Exact same thing with mine. Got one at Walmart for $18.88. They sell some good factory Apple stuff, BTW. Had to buy because I am 2000 miles from home, no Apple store near me, and I just noticed it when I was on the plane here.

Considering that my Apple headphones(the noise isolation ones) had a problem with the protective boot coming apart from the base it covers and they replaced it without even asking me one question about it, I feel confident going into the Apple Store and getting a replacement.

I've owned a total of 7 OEM Apple sync cables, 1 from an old iPod nano I had back in the day, 3 new ones for each iPhone I've owned, an extra one I bought for the house, and two extras I bought for my car.

ALL of them have had this issue at one point or another. It is very frustrating that the only consistency in this Apple product seems to be this common defect that they have obviously failed to address time and time again. I find that it is a design flaw where the wires inside the thin rubber sleeve twist so much that it contorts the thin sleeve along with it until it tears off. A good fix for this is that when you FIRST get your new sync cable get something rigid, such as a paperclip, to splint the sync cable and wrap it around the area in question with electrical tape in such a way that the paperclip is not exposed. It is a good idea to wrap the area that commonly tears with electrical tape first before splinting with the paperclip and wrapping this to the sync cable.

And for the record, do this at your own risk. I'm not responsible for you messing up and shorting out your iPhone or electrocuting yourself ;)

Mine is completely frayed on both sides, and has been that way for awhile. My iPhone went out of warranty a few months ago, anyone think it's still possible to get a replacement cable? Mine is in pretty terrible condition, just from normal use (and it's taped on both sides).

I've bougth several cables to replace the very expensive $20.00 ones from Apple, and I am pleased to say the ones I've bought for under $6 have lasted longer. This second one is now about a YEAR old, with no signs of this common issue!

My brother also got one, no issues yet. I get the from http://www.modchipstore.com

look at the apple headphone jack end, spin it and read, same material as usb cables. anyway this is probably safer for the environment, because if it can break that easily than most likely its biodegradable.

I haven't seen this come up yet on mine, nor on any of my other cables (I still have an old one from my 2nd mini as well as cables for my Photo and Classic and a couple of generations of nanos). Was it an issue with this specific cable with the shorter--for lack of a better term--thingie that surrounds the connector on the phone end?

How could someone possibly manage to electrocute themselves from a usb (5v, battery 3.7v) device?!

This happens quite frequently apparently. I just went to DealExtreme and ordered like 10 of their USB cables. They have them over there for $2-$3 a piece.

Third party cord

Sorry if this thread is dead.

I'm wondering if it's safe to use a third party USB cord? does it have an effect on the iPhone, maybe mess up with the battery life?
