Should be given priority. Figured this was going to be a mess though. Oh well, I can wait. Can't wait to hear about the horror stories with trading the actual phone in on launch day.
I agree. That also seems like it would expand the pool of people who might want sign up for the program. As it stands now, a large segment of the population who does not live near an Apple Store is not going to be very interested.

I ended up ordering with AT&T Next and will just sell the 6s and pay off the remaining balance to Citizens One. I want out of this program. It sounded so easy last year when it debuted but now it's a nightmare and I definitely don't want to do it again next year. None of the stores in any surrounding counties had the phone I was interested in. The nearest store to me wasn't even taking reservations.

My 6+ still works flawlessly. Skipping this "upgrade" and getting the real upgrade in June.

Interesting, I'm considering signing up for the iPhone Upgrade program to replace my 6, after things calm down.
I wonder if Apple agrees that these are their "most loyal customers".
Apple has the metrics regarding who is eligible to upgrade, and could have created a "by invitation" campaign.
Could it be that Apple doesn't really want these customers to upgrade?

Has anyome on the iphone upgrade program been able to reserve a jet black model? Seems like it was unavailable for just about all upgrade program members from the start.

I was able to reserve a matte black 7 256. But jet black was not available from the start (12:06am, the first time I was able to see the store from the IOS app)

I did get a jet black 128gb upgrade, the 256 wasn't available. And again, we don't really know when it started, some of my machines got in much earlier than others, and I was in before most forum members were reporting they were in. And I know there had to be others in before me. There was probably a queue.

I wasn't upgrading from the IUP, I paid off a Next phone and newly signed up for the IUP, and for what it's worth, when I was going through the process I did look at availability for pickup of jet black at the five Apple stores in my area and all were listed as unavailable. This was at like 3:03a EDT just after the store went up. Glad I was able to pre-order online for direct shipment, but I might not be able to next year if Apple doesn't make some needed modifications to their program. Wish I'd known about this before I signed up...

What're the chances Apple responds in a positive way to this and makes changes for next year to make it a much better preorder experience for people in IUP?

Someone said "most loyal". No, just no. Anyone who buys an iPhone is allowed one as much as the next person. First come, first serve. Get over it.

Yeah, seriously man, something really wrong with some people! I have no idea what makes someone who buy few more products then the other feel the need to be treated as special!!!

Same delay issue with the T-Mobile Jump upgrade program. I ordered my jet black 7+ 128GB at 8:30 this morning and just received the expected delivery date - Nov. 1-30. I just walked back to the store and changed it to the regular black and now the date is 9/27-30.

They make less than demand because the demand is absolutely off the charts.

The charts?
You are basing this off of what? The iPhone forum on Macrumors? We have no way to determine yet what the demand is yet. They always have minimal amount for first shipment every year. To manufacture fake hype and make it sought after.

I am really disappointed with how the roll out went last night. I set my alarm and woke up at 3 am EST to order the phone. Then the store remained down for over 10 minutes before I gave up and decided it was more important to be rested for a morning meeting than to be first in line. I ended up waking up at 4:15 am and trying again, but by then all the upgrades for the phone I wanted were gone.

I do not want to complain, but I feel this case warrants a bit of complaint. I played by Apple's rules; I paid my monthly upgrade program payments, I woke up at the assigned time, and I was willing to give them my money. What kind of crazy world is this where that level of effort is not enough to let me buy a phone?

The worst of it is, that I still don't know how/when I will be able to buy the phone. I want the phone soon, but I don't have time to follow an unreliable sales channel. Please get your act together Apple.

is this a surprise - every single launch of their phone is a debacle. And they spin it to make it seem like demand is so high, which likely it is. But seriously, after 9 years or so - can't they plan to just maybe have a surplus and make more than the expect demand.

I'm in the Program, and last night I just figured that demand worldwide was ridiculously high, which was why everything but Rose Gold in the Plus model was sold out the minute I was able to get in. I never thought that it was my local stores that were sold out.

Honestly, if I knew that the ordering process was restricted to store-only inventory, I never would have signed up for this program. I would have continued what I was doing before. I joined this to make launch day ordering simple and fast.

That's odd. I was able to order 2 iPhones in the desired black 128GB and used the upgrade program like last year without a problem. A few minutes later did see the Jet Black saying wouldn't be available for launch day but other wise from 3-4am saw plenty of launch day availability at least for Verizon and the Apple upgrade program. So while yes we have to go in person to pick it up thats only because we have to have our current trade ins valued and that amount put towards the new purchase.

Sarcasm? If so, very difficult to determine over the Net.

If not, you're right. Every customer is equal.

For a phone that 'everyone' says is going to flop, it sure sold out quickly.

Hook, line and sinker, another sycophant falls for Apple's blatant marketing trick, which they have been doing on almost every major release for years now.

Had the same issue at 3:01am. "We're not taking any more reservations to upgrade your iPhone right now. Reservations will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on September 17. Please come back then to make a reservation."

At 330am I gave up. Got to work around 8 and was able to finally access the store and only rose gold was available for the plus. Had to settle for the 7 in black. Really wanted to try the Jet Black. Oh well.. probably won't do this again.

Had the same issue as the article. Makes me wish I did the AT&T program since my friend was able to get a matte black iPhone late this morning just fine, but I couldn't get crap at 12:03.

Same thing every year Apple always under produces to make demand seem more than it is. They are masters of trying to hype product launches. Seem to always screw the enthusiasts who really want the phone. In a few months when all the rabid fanboys get the device you won't have to wait long for this phone.

Please, this is one of the dumbest conspiracy theories going. Up until recently, every year Apple sold more than the last...I would tell you to educate yourself on this but it's common sense...

They aren't generally asking to be treated as special. Folks in the IUP who wanted to be able to do an online pre-order like everyone else were instead forced to do reservation for pickup, and for a lot of people, the stores in their area aren't getting any of the models they wanted at all. They are clearly at a disadvantage to people who buy outright, or use carrier's upgrade programs like AT&T Next, which allows online pre-order from apple.com on upgrade.

Totally makes sense to me. Why would Apple want IUP customers reserving phones they could sell at full price. No one saw this issue coming last year when everyone extolled the virtues of the program.

That's terrible considering how expensive the program is. Apple screwed up. They should've sent out emails already saying you get it on the 16th. That alone would make it worthwhile to many.
Not sure what you mean about it being expensive - it's attractive because it's pretty cheap.

Two things.
1. All they had to do was not have any in-store reservations *except* IUP for a couple of days. In the time I went from picking a phone to completing the process (enter password, MFA PIN, etc.) at 3:15 or so EDT, every in-store 7+ phone in the USA except Texas and Alaska, and a couple of other states was completely gone.

2. The IUP T&C already states we can ship the previous phone back, as I stated elsewhere on MR yesterday. WTF isn't Apple doing that this time? I know they will some year.... See 2.f: http://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/iphoneupgrade_us/

I actually was so pissed I then bought a full price 7+ 256 Black and planned on selling my current 6s+ 128 SG, but changed my mind this AM and cancelled it; I know they will have more in stock in-store shortly to get under the IUP. But having IUP 'members' (lol) not able to get them as quickly as 'non-members' is totally not what Tim implied last year.
