iPhone X iPhone Upgrade Program Question

Hey all,

I want to enroll in the iPhone upgrade program but i currently do not have a wireless phone number with any of the 4 major carriers. I have a prepaid phone plan with AT&T. Will it be possible for me to enroll in the program, or will i be forced to enroll with "AT&T Next"? According to the apple website, it says i must enroll in AT&T Next..

I understand that there aren't many differences between the two plans, but having the phone unlocked rather than locked would be much better and hence why i am more interested in the iPhone upgrade program!

I had AT&T and I had no trouble getting into the iPhone Upgrade Program. My device was paid off though, could that be an issue?
