Here's my 2 cents, so take it for what it's worth. I think:

The 3.0 software for the CURRENT iPhones will be released sometime next week to coincide with WWDC. My guess is Monday or Friday. I believe this release is plausible for a number of reasons: The new software coming out on the current generation iPhones still could help compete with the Palm Pre tremendously without Apple having to force new hardware prematurely out the door, if Apple took Beta 5, which was FOR THE MOST PART fairly glitch free, and have been working on it all this time, it should be close to ready to launch. Remember...the current version of 3.0 has no need to beta test Video Recording, or other new hardware features, because they won't be needed until the new hardware launches, which I think will still be in July. I personally don't think apple will even release a beta for that version of 3.0 because no one has the hardware capable of testing video recording, auto-focus, etc...

Also, with the recent release of iTunes 8.2, and various carriers flipping MMS on, these just seem to point to an imminent release of the 3.0 software for the current generations of iPhones available. The iTunes release particularly, because Apple always releases the new version of iTunes that the as-of-yet unreleased software will need, usually just a few days before the software comes out. The original iPhone, and the 3G iPhone launch dates come to mind. If Apple released the 3.0 software first including MMS, Copy & Paste, and the other new software features this month, and then next month released the new iPhone with increased storage, Video Capabilities, etc...it would be TWO smash hits to the Palm Pre. I think this seems like a much better way to showcase the features, as opposed to having them come out the same day and just having the new iPhone hardware overshadow everything.

Once again, these are just SPECULATIONS based on some well based rumors and logic. Thanks for reading through my wall of text if you made it that far.

It's unlikely that Apple would launch a new phone without consulting with AT&T to allow them to expand the storefronts and unit sales.

I think it's going to be late June / Early July before the new iPhone goes on sale.

Exactly. I'm fairly certain that regardless of when 3.0 comes out, new iPhone hardware will not be released until late June, early July, with as much press and hype as possible backing it.

I think it's possible Apple is scrambling to release 3.0 on Monday after the keynote with a new iPhone later in the month or July.

The new iPhone will have some features that 1st and 2nd gen iPhone doesn't have but at least, in Apple's eye, 3.0 will answer any bullet points that the pre has against them to try and prevent people from jumping ship.

X2

Very well said.. Everything you said could be possible... All I want is 3.0 and I will be happy for another year then I will look into maybe another iphone... Just think when you get this update it's like getting a whole new phone...

For the original iphone user's it would make sense for them to roll out this update because with the pre coming out, if the original user's update there phone's that will be able to hold them over until the new phone is out, instead of them jumping ship over to sprint....

It makes total sense for them to send out 3.0 to try to over shadow the pre and then deliver the knock out punch by releasing the new iphone.. Let's just wait and see what Monday has in store for us...

T-Mobile Germany

Someone in Appleinsider forum has been claiming that T-Mobile Germany support line 'repeatedly' confirmed 15th of June Launch(also apparently holiday restriction is put on that date...

but anyways I can see this happening.

1.Training: 3.0 has been out already, feature wise they probably there is not much need to train. Also activation procedure is same, so the skills that really matter(ie. activation) do not require retraining

2.This is a second launch. All the infrastructure including the suppliers are everything is all sorted out already so there is no reason not to. They would not take as much as they did as last year

3.Demand may be signifcant but certainly not as much as last yr. Especially with steep discount during last few weeks helped by 'app' centric ad, it is likely many people would not be considering upgrade. There seems to be many people here who think upgrading customer from previous iPhone is important to Apple. I don't think they are, if they can't upgrade this time around they can do it next year.

However one thing that stops me is that one of the Australian Carrier, Optus is stating that the iPhone promotion will end on June 30th. But of course this could very well be a decoy...
