .mac IMAP account showed all of it's folders before the update.
Yeah I noticed this too. My work IMAP (kerio mail server) and my personal IMAP (courier) accounts show all the folders. It still only shows the new message count from the inbox, but Mail.app on mac does that too unless you get a plugin for it. Still this makes the mail application on the iPhone actually worth using now.

These are fairly unedited and my comments are in the Update or Verified section. Spelling errors were left in, Mr. Perfectionist.

Main fixes verified by multiple iPhone users with this release:
1) 4 Apple security changes.
2) Option to CC changed to BCC instead.
3) IMAP Subfolders appearing.
4) Calculator input changed on start of new calculator, resets input to "new" entry.
5) Many users reporting built in speaker, not external headset, volume seems to be louder in visual voice mail and iPod features.
This is even with users not using the EQ settings.
6) "My AT&T account" bookmark added to end of main bookmark page. Not really a "fix", more like "spam".
7) Server delete option now sticking, was being lost before when exiting screen.
8) 25 more messages to load message is gone. This is a change or a fix depending on how you view this issue.
9) Many users reporting less crashing, not no crashing, but less crashing.

Many User Reports: having to restore if iPhone is hacked in any way (i.e. iFuntastic, Jailbreak, carrier hacks, etc). Be sure to writedown/backup/sync all settings before if you hacked.
User reported: Auto-Lock time changed - now says Immediately, 1, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes. Underneath the choices is a cautionary statement reading, "Shorter times are more secure."

Update: Can some users see extra settings than other users?
User reported: Email also handles Exchange IMAP better. I used to only get folders that were children of the Inbox, while Exchange folders like Sent and Drafts or Public Folders only showed up on my computer. This has apparently been fixed.

I tested it by emailing a photo through the Photos app and also by sending a URL through Safari's Share button and the sent messages are both now properly showing in my IMAP sent folder.
User reported: The PPTP VPN now works with encryption enabled (it didn't before). The bug where it prompts for the VPN password with a numeric keyboard is still there though. But at least the PPTP VPN now works!

User reported: Previously, I would often have to re-enter the details for hidden networks, such as the one at my home. The update seems to have resolved this.
User reported: Google Maps: Before, if you used your fingers to stretch and expand a map, if you touched the URL or bottom bar, the map would shoot off to a new center. Very disconcerting. It doesn't do that now.
User reported: Calculator: The calculator used to do an annoying thing when you launched it and started punching numbers. Sometimes it would start concatenating to the end of whatever number was already on the screen from previous usage. Now, when launched, if you start tapping numbers, they replace what was already there. Nice.
User reported: Ear volume: My Iphone had "reasonable" volume in the ear speaker. It seems to be significantly louder. i tend to drop it down to 4 or 5 in normal room environment instead of 8 or so. Very nice.
User reported: Ipod Speaker volume: I can now play songs louder without as much distortion through speaker on bottom of phone. nice.
User reported: Ipod playing while surfing: Before, it you started the iPod playing and started surfing in Safari, within minutes especially if browsing a heavy javascript page, the music would crash and quit playing. I've been surfing and podding for 20 minutes with no crash. Very, very nice.

Verified: Weather icon has always been 73 and sunny, even before 1.0.1. This is probably always going to be this way since iPhone has to network out to get the latest weather report and why slow down the main menu for that, duh!
User reported: Safari and iPod usage at the same time crashes at about the same consistantsy as previous version.

Update: This is not possible, the other "hole" is a microphone. Test by covering your finger over the left bottom of iPhone while playing music/video, sound will be significantly muffled.

