it is much easier to go with carrier (ATT, Verizon, T-mobile or Sprint) than opening another credit application.

in many ways this is not a good program (one could even go with barclays card installment plan than this option)

The carriers do credit checks as well. Doesn't the Barclay installment plan require a minimum level of purchase?

You are on point - exactly! This is not a $45000+ auto that you lease every three years to stay current - it is a (expensive) performance phone. 24 months - lease or buy is same, as Apple Care covers the exact period.

Foolish to lease a $900 phone perpetually!

It is literally the same thing, leasing a deprecating asset. You are trading the phone in at a residual value (guaranteed in this case) for another lease. This is even better than an auto lease as it is at 0% APR.

If you are the careful type.....Applecare is becoming less and less valuable.

With the 6s it's $129 just to have and $99 an incident. If you are a person that just breaks screens.....the OOW screen cost is only $129 each time.

I was told 3 times it was a soft pull. I guess I will find out Monday when I get my credit report. But I was approved without a problem.

If it was a hard pull, I really hope they don't require a hard pull every year. That would be ridiculous.

I specifically asked and I was told it was it was a soft pull as well. I have excellent credit but I like to know when my credit was being pulled.

I find it easier. You already have the account, so no new account setup. No credit checks for me to go from old installment to AT&T Next.

I do not think there is a soft pull when you are applying for a new credit application; unless you have account with them ...

only when you open the account the first time - I believe, not every time you upgrade or buy iPhones installment plan.

I have been a T-Mobile customer for many years and they ran a credit check for the JOD program. Now granted this was the first time I had done the JOD program.

If I can't trust Apple with os x and iOS, then there is no way i trust apple in payment plan.

I upgrade the iPhone before with ATT on contract, they never checked credit other than the first time.

UNless rules have changed for buying iPhone in installment plan/leasing plans

''Edgar Spayce said:
Urk, american people... In Europe (or the rest of the civilised world) we don't even have credit card because we spend what we own instead of greasing banks with debts.''

Hey genius, I'm Canadian. We have credit cards too, and when you're not irresponsible with them they can be extremely useful. ''We spend what we own'' Yeah, like credit doesn't exist in Europe. How exactly do you pay for a house you think? Magic dust?

No issues here, just annoyed I couldn't use Apple Pay, was hoping to bank 10% off with Discover.

Every company has their own rules.
sure, to me though opening another account with financing company in addition to carrier account not really a great idea.

I would be happy if the financing is from Apple themselves (not from another company). again apple does not want to deal with the installment plan ;)

Why are folks who have $4000 of available credit on a credit card dealing with this Apple Upgrade Program hassle? Why not buy the iPhone and put it on that already-established credit card, and go home happy with a new iPhone 6s or 6s Plus?

For me I buy the new iPhone every year, so this just seemed easier to trade in my phone every year for a new one instead of having to sell it myself. For others it's free money, their credit card is going to charge them interest if they don't pay it off, while also affecting their credit score and monthly spending limit. If you choose not to trade it in, you own the phone in two years. I think it's a great deal.

I can see where you are coming from. I don't feel my intent was to come off that way, I apologize. For me, I have trouble understanding why someone would finance something while possessing the cash.

As someone who has let himself get into the position of paying too much for money in the past I agree. Being free of debt is powerful.

We're good, and thanks for the spirited debate.

Does anyone know why Apple is using Citizens Bank for this? Is it hard for non-banks to set up leasing arrangements? Setting up the Upgrade Program worked smoothly for me this morning, but it felt creepy to be reading terms and conditions from a bank I'd not heard of half way through the process.

I had no issues at all. Apple has handled thousands of these transactions so far today. They are bound to run into a few issues that might not be related to them, at all. Perhaps Citizens One has an issue on their end.

Yeah, it can never be Apple's fault - right?

I'm sure if this was a carrier everybody would be rushing to burn them at the state. But we mother Apple can't do anything wrong....

These sort of comments are totally useless, worthless.

Who are you referring to that is "buying it wrong"?

And why is that wrong?

And what would you suggest?

It was related to the comment Steve made during the antenna problems that 'you're holding it wrong.'

it was actually a pretty good joke. But it clearly went way over your head.
