Magic Numbers

The Magic number for me to bite are 16 GB of storage and $20 a month unlimited data and texting. Some day.

I dunno about that...

Folks,

Check this out... I confirmed it with two stores.

You can only purchase an iPhone IF you are eligible for an upgrade OR you purchase a new line.

So if you currently have a Cingular/at&t plan and you are not eligible for an upgrade you cannot purchase an iPhone... Unless you add a line for an extra 9.99 a month. Which also means you will need a separate data plan for the iPhone as well.

If you dont believe this call your local store... they have this info.

I just called two local corporate stores and customer service and they all said that since I have a plan with an unlimited data plan (34.99 pda plan) already, I won't need to. I had both of them pull my account up and look at it.

I was told that the main concern was having a line with a data plan attached to it.

HAHAH, I'm guessing we'll just have to wait and see!!!

ATT Activation

Does anyone know if you have to physically go to an ATT store for activation?
From what I've read from the rumor mill you have to go to the store and have the ATT service guys activate it for you. It would be nice to go to the Apple Store and purchase the phone and then call ATT for activation.

39.99 450 anytime minutes
15.99 Unlimited data (if we're lucky)
5.99 100 txts
4.99 Enhanced vmail
----------------------------------
66.96 subtotal
9.00 taxes/fees
----------------------------------
75.96
My Guess:

39.99 450 anytime minutes
34.99 Unlimited data
5.99 100 txts
4.99 Enhanced vmail
----------------------------------
85.96 subtotal
13.00 taxes/fees
----------------------------------
98.96

For two years $500 phone plus 2375.04 service plan. Very expensive.

That's the hardline version and probably more like what we can expect.

And that's also for 450 minutes. 450 minutes and 100 texts is haaaard to do!

Actually I have no idea. If at&t is going to require a data plan then I wouldnt think that an unlimited plan would make a difference... as a you cannot share data plans like you can voice plans. So, if you bought an iPhone I would think you wouldnt be able to use your unlimited plan with it since its tied to another phone... But who knows what they will make you do.

I'm guessing one of two scenarios...

#1, Apple discounts plans for the 2-year contract on postpaid plans (instead of the equipment), which is brilliant:

500 minutes + free nights and weekends at 7-9pm (variable possibility, I'm undecided)=), $39.99/$40
1000 minutes + free nights and weekends at 7-9pm, $69.99/$70
1500 minutes + free nights and weekends at 7-9pm, $99.99/$100

Unlimited EDGE, $15-20 (can be added or removed at any time in one-month increments or prorated if removed/added mid-month, just like any other optional feature)

300 text messages, $5
Unlimited text messages, $10

#2, they want a contract for NOTHING (no equipment discount, no service discount), regular AT&T-style plans and a $20-25/month data plan. Stupid.

Has anyone actually thought that maybe, just maybe, it hasn't been announced yet because it's an AMAZING price? Perhaps in a bid to pull even more people to the iPhone the rates will be really competitive.

Unlikely sure, but possible.

iTunes:

1. insert sim into phone,
2. connect phone to USB,
3. redirect to ATT/Apple activation site
4. select plan
5. pray that you're credit worthy

tied to SIM

My plan is tied to my SIM so when I use my Razr it sees I have unlimited data so I can use the phone's [nighmare of a] browser without being charged.

I also have a WM5 smartphone flip that I use instead of my PDA with data, and all of them register data as data used out of an unlimited plan.

I am required to have to PDA data plan because I have and use a Windows Mobile PDA, and the reps said that the same data plan will work with the iPhone. If the iPhone data plan is cheaper, I'm still keeping my PDA plan because I like not having to worry what phone I want to use, but they said I will be able to port it over just by interting my ATT SIM card.

Things made by Apple are amazing, but never because of their price. Brace yourselves for a shock...

After all, who said that the iphone will be a phone for everybody?

Oh I know, I've been using Macs since day one, but who can deny that times are as unpredictable as ever?

Is a family plan just going to cost $30/mo. per extra phone line? I think think thats what I currently pay on my Sprint plan.... Anyone with AT&T wanna let me in on this?

Also, they just share voice, and not data, correct? So I'd need a separate data plan for each phone...

I currently have a family plan. There's the basic number of minutes that you can see pricing for on the ATT site, plus 9.99 for each extra line (that's per month), and each feature (enhanced vmail, texting, data plans) is charged per line--not able to be shared.

That's not too bad...

I don't think it really matters what Apple and At&t say about it. This thing truly markets itself. All you need is to know a little about current available technology, and to watch a demo of the phones known capabilities (let alone still unknown / still to come over months of software updates)...

...and its immediately worth every dollar they are asking. Its just a matter of how much its worth to you.

Neither Apple, At&t, you, or me can decide what the iPhone is worth. The market will decide as soon as its released. Ill admit the iPhone looks pretty good but for the upfront cost they are charging they will need to give you a break somewhere. The average person doesn't spend more than $100 on a phone and I think most opt for the free phone the carrier offers. 2 Years is a long time and as awesome as an iPod is, it only costs $300. The iPhones true cost will be $980 if the data plan is $20. I don't know how many people can stomach or afford to pay $80 + tax a month for a cell phone. Sure there will be people who have the money to burn but they are definitely the minority.

Plus everything we know about the iPhone right now is mostly all hype. In most situations like this the actual product can't live up to the hype that precedes it and we've had 6 months to raise this phone onto a high pedestal. If it doesn't preform perfectly its going to be in for a hard fall. The PS3 had a lot of hype but ultimately its price killed its possibilities of becoming the console leader.

I hope the iPhone is successful but personally I'm not going to pay $500 for a smart phone that is not capable of broadband speeds (EVDO). Maybe when revision 2 comes out I'll consider it.

Is this the reason for no 3G? Just a thought...

Here's a thought. Do you think that maybe the reason the iphone is not 3g is because ATT was worried it would not have the bandwidth capacity to handle it? Assuming how many of these they project they are going to sell and the simple fact that you use the internet to run most of your apps, well...that would be a lot of bandwidth used. Just a thought.

Also, (this one is petty)since most apps (widgets) run off the internet, what happens if you are out of coverage and lose your signal? Does your phone become useless or at least your favorite widgets do.

Yay!

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but I honestly would rather not read through 3 pages, and I didn't see anything like this in the several comments I read. Did no one notice the

"There will reportedly be separate Voice and Data plans and a 2-year service commitment will be required."

All of the people who didn't want a data plan should be celebrating!(or did I read that wrong)

I have been wondering about the decision myself. Does 3G drive up prices, drive down battery life, have limited coverage, ...?

On a side note, the US Trade Commission has recently banned imports of new cell phones made with chips from Qualcomm (part of a patent suit with Broadcom). This will effect new models (current models were grandfathered in) that use EVDO and WCDMA effecting both Verizon and Sprint Nextel.

This might keep future iPhone competitors using 3G networks out of the US for a while.
