I don't live in the UK so I don't have skin in the game, but how can you say Boris is doing "better than Labour" if Labour hasn't been in power for like 10 years?

Probably just an assumption. The alternative would have been an extreme left bunch led by Jeremy Corbyn with fantasy policies like planting 270,000 trees every single day for 20 years and wanting to tax people by the size of their gardens. The fact that the only viable alternative, Boris Johnson, won by a record breaking landslide shows how little faith the country had in him and his merry band of sycophants, like Owen Jones.

US population 320m, UK population 66m, AUS population 24m, NZ population 5m. You cannot compare island nations with low populations to places that have quadruple the amount of people. The UK is much easier to access by all of it's neighboring countries than Australia is to any of its neighbors. You can compare cases per capita as that's an accurate measurement.

An island nation by definition, the UK is no easier to access than say Aus/NZ if you ensure all borders to incoming flights (and in the UK’s case, ferries also) are closed. it’s much easier to lock the country down than its neighbours in continental Europe. You seem to be suggesting the Antipodes are some kind of remote isolated backwaters, which whilst geographically true to an extent, disregards the fact they ordinarily have massive amounts of airline traffic with SE Asia, which they quickly and as a result, successfully curtailed to limit the spread of infection.

Of course, it’s largely a moot point at this point of the second wave with infections spiking again following a relaxed summer of foreign holidays and most counterintuitively, the schools and universities all restarting. It’s not rocket science, containing the R rate. Just requires coordinated and decisive leadership and action. Unfortunately Boris Johnson is evidently incapable of even tucking his shirt into his 40” waistline.

But hey, let’s not get distracted from the important stuff. Folks getting iPhone minis and Pro Max upgrades safely 🙄

Not sure population density actually has much to do with spread...in the US, for example, the biggest rise in cases is in the Dakotas, which are about as rural as they come. Cities tend to get infections first, but don't necessarily have the greatest spread. For something like Covid, infections are linked to indoor spaces with poor ventilation...so subway platforms would probably be bad, but not city streets or large buildings. (One source from a quick Google search)

Obviously NZ and Aus are particular cases, but I think it has a lot to do with strict border controls and quick action by public officials.
Places with low population densities often also tend to have larger structures - bigger houses with bigger rooms, bigger gardens, generally more space, allowing people to be more distant when visiting other people. I'm not saying this definitely does affect things, or it it does how much, my point is we don't know. You can't simply say "if country a had done what country b had done it would have the same results" as we just don't know that.

Yes, but it also helps greatly that New Zealand isn’t run by spoiled thieving overgrown man-children. The Tory crooks running the UK literally acted like COVID-19 was going to say “god save the queen” and salute as it passed by the UK. Idiots.
No argument there.

*sigh* People are frightened of lockdowns, and pushing against mask requirements, but then the virus does what viruses do: Infect people.

If the UK, and America had dealt with the pandemic as adults, they could be like New Zealand and Australia. Both have been able to control the pandemic, and reduce the deaths among their citizenry. It's a crying shame that the elections are so close in this country. Let's reelect the person that has allowed far too many Americans to die. Insanity. And now armed groups are demanding that the counting of votes be stopped. Armed groups demanding that one of the tenants of American Democracy be trashed, drowned in the swamp...
This 100%. There are so many people (I have friends and family in both) who don’t realize how badly the US and UK are handling this. They think the state of affairs is the best that can be expected, and they are wrong.

There are so, so many countries with single or low-double digit death tolls despite having millions of people.

Personally, I think the political leadership matters far less than the populace. Sure, things may be slightly better with labor (UK) or the Dems (US) running the show, but at the end of the day you’d still have people flagrantly and selfishly flouting mask and safe distancing measures in both countries, and a government either too afraid or too hamstrung to take those people to task. Selfishness and ignorance are the real plague here.

Yes, but...

The sheriff (one of those 'super sheriffs that can decide which laws they feel they should uphold) announced that he and his deputies would not respond to calls of stores and others that are not wearing masks. They would only respond if there was any violence, and so far, they show up 45 minutes later, after the guilty party is gone. He apparently won reelection, and there is no way to recall or fire him. His deputies, yes, but their union will kick and scream and shower local politicians with cash, and they will, usually, be reinstated.

So, yeah, Joe Biden has a hell of a long road to get anything to stick where such malignant jerks feel THEY are in charge of what laws are worth upholding.

Yep, and that’s exactly my point. This is ultimately a problem with the citizenry of the US and UK; law enforcement/politicians/etc are only effective if people themselves are willing to buy into common sense, science, and service of a greater goal. Sadly, it seems many many are not.

Couldn’t agree more. Shameful really. Theres a reason why Sweden took the route it did, as it’s reliant on the common sense and community ethos of the majority of its population.

There is already a striking mutation of the COVID-19 virus. Researchers are calling it 'COVID-2.0'. It has been found in, of all places, mink farms in Denmark (and potentially other countries).

The government of Denmark has ordered the destruction of every mink in the country, over 17 million, in an attempt to contain the newly discovered virus. It was spreading in one mink farm, and had spread to 12 people working at the 1,100 farms. The number one fear with this new virus is that it is different enough that none of the current antibody based treatments are working, and that people that have survived the COVID-19 virus have no immunity at all from this new virus.

So, people that are denying this current COVID-19 pandemic as a hoax and refusing to take precautions could be exposing and spreading a new mutation of the virus.

The longer the virus remains uncontained, uncontrolled, the greater the risk of mutations and the creation of a more virulent, and deadly, strain can emerge.

Wear a mask, avoid large groups of people, wash your hands, take control of your infection risk! This is NOT a joke. It's NOT a hoax. This is DEAD SERIOUS!!! To deny the pandemic is to condemn society to struggle with it longer, and end up costing many more lives.