Verified: This is verified on my updated iPhone as fixed also. I had been able to recreate this issue prior to 1.0.1, but now the setting sticks. I had submitted this against pre-1.0.1 to apples's bug reporter website. Good work Apple!

the benefit from having the ability of two speakers is that while in iPod mode both speakers could play for a louder and clearer sound quality but when you are in phone mode one could be used as a mic. Again im not sure if tey did it or not but i have seen it done before so ill be sure to check when i get around to updating it.
Yes, I noticed this as well. I thought it was an odd mistake that the marketting people would never correctly label which one was a seaker and which was a mic when they got all the other technical details so precise. Today we realize they are both speakers like in some drawings.
Edit: I seem to be at least partly confused. Though the speaker is much louder if not now two speakers... it still doesn't have good quality. Earbuds are best way to go for music. But the speaker definitely rivals my MacBook Pro in volume with equalizer turned all the way up in volume.
iPhone update broke my iphone!
I just installed 1.0.1 on my iPhone and in the middle of the update, it crashed. I used iFuntastic, so I figured that was why. But after it did a full factory reset, the earpiece in the iPhone didn't work! I can only hear the other person if I put it on speakerphone!
I called Applecare and after I told them the problem, they immediately asked if I used any custom ringtone software. I told them yes, and they said that was why it crashed. They weren't sure why the earpiece broke, though. They had me do another factory reset and told me if that didn't work to call in the morning for a repair (since it was almost 1AM when I called!)
Long story short, I would be cautious when using any custom ringtone software. I doubt the 1 ringtone I put on is worth my iPhone breaking, and I will probably get a refurbished iPhone! I am just going to wait until Apple comes out with a ringtone tab in iTunes which I have a feeling will be pretty soon.

I don't think your phone is broken at all. This happened to me, too. All I had to do was plug a headset into it, and remove it... a couple of times. I think that the phone thinks that there is a headset plugged in, so it is feeding audio to the jack instead of the ear piece. What this does is allow the phone to realize that there isn't anything plugged in, and then it should work fine.
EDIT: I added custom ring tones, too. So I don't think that's the real issue here. I think it may just be one confused little phone.
Ugh they didn't even update the passcode lock bug. When you have the lock on, you're supposed to only be able to make emergency calls but if you tap the "emergency call" button it allows you to call any number! This makes the phone lock feature pointless!
I agree with you that there would be a huge bennefit to having 2 speakers at the bottom. This espeicially true since the phone will more than likely be using powerful ipod capabilities to play ringtones etc which would require better speakers. However, this is not how apple designed it. Even the updated manual states that there is only 1 speaker and 1 mic. Obviously this was their intention. The 1 speaker they put in the phone is absolute crap in my humble but accurate opinion. I also have a samsung blackjack which is capable of playing mp3's as a ringtone without the speaker rattling at all. I wish they did have 2 speakers and maybe a smaller mic somewhere in the middle.

Yeah, i'm having problems with that also. I set mine to lock after 1 hour of non usage but it seems to lock every hour instead of an hour after the last usage.
This is strange to me that the same update would turn some users mic into a speaker and not others. The updated users manual still states that there is only 1 speaker and 1 mic. Yes, it's possible that the sound in 1 speaker might be louder but that doesn't mean that the mic is now a speaker.
I've also heard someone mention that "some drawings" have 2 speakers. I would like to see this drawing of 2 speakers to see where the actual mic for making phones calls is.
Also, this update was not to make enhancements and turning a mic into a speaker would definitely be an enhancement. If this were update 1.1 instead of 1.01 and it some how rearranged the hardware in the phone I might believe that the mic has been turned into a speaker. To test this please completely cover up the speaker on the left and see if you hear anything on the right. I did this and guess what,,, only 1 speaker.

This gives credence to Apple's reason for having iPhones activate through iTunes. Other than my BlackBerry, I have never updated a cell phone's operating system. It's great that Apple has made it so easy. And really...who cares if you have to sign up for an iTunes account to do it, it's not like they force you to buy music once you sign up. And let's be honest here, how many early iPhone users don't already have an iTunes account?

One easy "test" that everybody can run is to play music/video via your "speakers" then just use your finger to cover the bottom left edge of the iPhone where the one and only speaker is, the sound will muffle. If there were another speaker on the right side, it should still sound the music, it doesn't.
I think it "sounds" like there's two speakers because it appears Apple has upped the volume capacity of the one speaker it does have.

If there were another speaker on the right side, it should still sound the music, it doesn't.
I think it "sounds" like there's two speakers because it appears Apple has upped the volume capacity of the one speaker it does have.
I have iPhone model MA712, software 1.0.1 (1C25), modem firmware 03.14.08_G and only have one speaker.
